What does Paleo Lifestyle mean? Is it a Paleo diet plan? In general, eating Paleo means eating veggies, fruits, meats, fish, certain fats, nuts, and seeds. And it means removing grains (breads, pastas, rice, etc.), beans, soy, dairy, certain vegetable oils, and refined sugar from your diet. The Paleo Lifestyle rather than Paleo diet, mimics the types of foods every single person on the planet ate prior to the Agricultural Revolution. It encourages dieters to replace dairy and grain products with fresh fruits and vegetables – foods that are more nutritious than whole grains or dairy products. The Paleo Diet is based upon extensive scientific research examining the types and quantities of foods our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate.

Foundation

The foundation of The Paleo Diet is meat, seafood, and unlimited consumption of fresh fruits and veggies. If you’re really trying to lose weight and you’re not active at all, limit your fruit intake to one or two pieces a day, as carbs add up quickly and limit nuts and seeds to about 1 or 2 ounces per day, the calories can add up! What is ok to eat?

Veggies

All veggies are acceptable, including sweet potatoes. Fruit guidelines are the same as veggie guidelines. Organic fruit and veggies are best. Local and organic is even better. The less transit time there is between the farm and you, the more nutrients the produce retains.

Meat

Eat meats and eggs freely, but in order to mimic our ancestors best, eat these products from animals that were grass fed/pasture raised. All species are fine – just be conscious of mercury levels and ecological practices. Know that smaller fish like anchovies generally have less bio-accumulation of heavy metals and toxins, and high levels of omega 3 fatty acids.

Nuts

All nuts are good, as well as the butters that are made from them. Also on this list are coconut flour and almond flour. Peanuts are not nuts! – they’re legumes.

What else?

Some miscellaneous items would be, kombu, wakame, other seaweeds, algae’s, fats such as-tallow (rendered beef fat), lard (rendered pork fat), coconut oil/milk/manna, extra virgin olive oil, walnut oil, avocado oil, macadamia oil, hazelnut oil. beverages ok are-Filtered or spring water-Herbal tea, Coconut water, Freshly juiced fruits and vegetables.

What should be avoided?

Foods to avoid would be grains, dairy, beans/legumes, high omega-6 vegetable oils, refined sweeteners and artificial sweeteners, factory farmed meat, eggs, and seafood, also, refined iodized salt. Quinoa and some other seeds are still up for discussion by many.

Tara from Team TaraRara in Phillips wrote us to show the progress she is making on the Losin’ It! Challenge! We asked her to share her secrets and this is what she said, ”I'm swimming one hour laps 3 times a week. I've cut done to 1200 calories a day. I've been sticking to a lot of fresh veggies, staying away from any processed foods, eating more chicken and turkey instead of beef, and staying away from starchy carbs. I've only been drinking a lot of water and I have my coffee or hot tea every morning. It's pretty simple to manage. I have a calorie counting app on my phone so I can keep track!” We are SUPER impressed with your AMAZING results! Way to go Tara!

It was late September 2009 when Jay Edenborg, director of Public Affairs at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire, decided to start living a healthier lifestyle.

What was his inspiration? He says, “My wife and my daughter, Grace.” Jay says he had always been on the heavier side, but it was not until the last few years that his weight had become an issue. At 275 pounds, keeping up with his toddler was getting more difficult. He decided to enroll in the HMR® program through Weight Management Services. His goal was to lose 60 pounds during phase one of the program. By late February 2010, Jay had met that goal. He has dropped an additional 20 pounds since then and is currently at a healthy 195 pounds.

When Jay reflected on his life before the HMR process, he says that what has changed the most is the way his family thinks about meals. “Our eating habits are setting Grace up to eat healthy. We are

forced to plan meals as a family, and we aren’t in our own little food worlds anymore.” Jay says his healthier diet has not been that hard to stick to.

While the old Jay called fries his “frenamies,” the new Jay says, “You can have those things — just in moderation, and you need to factor in how long you will need to exercise to burn those calories. Most of the time, I don’t eat those things, because the extra 40 minutes on the elliptical machine just aren’t worth it.”

Jay says that the group aspect and the accountability factor with the HMR program were the keys to his success. Now that he has shed the weight, keeping up with Grace does not seem to be an issue anymore. He explains, “I have an energy level that I didn’t have before, and you know, really, the most important thing is just that I know I’m going to be around a lot longer, and I won’t miss out on the time I have with her and my wife. It’s the best gift I could give them and myself.”
