The Google logo is a very simple logo made up of a simple font and some
basic colors. It seems almost amateurish. The simplicity of the logo could
possible represent the simplicity of the search engine. There are numerous
debates/discussions on the web about the google logo. One discussion centered
around the two O's in Google, representing infinity.
The logo was designed by Ruth Kedar. The logotype is based on the Catull
typeface
Every once in a while, you will see the Google logo change to represent a current topic e.g The
Olympics, World Cup etc. These logos are called Google doodles. The doodles are currently
created by Dennis Hwang and he has created over 150 doodles since he started working at
Google. Apparently, the first doodle was produced by the founders Larry and Sergey. The logo
was created when they attended the Burning Man festival in summer 1999. They put a little stick
figure on the home page logo in case the site crashed and someone wanted to know why nobody
was answering the phone.
The House of Chanel, more commonly known as Chanel, is a Parisian fashion
house in France founded by Gabrielle Bonheur "Coco" Chanel. Chanel is
famous for its line of perfumes, clothing and fashion accessories. The Chanel
logo is an overlapping double 'C' - one facing forward and the other facing
backward.
This comes from the name Coco Chanel."Coco" is the nickname frequently used by Chanel
founder, Gabrielle Chanel. The logo was not trademarked until during the first openings of
Chanel stores.
The history of the Harley-Davidson motorcycle began in Milwaukee in 1903.
The Harley Davidson logo is certainly one of the most famous logos in the
world and the fans of Harley take pride in the bikes. The logo is popularly
referred to as the "Bar and Shield" logo. I have been unable to find much
information on the origins of the design of this logo. Once I do find some
information, I will update this page.
Harley-Davidson also licenses its logo, which is a profitable side business ($41 million of
revenue in 2004, or almost 5% of net income. So the next time you purchase a Harley Davidson
belt buckle, pen or sticker, part of that would go to the Harley Davidson company. Also, every
Harley-Davidson dealership has a shop logo, a design that says something about the dealership
and which sets it apart from every other dealership in the world. The next time you drive past a
Harley store, look for its store logo too
There must be very few people who do not recognize the Nike Just
Do it logo. With a big arsenal of superstars such as Michael Jordan,
LeBron James, Andre Agassi, Shane Warne, Maria Sharapova,
Venus and Serena Williams. This list is pretty long. The company
takes its name from the Greek goddess of victory, Nike. The
popular Swoosh logo is a graphic design created by Carolyn
Davidson in 1971 for $35.
The logo represents the wing of the Greek Goddess. The Nike logo is a classic case of a company
gradually simplifying its corporate identity as its frame increases. The company's first logo
appeared in 1971, when the word "Nike," the Greek goddess of victory, was printed in orange
over the outline of a checkmark, the sign of a positive mark. Used as a motif on sports shoes since
the 1970s, this checkmark is now so recognizable that the company name itself has became
superfluous.
The solid corporate logo design check was registered as a trademark in 1995. The Nike logo
design is an abstract wing, designed by Carolyn Davidson, was an appropriate and meaningful
symbol for a company that marketed running shoes. The "JUST DO IT" slogan and logo design
campaign communicated such a strong point of view to their target market that the meaning for
the logo design symbol evolved into a battle cry and the way of life for an entire generation. Isn't
it amazing how a small symbol we call a logo design can make a company into a huge success
The Ford oval trademark is one of the best-known corporate symbols in the world and has been in
regular use for more than 50 years. The script trademark dates back to the very beginning of the
company when Henry Ford’s engineering assistant developed a stylised version of the words
“Ford Motor Company”.
This last logo is the blue oval that Ford released in 2003 in honor of the 100 years Ford Motor
Company had been around. It was named the "Centennial Blue Oval
Cisco Systems is the world leader in manufacturing of Network
related equipment. The name "Cisco" is not an acronym, but an
abbreviation of San Francisco. According to John Morgridge,
employee 34 and the company's first president, the founders hit on
the name and logo while driving to Sacramento to register the
company -- they saw the Golden Gate Bridge framed in the
sunlight.
The name cisco Systems (with the lowercase "c") continued in use within the engineering
community at the company long after the official company name was changed to Cisco Systems,
Inc. Users of Cisco products can still see the name ciscoSystems occasionally in bug reports and
IOS messages
BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke or Bavarian Motor Company.
