CHILDREN who can communicate clearly and confidently have a huge head start when it comes to learning, making friends and expressing themselves at school. According to the National LiteracyTrust nearly 50 per cent of a child’s learning occurs in the first four years of their life. Therefore the more stimulus babies and young children get in terms of being read and talked to, the greater their capacity for language and literacy. Develop good language and communication skills This is vital for pre-school children as it prepares them for when they start their first year of formal education.A confident communicator will be able to socialise and make friends easily in the classroom and in the playground. They will also be able to express their feelings to their peers and teachers. Children develop language and communication skills by being given the opportunity to talk and listen. They learn new words from stories that are being read to them. So turning reading into a habit is great, as then your child will expand their vocabulary extensively. As your child nears school age, begin tracing words with your finger as you read. Ask your child to identify the sound that words start with, or words on the page that rhyme. These activities help develop pre-literacy skills, which are vital in helping children learn to read and write. tees and staff, volunteers andthe public, who attended, baked cakes, made the tea,put out chairs and gazebos, and also stayed behind to tidyup. Sue and Steve from Haver-fordwest Town Council werealso a great help.

SUPPORTERS of theWithy-bush Hospital Chemother-apy Day Unit (CDU) havehelped a nurse gain morespecialist knowledge.Lung Cancer nursing spe-

for Kirsten’s course wereraised by Letterston RAOBand donated to the inde-pendent Withybush Hospi-tal CDU Appeal.Kirsten said: “Thanks to

funding from the independ-ent CDU charity, which cov-ered my travel and accom-modation costs, I was ableto join others in a skills de-velopment programme.

“The course focused onthe latest treatment pro-cedures and offered thechance to network with oth-ers who do similar work athospitals around the UK.“This proved invaluable

for me, and will help meas the lung cancer nursingspecialist within the on-cology team at WithybushCDU and Ward 10.”Bernie George, trustee of

the charity, added: “As a lo-cal charity set up to providethe support needed by theteam at our CDU, we feltthis was an ideal opportu-nity to use funds raised toenhance local skills in ameaningful way.”

Talk and listenLISTENING is also critical to children’s languagedevelopment and reading. The learning continues even into adulthood as wepick up new ideas or new knowledge often by listening. So it’s only right that as parents we develop ourchildren’s listening skills. For children to pay attention and listen, they haveto have the ability to focus the eyes and/or earson something specific for a certain length of time.Children need to listen to sounds around them, tospeech sounds, to words and to sentences before theycan learn to speak for themselves.A good attentionspan is needed before a child can begin to understandlanguage. Listening skills are also key to children’slearning when they start school. So, activities that canhelp children with their attention and listening willbuild up a child’s concentration level.
