Officer Ignacio Murillo from Devonshire Patrol and Officer Kate Luna from Operations-Valley Bureau have been promoted to Senior Lead Officer. Officer Murillo, who has been doing an outstanding job handling A67’s Area, after Kathy Bennett retired, will now assume the Senior Lead Officer position for that Basic Car Area. Officer Luna was the Valley Bureau’s Vice Coordinator and will be our new Senior Lead Officer for A81’s Area. Here at Devonshire Area we are actively taking steps to combat crime. The area East of Balboa Blvd. to the 405 Fwy., south of the 5 Fwy. and north of Roscoe Blvd. has forever been a problem area for property crimes. One of the new steps we are taking to combat crime is the creation of a Neighborhood Watch Coordinator position. This is a pilot program that will focus on increasing Neighborhood Watch participation in this area. If this pilot program is successful, we will expand it to the whole Division. The officer chosen to implement this new pilot program is Officer Ken Crawford. Ken has a very extensive background in the Community Relations Field and comes to us from Operations Valley Bureau. Some of you might already know Ken because he is one of our Department’s Chaplin’s. Please help me welcome the above-named new officers to our Devonshire community. When you see police activity in your area, have you ever wondered what was going on? Of course you have, and a great way to find out about current police activity is the NIXLE system. This system sends police alerts and updates to your computer email or a text to your cell phone. It easily allows you to customize the system and restrict the information that you receive. Some of the types of alerts that are sent out through the system are crime alerts, street closures, police activity in the area, and evacuation notifications just to name a few. This is a great tool and I urge all of you to go to the NIXLE website and sign up. Please join us for the yearly Shepherd of The Hills Church 4th of July Fireworks Show held at their church on Rinaldi Street and Corbin Ave. This is a great family event and we expect a lot of spectators, so be sure to arrive early. The fireworks show will start shortly after 8:45 PM. Another great event in July is our very own Police Activity League Supporters (PALS) Invitational Golf Tournament on Monday, July 11th at the Porter Valley Country Club. This is a fundraising event and a great cause that benefits all of Devonshire’s youth programs. The golf tournament is a great event. Formore information, please contact Sally Barnes, Golf Chair at(818) 349-1706 or e-mail: [email protected].

Crime Tips: Unattended open garage doors are anattraction to potential thieves. Please remember to closeyour garage doors if you are not in the immediate area. It onlytakes seconds for a thief to walk in and walk off with yourproperty. Mark your valuables with your driver’slicense number, so law enforcement can attempt to locate avictim if we have a number that can be referenced.

Commendable Officer and Citizen Incident: I would like tothank the Volunteer Surveillance Team (VST) and Officer MarkBlizzard for their continuous efforts and hard work combatingcrime throughout the Devonshire Division.

Commendable Officer and Citizen Incident: Thank you toSupporters Of Law Enforcement In Devonshire (SOLID) for thegreat job they did at the “Devonshire Annual PancakeBreakfast”! Hundreds of community members attended thefundraiser breakfast, held at Devonshire Station, on Saturday,May 21, which was also “Armed Forces Day.” Numerousveterans attended the breakfast as well as Jay Johnstone, former baseball player with the Los Angeles Dodgers (2-timeWorld Series Champions).

Crime Trends and Locations - From May thru July, crimetrends have been low in Basic Car 17A67; however we beganexperiencing an increase of street robberies in Devonshire Area. These street robberies are random acts and for the most part, bodily force was used to commit these crimes. Be alert toyour surroundings!

Crime Tip: “SUV third-row seats!!” Because of their highdemand and expense, as well as the lack of a traceable serialnumber, “third-row seats” have become a hot commodity for carthieves. Due to the recent increase in theft of third-row seats, ithas been recommended to use a bicycle lock or a pad lock tosecure “the seat” to the vehicle - doing so might prevent youfrom losing it.

Commendable Officer Incidents: With the ongoing gangand narcotics activity in the area around Parthenia Street andVanalden Avenue, our “NEW” Gang Enforcement Detail (GED),which is still in the process of assembling, has stepped up theirpatrol within the vicinity and made several arrests. We havenoticed less gang members and narcotic suspects loitering.Good Job GED!!

Neighborhood Events: Our next Basic Car Meeting willbe Wednesday, July 27, 2011, at 7:00PM at CalahanElementary School, 18722 Knapp Street, Northridge. Our guest speaker will be Detective David Keating fromDevonshire Detective Division, Robbery Unit.

What is National Night Out?

It's America's Night Out Against Crime!

The "28th Annual National Night Out" (NNO), aunique crime/drug prevention event has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 2, 2011.We cordially invite you to be a part of our NIGHT OUT 2011 team.Mason Park, 10500 Mason Ave, Chatsworth, at 6:00 PM.

In all, over 37 million people participated inNational Night Out 2010.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to: Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime

programs; Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community

partnerships, and send a message to criminals letting themknow that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Crime Trends and Locations - We are experiencingCommercial Burglaries @ Business Center Dr. west of TampaAve., and Residential Burglaries between Tampa Ave and CorbinAve, north of Roscoe Blvd., south of Parthenia St.

Neighborhood Watch Events: Basic Car meetingThursday, July 16, 2011 at 7:00PM at Gianelli Square, located on the north/east corner of Londelius St, andShirley Ave.

Crime Prevention Information: With the weather gettingwarmer as we head into the summer months, it is temptingto leave windows open in order to keep our houses coolerduring the day. An unsecured window allows easy accessto your valuables and can threaten your family’s safety. It’s important to consider that even though a window mayappear to be inaccessible, and o.k. to be left open, thoselooking to enter your homes are ever creative in their abilitiesto reach the second floor windows, as well as crawl throughpet doors. A simple secondary locking devise obtained from alocal hardware store may be a l l that i t takes toinconvenience a “would be” burglar and cause him to looksomeplace else for his next victim.

Cell (818) 634-0579 - E-mail: [email protected]

Crime Trends and Locations - Basic Car 17A95 during April24 through May 21, 2011, had 13 Residential Burglaries. Therewas an increase of one from last reporting period. ReportingDistricts (RD) 1777 & 1778 each had three, 1778 & 1776 eachhad two, 1796 & 1779 each had one.

Burglary Theft from Motor Vehicle (BTFMV) showed adecrease from prior months and ended up with a total of 10.RD 1795 led the way with four, 1776 & 1777 each had two, 1797& 1798 each had one.

Commendable Officers and Citizen Incidents: Thismonth’s commendable citizens are all the members ofSupporters Of Law Enforcement In Devonshire (SOLID). SOLIDmembers give so much of themselves to better all Officers ofthe Devonshire Area.

Crime Tips: We have decreased in crime and can continue thetrend if we look out for each other. One of the best deterrentsis walking in your neighborhood. Get to know your neighborsand know your neighborhood. Report suspicious peoplethat don’t belong there or wandering yourneighborhood. Remember the majority of ResidentialBurglary arrests are due to neighbors seeing the crime inprogress and calling 911. Neighborhood Watch is now moreimportant than ever. Please get involved and attend the BasicCar Meeting.

Neighborhood Events: Our next Basic car meeting willbe on Thursday, July 14, 2011 at 7: 00PM at St. NicholasGreek Orthodox Church, 17037 Plummer Street inNorthridge. We will be honoring all Veterans.