The company was established in 1913 and based in Munich, Germany. It
started out as an aero engine manufacturer, hence the company logo. The logo
comprised of four quadrants of alternating white and blue color. It is a
stylized representation of an airplane propeller spinning against the clear blue
sky. The logo represents a white propeller blade against a blue sky. It reflects
the origins of BMW as a maker of military aircraft engines during WWI.
Also, white and blue are the traditional colors of Bavaria.
The BMW logo is a registered trademark of the BMW Corporation. Use of the logo here does
not imply endorsement of the organization by this site
Pepsi Logo - Design and History
Pepsi Logo
Pepsi is one of the world's most famous brands much like its rival Coca
Cola. Pepsi Cola was originally called Brad's Drink after its creator,
Caleb Bradham, a pharmacist from North Carolina. Pepsi was a
carbonated soft drink he created to serve his drugstore's customers. The
new name, Pepsi-Cola, was first used on August 28. The Pepsi logo is a
simple globe with the Pepsi colors in the background and the word Pepsi
in the foreground. Pepsi has changed its logo and its slogans a number of
times since its introduction in 1898. The Pepsi slogans through the years
are listed below
1909-1939: Delicious and Healthful

UPS Logo
The UPS logo is one of the most recognized logos in the world. The
company along with Fedex has revolutionalized the way in which packages
are delivered around the world. UPS has changed its login 4 times in the 96
years of the company's existence.
The first logo was created in 1919 and showed an eagle carrying a package
in its talons.
Eighteen years later, in 1937, the logo was once again changed to incorporate
a shield with the letters `UPS' within.
The logo incorporating the beribboned parcel was designed in 1961 by well-
known brand designer Paul Rand who was also responsible for designing the
logos of IBM, Westinghouse and Yale University among others.
The new logo was designed by international brand consultancy Future Brand, which has worked
with clients such as Walt Disney, GlaxoSmithKline, MSN and British Airways. The logo retains
the famous `UPS brown' but replaces the package with a golden arc on top of the shield. The
intention is to convey an impression of "freshness and excitement" that reflects the company's
new vision of `synchronised commerce'. The new logo draws from the company's history,
leverages its brand equity and uses its traditional colours to suggest a company that is thinking
ahead and is leading the way in package delivery and other businesses. "The arc at the top and
the use of light suggest energy and forward-thinking qualities on a global scale. The redeveloped
logo is, in fact, just the cornerstone of the company's reinvigorated visual system.
UPS' association with the colour brown goes back to the early years of the company's existence.
When the company expanded its delivery fleet, its founders were faced with the task of deciding
on what colour to paint their vehicles. Following some discussion, they zeroed in on brown or
yellow as the colours most appropriate for their fleet. However, one of the founders pointed out
that brown was a better bet. In fact, railway carriages of the time were painted brown simply
because it was easier to keep them clean, he explained. And so brown it was! In fact, the
company has the colour brown trademarked and it appears on shade cards in the US as `UPS
brown'
Adobe Systems Incorporated is an American computer software company
headquartered in San Jose, California, USA. Adobe was founded in December
1982 by John Warnock and Charles Geschke, who established the company after
leaving Xerox PARC in order to develop and sell the PostScript page description
language. In 1985, Apple Computer licensed PostScript for use in its
LaserWriter printers, which helped spark the desktop publishing revolution. The
company name Adobe comes from Adobe Creek, which ran behind the house of
one of the company's founders
The current Adobe logo is the alphabet A displyed in white on a red background.
The origins of the current A lie in the original logo shown below which had the
complete name "Adobe Systems Incorporated" on a bluish-gray background. The
A part was modified slightly and is the current logo of the company. Marva
Warnock, one of the founders wife designed the company logo.
Bluetooth is an industrial specification for wireless personal area networks
(PANs). Bluetooth provides a way to connect and exchange information
between devices such as mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers, digital cameras
and video game consoles via a secure, globally unlicensed short-range radio
frequency. The name Bluetooth is derived from the cognomen of a 10th century
king, Harald Bluetooth King of Denmark and Norway from 935 and 936
respectively, to 940. He is known for his unification of previously warring tribes
from Denmark (including Scania, present-day Sweden, where the Bluetooth
technology was invented) and Norway.
