www.lps.org.uk Dear Members, It’s been another busy month for LPS members and the committee as we lead up to the last one day seminar for the year, the university open day and had the AGM earlier this month. On 4th November we held our AGM followed by a terrific off topic talk from Dr Michael de Podesta of the National Physical Laboratory. The talk was titled “How does anyone know what the temperature really is?” and went down very well indeed. Great use of props and audience participation! The evening was very well attended and we achieved agreement on all matters, including the approval of the commit- tee for 2015. Thank you to all who turned out for the evening and showed support. On 26th November we had a one day University Open Day, this year being hosted at Royal Holloway. A great selec- tion of talks, attendance and support. We are looking at the best dates to hold this event in 2015 to best suit graduates and perspective employers. I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that our final one day seminar for 2015 will be held on 11th Dec 2014 which will be followed by the presidents evening. The title of the seminar is “Reservoir Fluids; Sampling & DFA, PVT & EOS, Waxy oils, Acid Gases, Asphaltenes & Water Chemistry. Please register in the usual way, through links on the website where you will also find a full agenda and list of fabulous speakers for the day. Finally, congratulations to Monika Adaszkiewicz , the 2014 winner of Dick Woodhouse award for young profession- als. Monika was awarded with a cheque and this prestigious award by Mike Millar as shown in the photograph above. Very well done indeed Monika! We encourage applicants for 2015 to apply through the website. All the very best. Dear Members,

It’s been another busy month for LPS members and the committee as we lead up to the last one day seminar for the

year, the university open day and had the AGM earlier this month.

On 4th November we held our AGM followed by a terrific off topic talk from Dr Michael de Podesta of the National

Physical Laboratory. The talk was titled “How does anyone know what the temperature really is?” and went down

very well indeed. Great use of props and audience participation!

The evening was very well attended and we achieved agreement on all matters, including the approval of the commit-

tee for 2015. Thank you to all who turned out for the evening and showed support.

On 26th November we had a one day University Open Day, this year being hosted at Royal Holloway. A great selec-

tion of talks, attendance and support. We are looking at the best dates to hold this event in 2015 to best suit graduates

and perspective employers.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind you that our final one day seminar for 2015 will be held on 11th Dec

2014 which will be followed by the presidents evening. The title of the seminar is “Reservoir Fluids; Sampling &

DFA, PVT & EOS, Waxy oils, Acid Gases, Asphaltenes & Water Chemistry. Please register in the usual way,

through links on the website where you will also find a full agenda and list of fabulous speakers for the day.

Finally, congratulations to Monika Adaszkiewicz , the 2014 winner of Dick Woodhouse award for young profession-

als. Monika was awarded with a cheque and this prestigious award by Mike Millar as shown in the photograph

above. Very well done indeed Monika! We encourage applicants for 2015 to apply through the website.

All the very best. I look forward to seeing on 11th Dec for the seminar and subsequently the Presidents Evening at

What's So Special About Core Analyses?

Thursday 26th March 2015

London Petrophysical Society Newsletter Issue 11 2014

On Thursday 26th March 2015 the London Petrophysical Society will be holding a one-

day seminar entitled "What's So Special About Core Analyses?" at the Geological Socie-

ty, Burlington House, London. This is the latest in our line of "Basic FE" seminars, and

is intended as an introduction to Core Analyses for Petrophysicists and other Geoscien-

tists. This one-day seminar will provide a basic understanding and vocabulary for profes-

sionals from a wide-variety of backgrounds and it should work to improve the way we

can work together as a team to achieve effective integration of core data into the under-

standing of our reservoirs.

This is a Call for Abstracts for presentations from Oil & Gas Companies, Service Com-

panies, Independent Consultants, Academia and other interested parties on the topic. The

seminar consists of a series of themed talks each lasting between 35 and 40 minutes, with

5 to 10 minutes for questions and discussion. We also hope that we will be able to give a

set of the abstracts and the presentation slides (either as presented or edited) to the partic-

ipants after the event.

We are looking for talks covering topics such as;

Overview - petrophysical fundamentals - porosity, permeability, capillarity

Acquiring good core data and getting it to the laboratory

Introduction to analysing cores - plugging, cleaning/drying, basic analysis and some

basic QC

Calibrating log-to-core for porosity and permeability

Electrical properties and saturations

Capillary pressure and height-function

Wettability and Relative Permeability

Designing completions with core data - sieve, rock strength, formation damage

Understanding reservoir quality - sedimentology, petrography

Core-to-log Integration case studies

This seminar is intended for general technical interest (as opposed to sales or marketing)

and we request that the talks are kept technical in nature, with the use of generic rather

than trade names.

Abstracts should be up to 300 words and may include one or two illustrations and sub-

mitted in Word Document or Adobe PDF format.

Please send you abstracts to Mike Millar ([email protected]), or any member

of the LPS committee. You can also contact Mike if you have any questions or sugges-

tions.
