Most of us are addicted to speed. Every day can feel like a race against the clock or a dash for the finish line that we never seem to reach. At this event, Carl Honoré will reveal that faster isn’t always better.

When it comes to solving complex problems, the best policy is usually to apply a Slow Fix. At this event, see how slowing down ensures we learn to do everything as well (rather than as fast) as possible to work smarter, live better and find lasting solutions that actually work. We can be seduced by quick fixes offering maximum return for minimum effort but they only treat the symptoms not the cause of the problem. Carl will reveal when to slow down to start forging solutions that work both now and in the long term.

about carl honoréCarl Honoré is an award-winning journalist, author and TED speaker. He is also a globetrotting ambassador for the Slow Movement. After working with street children in Brazil, he covered Europe and South America for publications ranging from the Economist and Observer to the Miami Herald, Time and National Post (Canada). Published in 2013, Carl’s latest book is called The Slow Fix.

This event offers a unique opportunity to test yourself and as many colleagues as you can drag along with you to find out just how brilliant you all might be. We promise it won’t be testing at all but it will be fun, enlightening and life changing. Thinking about HR and talent will NEVER be the same again.

You probably hate giving presentations. You probably hate listening to them too. Why? Because most business presentations are too long, too detailed, too boring... and submerged under a blizzard of PowerPoint.

The single most important presentational tool isn’t a slideshow – it’s you! Whether you’re speaking to one person across a table, 20 people in a boardroom or 1,000 people in a ballroom, it’s all about the words you say and how you say them. Graham Davies will reveal how to face any speaking challenge and communicate with clarity, confidence and impact. You’ll learn Graham’s Bare Knuckle 5–step process to effective presenting and how to apply it to all business speaking, from large-scale presentations to one–to–one client meetings.

about Graham daviesGraham Davies has used all the experience he has gained from his time as a criminal barrister and an international speaker to develop a highly transferable presentation methodology that can be adapted to any situation. He

is the joint founder of the consultancy Straight Talking, which has a 15 year track-record in presentation coaching for a spectacular client list, including Tesco, IBM, Porsche, KPMG and UBS. Graham ensures that his clients can be as professional in their spoken communication as they are in every other aspect of their career.

Sir Winston Churchill is widely regarded as Britain’s greatest Prime Minister and leader. His steadfast refusal to consider defeat, surrender, or a compromise peace boosted British resistance, especially during the difficult early days of World War II. Churchill was particularly noted for his speeches and radio broadcasts, which helped inspire the British people and secure victory over Nazi Germany.

Less well known is the huge impact and influence his ancestor John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough and Britain’s greatest general had on him. Churchill’s interest in his ancestor’s struggles against Louis XIV of France provided lessons from history that would prove instructive in his own duel with Adolf Hitler.

Dr David Starkey will explore what this means for modern organisations and leaders and how valuable history can be. He will argue that leaders can and should be guided by history, which judges people as they really are, not as we would like them to be.

about dr david starkeyDr David Starkey is widely regarded as one of the world’s most eminent historians. He is the UK’s leading constitutional and monarchy expert and a colourful media personality. He appears frequently on television and radio, often invited onto such programmes as BBC’s Question Time and Newsnight. His books on Elizabeth I’s early life and Henry VIII’s six wives were Sunday Times bestsellers.

What is a good psychopath? And how can thinking like one help you to be the best that you can be? Professor Kevin Dutton has spent a lifetime studying psychopaths; he has discovered that good psychopaths have a number of character traits that help them to excel in business. Unlike bad psychopaths, they can dial up or down qualities such as fearlessness, focus, conscience and empathy to get the very best out of themselves – and others.

This session will explore how good psychopaths think differently and what that could mean for you. What do you really want from life? And how can you develop qualities such as charm, charisma, self-confidence and courage to get it? The Good Psychopath Manifesto gives you a unique road-map to self-fulfilment in your professional and personal life.

about prof kevin duttonProfessor Kevin Dutton is an expert on the science of social influence and is a research psychologist at the Department of Experimental Psychology, University of Oxford. He is author of Flipnosis: The Art of Split Second Persuasion, The Wisdom of Psychopaths: Lessons in Life from Saints, Spies and Serial Killers and The Good Psychopath’s Guide to Success. He is equally at home (according to Andy McNab – and he should know) on a fruit and veg stall in London’s East End as he is on an academic podium.

We’re told that confidence is the magic ingredient for success but is it really that simple? World-renowned personality expert Professor Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic will explain the complicated truth about confidence and demonstrate why introverts may have an advantage.

Based on 10 years of global study, Tomas will reveal that high confidence can actually make us less likeable, less employable, and less successful in the long run. He will reveal the benefits of low confidence (including being more motivated and self-aware) and teach us how to get ahead at work while also feeling better emotionally and physically. The key to business success lies not only in finding talent in the marketplace, but finding and fostering it within organisations. Talent does not always come pre-packaged with the ‘right’ qualifications, university degree or CV; companies can save time and money by finding the skills they need among existing employees.

This event will look at how we can build robust internal ladders for upward mobility, recognising that real diversity in business today does not only mean gender, race and sexuality – it means diversity in social class background too. Rather than talent scouts, you need talent ladders.

about richard reevesRichard Reeves is a strategy consultant, policy-maker and writer. He is currently a senior fellow in Economic Studies, policy director of the Centre on Children and Families, and editor-in-chief of the Social Mobility Memos blog at The Brookings Institute in Washington DC. Before his move to the US, he worked as director of strategy to the UK’s Deputy Prime Minister and taught on the Senior Executive Programme and MBA Programme at London Business School.

how Sir ALF rAMSEy woN ThE worLD CUPSir GEoFF hUrST

Join us, 50 years on, as we watch dramatic highlights and relive the day that England won the World Cup for the first and only time on Saturday 30 July 1966. As wild celebrations erupted inside Wembley Stadium and people poured onto the streets, it seemed there was just one man able to remain calm. Sir Alf Ramsey, the mastermind behind the nation’s greatest-ever sporting triumph, raised a warm smile but, remarkably, kept his composure as well as his seat on the bench.

We explore 1966 and all that with hat-trick hero Sir Geoff Hurst as he recalls the leadership and management techniques of the man who won the World Cup. Sir Alf, aka ‘The General’, possessed an astute football brain, was flexible with his tactics and as a technician was well ahead of his time. His greatest talent though was his ability to bring out the best in his players. Discover how at this inspirational event with unique first-hand insights from Sir Geoff.

about sir Geoff hurstJust five months into his international career, Sir Geoff Hurst made sporting history when he became the first and, so far, the only player to score a hat-trick in the World Cup final. He won 49 caps and scored 24 goals. He played for West Ham, Stoke City and West Brom and also managed Chelsea for two years from 1979-81 before leaving football to forge a successful career in the insurance business until his retirement in 2002.