Bluetooth likewise was intended to unify different technologies like computers and
mobile phones. The name may have been inspired less by the historical Harald than the
loose interpretation of him in The Long Ships by Frans Gunnar Bengtsson, a Swedish
best-selling Viking-inspired novel. The Bluetooth logo merges the Nordic runes
analogous to the modern Latin H and B: (Haglaz) and (Berkanan). The logo is similar to
an older logo for Beauknit Textiles, a division of Beauknit Corporation. That logo, using
the connection of a reversed K and B for Beauknit, is wider and has rounded corners, but
is otherwise the same
Joomla is an open source content management system. This site is built using
Joomla and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to run sites based on
content. I have found the Joomla logo to be very creative but never really
understood what it meant until I searched for it today.
The Joomla! logo consists of the logotype and the mark. The mark represents
what Joomla! is about...a community coming together as one. If you observe
closely, the mark is made up of four "J's" rotated and linked together that
represent the community coming together as one. This logo has been developed
to promote high visibility of the mark balanced with clear legibility of the

MYSQL is a very popular relational database software. The company claims that it
has over 10 million installations worldwide. The company agreed to be aquired by
Sun Microsystems in January, 2008. MySQL is named after co-founder Monty
Widenius's daughter, My.
The MySQL logo is a jumping dolphin - symbolizing the speed, power, precision
and good nature of the MySQL database and community. The new logo was
designed by Renne Angelvuo and his colleagues at Priority Advertising Oy in
Helsinki, Finland.
The name of the MySQL Dolphin is “Sakila,” which was chosen by the founders of MySQL AB
from a huge list of names suggested by users in our “Name the Dolphin” contest. The winning
name was submitted by Ambrose Twebaze, an Open Source software developer from Swaziland,
Africa. According to Ambrose, the feminine name Sakila has its roots in SiSwati, the local
language of Swaziland. Sakila is also the name of a town in Arusha, Tanzania, near Ambrose's
country of origin, Uganda. This site runs on a MySQL database.
Olympus is one of the leading manufacturers of cameras and related products
in the world. Ever wondered how the logo for the company originated and what
is stood for. Lets start with the name of the company. The company's original
name was Takachiho Seisakusho. In Japanese mythology, it is said that eight
million gods and goddesses live in Takamagahara, the peak of Mt.Takachiho.
The name "Olympus" was selected as the trademark because Mt.Olympus, like Mt.Takachiho,
was the home of gods and goddesses. This trademark is also imbued with the aspiration of
Olympus to illuminate the world with its optical devices, just like Takamagahara brought light to
the world.
Takachiho Seisakusho was renamed Takachiho Optical Co., Ltd. in 1942 when optical products
became the mainstay of the company. In 1947, the name was changed again to Olympus Optical
Co., Ltd. in an attempt to enhance its corporate image.
In Greek mythology, Mt.Olympus is the home of the twelve supreme gods and goddesses.
Olympus was named after this mountain to reflect its strong aspiration to create high quality,
world famous products.
2001 - Current
The yellow line underneath the logo is called the "Opto-Digital Pattern" and it
represents light and boundless possibilities of digital technology. It symbolizes
dynamic and innovative nature of Opto-Digital Technology and Olympus
Corporation.
This logo is called the Communication Symbol of Olympus and it represents
Olympus' brand image.
1970
This logo, used from 1970 to 2000, was designed to give impressions of quality
and sophistication.
1921
The Olympus brand was introduced in February 1921.
This logo was used for microscopes and other products. Brochures and
newspaper ads for cameras also sported this logo. The "OLYMPUS TOKYO"
logo is still in use today.
There was a period in which OIC was used instead of TOKYO in the logo. OIC
stood for Optical Industrial Company, which was a translation of Olympus'
Japanese corporate name at that time. This logo was used for the GT-I and GT-II
endoscopes, among others

VMware, Inc. is a US-based company specializing in virtualization software. The company was
founded in 1998 and is based in Palo Alto, California. The Company is majority owned by EMC
Corporation. The name "VMware" comes from the acronym "VM", meaning "virtual machine",
combined with "ware" from the second part of "software".
VMware's desktop software runs on Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X. VMware's
enterprise software, VMware ESX Server, runs directly on server hardware without requiring an
additional underlying operating system.
The three rounded squares in the logo represent the three different types of virtual machines that

Xerox Corporation unveiled their new logo in January 2007. The new logo is
the biggest change in its corporate history and reflects a transformation of the
company from a document management company to a customer-centric
company built on a continuing history of innovative ideas, products and
services that meet the needs of businesses small to large.
