OYSTER CARDS

For all London transportation you will need one of these, an oyster card. These cards will allow you to get on any bus or train. Unless they are out of money. At the nearest assistance desk ask how to get one. They will load your card with money and then you can go crazy on public transportation! WHOO! If you run out of money just go to the assistance desk or self service booth and load it up!

MAPS AND SCHEDULES

• Before you begin your journey to wherever you're going be sure you plan it out. Getting lost in London isn’t good because it’s such a big city. It’s very important that you look at a map of where the tube or bus is going. All tube stops have maps that say where every stop is.

• Most tube maps have a vertical line that has names of tube stops all along it. If the stop you want is above where you currently are on the map, you need a northbound train. If the stop you want is below where you currently are on the map you want a southbound train.

• HOWEVER some stops have horizontal lines, with stops all along them. Instead of northbound and southbound it will have eastbound and westbound. Obviously that means they either going to the west or the east. Also mobile map apps and fold-up paper maps are good.

• Buses are a little different. First of all buses do not have northbound, westbound, southbound and eastbound. Instead they have lines, lots of lines, and they’re even confusing lines. You want to know what stop wherever your going is. If you don’t then you’re helpless. Same goes for the tube. Every bus has a number, for example, bus C11 is going to Brent Cross Shopping Centre, and Primrose Hill Road is your stop and it’s on that bus’s route. That’s pretty much how maps and schedules work.

PRIORITY SEATS

• Priority seats are seats you can find on the bus and on the tube. Also at bus stops. Priority seats are reserved seats for people who are disabled or less able to stand. (Pregnancy, holding a young child, or age.) If you are sitting in one of these seats YOU MUST GIVE IT UP if someone who needs those seats gets on the train or bus. Priority seats are usually found near entrances to the bus or tube.

WHEELCHAIR AND STROLLER AREAS

• On the bus you will find a spot near the middle with no seats and a wheelchair symbol on the ground. This means it is a wheelchair and stroller area. You may stand there if there are no seats but, if a wheelchair-person gets on or someone brings a stroller in, you may have to move or otherwise be squished between the wall and the stroller or wheelchair. On the tube you will find some seats that fold up and down. You can sit on those but, once again if someone in a wheelchair or with a stroller gets on board you may have to move.

TUBE VS. BUS

BUS• Easy access, no stairs, unless you want to sit on

the top.

• More stops, may take longer.

• THE BUS IS CHEAPER ON YOUR OYSTER CARD!

TUBE• More stairs to get to. However there is a

lift/elevator.

• Less stops, however it takes longer to find a stop because they are not as common as bus stops.

• MORE EXSPENSIVE ON YOUR OYSTER CARD!

TUBE SAFETY TIP #1

• Now of course when you’re on the tube you need to be safe. Safety is an important thing in life. Now, don’t get mad at me and say I am acting like a parent or a teacher. It’s important. Now, let’s get started.

• Tube Safety Tip #1: Don’t try to touch a moving train, you will probably lose a body part or get seriously injured.

Page 10: LONDON TRANSPORTATION FOR DUMMIES IF YOU ARE A DUMMY, READ THIS TO FIND OUT ALL ABOUT LONDON TRANSPORTATION! BY: TATE REYNOLDS

TUBE SAFETY TIP #2

• Keep ALL body parts behind the yellow line. Otherwise you may fall onto the track and get crushed by a 30 to 40 mph train, and we don’t want that. One lady was looking over the track (her head was over the yellow line) and got hit by the train. She was knocked unconscious.

TUBE SAFETY TIP #3

• Report baggage or backpacks that are just laying on the ground or by the wall. There could be things like bombs in there. Also if it’s someone’s bag they left there it’s good to put it in the lost and found. THIS GOES FOR ALL LONDON TRANSPORTATION OR JUST ANY OLD PLACE.

TUBE SAFETY TIP #4

BUS SAFETY TIPS ONE AND TWO

SAFETY TIP #1• Once again plan your trip ahead of time so you

don’t get lost.

SAFETY TIP #2• BE CAREFUL ON THE STAIRS. (If it’s a double

decker bus) The bus could be moving when you try to go up or down the stairs. Take it slow or you get seriously injured. Also you can not stand on the top deck.

BUS SAFETY TIPS THREE AND FOUR

TIP #3• If there are no seats available then YOU MUST

HOLD ONTO A HAND RAIL! Otherwise you could fall into somebody and cause a chain of human dominos.

TIP #4• If there are seats available then sit in them. Even

if you don’t want to sit next to a stranger. It is safer to sit on a bus than stand.

• Taxis! If you’re really in a hurry to go somewhere call a cab! Whoo! (They may be overpriced but they take you where you want to go!)

LONDON TAXIS!

Page 19: LONDON TRANSPORTATION FOR DUMMIES IF YOU ARE A DUMMY, READ THIS TO FIND OUT ALL ABOUT LONDON TRANSPORTATION! BY: TATE REYNOLDS

BE CABWISE

• Always make sure your cab is from a minicab company. If it isn’t it could lead to some bad things. The people at the Transport for London say, be CABWISE! Even if they have the authorized minicab sticker, they could still be fake and dangerous. If you want a minicab they MUST BE BOOKED ON THE MINICAB APP!

BLACK CABS

• Black cabs can approached on the street. Also they can be flagged off the street. They don’t have to be booked. Unless you want to book one you can so via the taxi app. (I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT’S CALLED)