The new Xerox logo is now a lowercase treatment of the Xerox name - in a
vibrant red - alongside a sphere-shaped symbol sketched with lines that link to
form an illustrative "X," representing Xerox's connections to its customers,
partners, industry and innovation, and designed to be more effectively animated
for use in multi-media platforms. Xerox settled on lowercase letters because
they seemed friendlier, and on a deeper red and a thicker font, to stand out
better on the Web and on high-definition television.
The original logo emphasizes the "Document Compamy" focus that was
original focus of the company, which manufactured and sold a range of color
and black-and-white printers, multifunction systems, photo copiers, digital
production printing presses, and related consulting services and supplies.
Some early reviewers feel that the logo looks like a Beach Ball or candy.
Yahoo! Inc. is an global Internet services company. It provides a range of
products and services including a web portal, a search engine, the Yahoo!
Directory, Yahoo! Mail, news, and posting. It was founded by Stanford
University graduate students Jerry Yang and David Filo in January of 1994 and
incorporated on March 2, 1995. Yahoo! has been one of the most visited
websites on the Internet, with more than 130 million unique users. The global
network of Yahoo! websites received 3.4 billion page views per day on average
as of October 2007, making it one of the most visited U.S. websites.
The Web site started out as "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web" but eventually
received a new moniker with the help of a dictionary. The name Yahoo! is an acronym for "Yet
Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle," but Jerry and David insist they selected the name
because of its definition: "rude, unsophisticated, uncouth."
The original Yahoo logo which stands today is bright red in color and went well with the
uncouth definition. The Yahoo philosophy back when the site was created was to be very quick
and so possibly the simplicity of the logo went with that philosophy. Over time, the logo has
changed and there exists a purple version.
Some of the other variations include the Y! Bang logo or the Yahoo Messenger logo.

Cities around the world are bidding to host The 2016 Summer Olympics.
The host city will be announced at the 121st IOC Session to be held in
Copenhagen, Denmark, on October 2, 2009. The 2016 Summer
Paralympics will also be held in the same city and organized by the same
organizing committee.
The following cities are currently in the running. Some of these cities have
recently unveiled their logos. The meanings behind these logos
described below .
Chicago - United States
The Chicago logo's central element is the Chicago star, a symbol
that adorns the city flag. The six points on the star represent
hope, respect, harmony, friendship, excellence and celebration.
The colors of the star appear to represent the colors of the
Olympics.
"A star tells a story of hope, universally seen as a guiding light
for people everywhere,
Placing the Chicago star at the center of our logo symbolizes our
desire to put the athletes at the center of the Games — since
they're the real stars — and celebrate their accomplishments in
the heart of our city." - Organizers
Tokyo - Japan
The Tokyo 2016 logo takes the form of a traditional Japanese
knot known as “MUSUBI”. It integrates the five Olympic
colours into a motif of colourful and decorative knotted strings
which have long been utilised in Japan to signify blessings
during times of celebration.
"This logo, our MUSUBI knot, integrates the values that
underpin both the Olympic Movement and Tokyo 2016. It ties
together sport and culture, urban and natural environment,
Japan and the world, the world and peace" - Organizers
Madrid - Spain
The Madrid logo is in the shape of the palm of a hand painted in
the colors of the Olympic movement. The design features a
cartoon hand traced in the colors blue, yellow, green and red
with an M drawn into the palm in black over "Madrid 2016."
The hand is a symbol to welcome foreigners to the city and its
people, with the colors representing the nationalities and cultures
living within the city, according to the Madrid committee.
The logo - called "Corle" - the logo was one of 2,700 received
by the Madrid bid committee before a short list of 10 were
submitted to the public on Sept. 3. The logo received 31.96
percent of the vote, more than double received by the runnerup.
Prague - Czech Republic
The Prague logo's design builds on the Antique tradition - olive
branch for the Olympic winner. The branch is made out of five
stylised green leaves with shadow in a form of wind born
ribbons. Each of these elements has its own meaning. The branch
has 5 symbolic leaves - matching the number of Olympic circles.
Each of the leaves stands for one continent. Altogether the five
leaves symbolise the five continents to create a symbolic map of
the sports world.
It is a tribute to the athletes from all around the world. The upper
ribbons, below the branch, are in the colours of Prague: red and
yellow. Below them is a blue ribbon which stands for the river
Vltava that flows through Prague. The entire design should
evoke movement. Together with the black text PRAHA there are
5 Olympic colours: blue, black, red, yellow and green."
The original logo consisted of green numbers in the year 2016
shaped like a laurel branch as a symbol of victory. The Olympic
Committee asked that the logo be changed.
Rio de Janiero, Brazil
The Rio De Janiero logo at this point does not seem to have a
full designed logo except for the text Rio 2016 in Green.
Hopefully a better
looking logo will be up soon.
Doha, Qatar
The Doha 2016 Olympic bid committee has revealed its
campaign logo which is a green and purple representation of an
aldahma flower. The Aldahma – the ‘Flower of the Spring’ –
was chosen to represent the vital and energetic spirit of the
season. The Aldahma’s natural habitat in the sands of the desert
draws a parallel with the vibrant and colourful life flourishing in
the State of Qatar. The calligraphy strokes making the words
‘Doha 2016’ are a unique manipulation of the traditional organic
Henna patterns that women use to adorn their hands and arms as
part of social and holiday celebrations. The dynamic interaction
between the Arabic calligraphy and the English type is an
interpretation of modernity.
The committee also revealed that the tagline would be
"celebrating change".
The LPGA, the Ladies Professional Golf Association, is an
American organization for female professional golfers. The
organization, with headquarters in Daytona Beach, Florida, is
best known for running the LPGA Tour, a series of weekly golf
tournaments for elite female golfers from around the world which
runs from February to December each year. In 2007 prize money
on the LPGA Tour is USD $54.285 million.
The LPGA Tour unveiled a new logo in October 2007. The new
logo, the first redesign since 1992 of its classic "swinging lady,"
features a red, white, green, blue and yellow collection of seven
strokes that form a female golfer at the end of her follow through.
The golfer is positioned above bold letters that spell out LPGA.
The new logo "represents the power, strength and athleticism of
our LPGA athletes," LPGA commissioner Carolyn Bivens said in
a press release.
The original logo, shown on the left, was designed in 1992 and is called
the green and gold logo. The old logo is the silhouette of a lady golfer,
modeled after Hall of Fame player Judy Rankin. Apparently, the tour
and many players felt the old logo had become outdated and no longer
represented the brand essence of performance, passion and personality
the LPGA wants to project
The 2008 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament involves 65
schools playing in a single-elimination tournament to determine the
national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It
began on March 18, 2008, and will conclude with the championship
game on April 7 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The entire
event is also known as "March Madness" and is probably one of the most
watched TV events in the US. The host institution this year will be the
University of Texas at San Antonio.
The Final Four logo represents the aspects of the city of San Antonio where the event is being
held. The city, also known as the Alamo city, is famous for its cowboy culture and the 2008
Final Four logo represents that part of the event. The logo comprises of a big cowboy hat and a
matching cowboy belt, that is wrapped around the name of the event "2008 NCAA Final Four".
The belt has the name of the host city. The logo was unveiled in San Antonio in September 2006.
I am personally a little disappointed by the logo as it does not in any way represent the game of
basketball and focuses more on the city. It looks more like a tourism logo than a sporting event
logo and it would probably make a nice tourism logo. That's just my opinion. The final four
teams for the 2008 event are
1. North Carolina
2. Memphis
3. UCLA
4. Kansas
The event concludes on Sunday April 7th, 2008.

SuperBowl XLII is finally upon us, its the undefeated New
England Patriots vs the New York Giants. With SuperBowl XLII
right around the corner, I thought it would be apt to look at the
various SuperBowl logos. The SupwerBowl is the championship
game in the NFL and is played between the winner of the
National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football
Conference (AFC). The SuperBowl is probably the most
watched television event in the United States.
The SuperBowl logo varies each year and typically has something in it to represent the city
where the game is being played. SuperBowl XXI and XXVII were played at the Rose Bowl in
Pasadena and so have a touch of rose in the logo.
The Super Bowl XLII logo was also unveiled, featuring the shape of the state of Arizona in red.
The two horizontal white stripes in the middle represent the vertical lines on the University of
Phoenix Stadium. The turquoise Roman Numerals represent the Native American culture of
Arizona. The red star represents the AFC and the blue star represents the NFC.
Blue Öyster Cult is an American rock band formed in 1967 and
still active in 2007. The band has sold over 14 million albums
worldwide.
The hook-and-cross logo is that of Kronos, the king of the Titans
and father of Zeus in Greek mythology, and is the alchemical
symbol for lead (a heavy metal), one of the heaviest of metals.
Sandy Pearlman, their manager at the time, considered this,
combined with the heavy and distorted guitar sound of the band
and decided the description "heavy metal" would be aptly
applied to Blue Öyster Cult's musical sound.
Alchemical Symbol for Lead is depicted on the left.
The logo was designed by Bill Gawlik and appears on all of the
band's albums
A&W Restaurants, Inc. is a chain of fast-food restaurants,
distinguished by their draft root beer and root beer floats. It is a
fast food franchise company in the United States and in many
other locations around the world, serving a typical fast food
menu of hamburgers and french fries, as well as hot dogs. A
number of its outlets are drive-in restaurants with carhops. The
company name was taken from the last name initials of partners
Roy Allen and Frank Wright. A&W began in 1919 in Lodi,
California, when Roy Allen took on partnership with Frank
Wright to help him with the root beer business he had started in
1919. They branded their product A&W Root Beer after their last
names.
The logo is a fairly simple logo with the letter A&W written on an orange and brown oval
background. The letters A&W are taken from the last name of the founds Roy Allen and Frank
Wright. I suppose the colors probably represent the color of root beer, but I am not sure of that
claim. The logo has undergone many changes since its inception and the section below
documents the history of those changes. For the most part, the logo has remained the same (the
A&W theme being central to the logo)
1919- A plain glass mug was used without letters or words. The
A&W name was not yet used
1921- The letters 'A&W' appeared raised on the glass mug.
1948- Red & Black Bulls Eye Logo on white background.
1961- Brown & Orange Bulls Eye Logo on white background
1968- Orange & Brown oval Logo on white background.
1969- Removed white from behind the Orange & Brown Oval
Logo.
1972- Map of United States in Orange with Brown divisions for
states behind Orange & Brown oval logo.
1976- Returned to Orange & Brown Oval Logo on white
background of 1968. Currently use this logo.
1994- Orange & Brown Oval Logo against a diamond with
yellow, teal with the words "75 Years" and "Authentic Since
1919".
1995- Return to Orange & Brown Oval Logo on white
The Hard Rock Cafe is a popular restaurant chain in the United States and
now across the world. The original Hard Rock cafe was started in
London back in 1971 by two Americans. They wanted to open up a
restaurant that served American food. They began to cover the restaurant
with Rock memorabilia in 1979. The opened their first US restaurant in
Los Angeles in 1982.
Hard Rock has a number of different logos for each of their other businesses. The logos for each
of the business lines is really a derivative of the base logo. The logo itself is pretty simple. Its the
text "Hard Rock" engraved on top of a circle. There are some interesting theories on how the
Hard Rock name itself came about.
1. It was the name of the café depicted on The Doors’ album Morrison Hotel.
2. It was part of founder Isaac Tigrett’s favorite parable: “We are all born into this world with a
big boulder on our shoulder. Every day we chip at it until, at the end of our lives, all that is
left is a small hard rock that makes up you!”
3. A similar name, Bedrock Café, appeared on one of Tigrett’s favorite cartoons—The
Flintstones.

KFC, also known as Kentucky Fried Chicken, is a chain of fast food restaurants
based in Louisville, Kentucky, known mainly for its fried chicken. Since 2002
KFC has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Yum! Brands, Inc.The company
was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders in 1952, with the abbreviated form of
its name adopted in 1991. The colonel has always been a part of the KFC logo.
In the early years, you can see him to have a more serious face but over time,
you can see that his face has become more friendly. Also, the red color in the
logo has given the logo a more bold and lively look.
In April 2007, KFC unveiled their current logo in which the Colonel shed his white suit jacket
for a red cook's apron. The new logo includes bolder colors and a more well-defined visage of
the late Kentucky Fried Chicken founder, who will keep his classic black bow tie, glasses and
goatee. The logo is changing for only the fourth time in 50 years, and for the first time in nearly a
decade. The smiling Colonel is featured against a red background that matches his red apron,
with the KFC brand name in black thick lettering under his chin.
The company also began using its original appellation of Kentucky Fried Chicken again for its
signage, packaging and advertisements in the United States as part of a new corporate re-
branding program; newer and remodeled restaurants will have the new logo and name while
older stores will continue to use the 1991 signage. Additionally, the company continues to use
the abbreviation KFC freely in its advertising. Internationally the company is still known as
KFC.
Notes:
In 2006, KFC claimed to have made the first logo visible from outer space, though Readymix has
had one since 1965. KFC says "[It] marked the official debut of a massive global re-image
campaign that will contemporize 14,000-plus KFC restaurants in over 80 countries over the next
few years." The logo was built from 65,000 one-foot-square tiles, and it took six days on site to
construct in early November. The logo measured a record-breaking 87,500 square feet (8,129.0
m²),and was placed in the Mojave Desert near Rachel, Nevada

Panera Bread (called St. Louis Bread Company in the St. Louis area) is a chain
of bakery-café restaurants in the United States and Canada which sells breads,
sandwiches, soups, bakery items, and organic foods; some locations offer dinner
pizzas. Panera is considered a "fast casual" restaurant.
The Panera Bread logo is an illustration of a woman with flowing hair holding a
loaf of bread in her arm. This also goes with the company slogan of "A loaf of
bread in every arm". The lady holding the bread is also known as "Mother
Bread". The logo and the entire branding for the new company was developed
by Heckler Associates and they host a very interesting case study of how they
rebranded "the St. Loius Bread Company" to "Panera Bread". See their website
for details.
Interestingly, the process of making sourdough bread requires a small piece of
the dough used to make the previous batch of bread dough. This starter piece is
often called the "mother." Whenever Panera opens stores in a new region, a
piece of the original starter that was created in the 1980s is lovingly carried to
the new bakery to ensure that original Panera quality and character will rise
again and again.

The Republican National Convention will be held in Mineapolis-Saint
Paul between September 1-4, 2008. The convention is held during the
election year. The National conventions combine three important
functions:
nomination of candidates for office of President and Vice President;
formulation and adoption of a statement of party principles - the
platform;
and adoption of rule and procedures governing party activities,
particularly the nomination process for presidential candidates in the
next election cycle.
The party officials and convention organizers unveiled the Convention logo. The logo features
the silhouette of a triumphant elephant, a Party symbol dating back to 1874, along with the
names of the host cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul. The back of the elephant has the stripes
of the flag, the eye is one of the stars from the flag and the 2008 is in Red. The circle around the
logo shows the name of the host cities, Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
Anyway familiar with Linux has seen its logo, Tux the penguin, but I am
not sure how many of you knew his name or how he originated. In 1996
when the OS was picking up steam, there was a suggestion to design a logo
for the Linux operating system. Many designers came up with the logos,
some being parodies of other Unix flavors while others were based on
animals such the shark and eagle. Linus Torvalds, mentioned that he was
rather fond of penguins and then the entire focus shifted to building a
penguin based logo. In one of his emails, Linux gave his thoughts on how
the penguin should look like and Tux was born out of that ideas.
Why was he called Tux. There are a couple of theories here.
- The first was (T)orvalds (U)ni(X) which resulted in TUX
- The other reason was that penguins look like they are wearing a Tuxedo.
Some of the other names included Homer (from the Simpsons) and Linnie.
Wikipedia is a multilingual, web-based, encyclopedia project operated by
the not-for-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Many language versions of
Wikipedia are free content, while others, such as the English version,
include non-free material. As of September 2007, Wikipedia had
approximately 8.29 million articles in 253 languages, comprising a
combined total of over 1.41 billion words for all Wikipedias. The English
Wikipedia edition passed the 2,000,000 article mark on September 9, 2007,
and as of November 3, 2007 it had over 2,075,000 articles consisting of
over 902,000,000 words. Wikipedia's articles have been written
collaboratively by volunteers around the world and the vast majority of
them can be edited by anyone with access to the Internet. Steadily rising in
popularity since its inception, it currently ranks among the top ten most-
visited websites worldwide.
The logo is one of my favorite logos. It captures the essence of what the
site stands for in my mind. The logo was selected as part of an international
logo design contest. The logo is a jigsaw puzzle in the shape of the globe
with the alphabets in many languages written all over the globe. .
Prehistoric (non) logo
On January 15, 2001, Wikipedia's first day of independent existence,
Jimbo Wales used the American flag as a temporary Wikipedia logo. It
wasn't intended to be permanent. See meta:OldWikiPediaLogo for the
old logo discussion.
The original official logo
The first Wikipedia logoWikipedia's first true logo was an image that was
originally submitted as a Nupedia logo. Jimbo thought it would be a much
better logo than the flag, and it remained for the next eight months.
The pre-current logo
The pre-current Wikipedia logoIn November 2001, Wikipedians began
suggesting new logos. A short list of leading candidates was chosen. The
winner was the logo contributed by The Cunctator.
The late-comer
After the winning logo was chosen, Mark Ryan designed one in a similar
style, but in colour. It was for some time used as the Meta logo.
The international effort and contest
Because of its English text, this logo was not ideal for the Wikipedias in
other languages. Some wikis chose a similar design with text in their
own languages (e.g. the Spanish Wikipedia). Others used the English
logo but added the color of a national flag (most of the Nordic language
projects, Danish, for example) or a translation of "The Free
Encyclopedia" (e.g. German). Still other designed a completely different
logo (e.g. the French Wikipedia).
Paullusmagnus' contest-winning logo
Nohat's Final logoAn International logo contest was conducted to find a
new logo that was suitable for all languages. Paullusmagnus developed
the winning Puzzle sphere design. Variants on the final logo were then
discussed with Nohat putting forward several options. One of Nohat's
variants was chosen as the final product.
I was in the Toys 'R Us the other day when I was asked for a
donation to support research on Autism. The logo of Autism
Speak certainly caught me eye. Autism is classified by the
World Health Organization and American Psychological
Association as a developmental disability that results from a
disorder of the human central nervous system . It is diagnosed
using specific criteria for impairments to social interaction,
communication, interests, imagination and activities.
The Autism Speaks logo is a jigsaw piece puzzle that also looks like a toddler sitting up. The
jigsaw piece represents the goal of the organization to solve the puzzle of autism. I was unable to
find more information on the logo but I liked the design a lot. I also liked the line "Its time to
listen" that goes with "Autism Speaks". Overall I think its a very creative logo.
Autism Speaks is a New York City-based advocacy organization, founded in February 2005 by
Bob Wright and his wife Suzanne, to improve public awareness about autism and to promote
autism research . Bob Wright is the Vice Chairman of General Electric. The Wrights founded
Autism Speaks a year after their grandson, Christian, was diagnosed with autism, in order to help
find a cure for autistic spectrum disorders. Autism Speaks has drawn considerable interest from
autism activists, the media, and others for its extensive lobbying and fund raising, spearheaded
by the Wrights on behalf of the many children and families greatly affected by the disorder
United Way of America is a non-profit organization that works
with the 1,303 local United Way offices throughout the United
States in a coalition of charitable organizations to pool efforts in
fundraising and support. The focus of United Way is on
identifying and resolving pressing community issues, as well as
making measurable changes in the communities through
partnerships with schools, government agencies, businesses,
organized labor, financial institutions etc. Hence the origin of the
name United Way. The organization has roots in Denver,
Colorado, all the way back from 1887.
The United Way Logo consists of three elements
- the rainbow of hope,
- the hand of support and
- the person as a symbol of humanity -
These elements are helpful in communicating important United Way brand characteristics -
caring, inspiring, trustworthy and approachable
Vruksha The Charities is a group of not-for-profit organisations
in India started by a group of likeminded professionals
committed to the cause of humanitarian and environmental
concerns. Couple of charities and foundations were founded by
Vruksha. The organisations are active across a broad range of
areas including opportunity and enterprise, education, health, the
built environment, responsible business, the natural environment
and the arts. The charities reflect INDIA’s long-term and
innovative perspective, and seek to address areas of previously
unmet need. I stumbled upon the site one day and was intrigued
by the logo. The meaning behind the logo was described to me
by Suresh and is shown below.
The Blue Color represents Vruksha's trustworthiness and commitment. It also represents Health,
peace, and dream. The Yellow color represents Hope and Happiness giving to the deserved
people. Yellow is sunshine. On the one hand it denotes Happiness and joy. Yellow shines with
optimism, enlightenment, and happiness and yellow carry the promise of a positive future.
The two people who are in the form of Trunk represents the people who are deserved.
The green Shade represents that it is providing Hope and happiness to those people who are in
need, on the other hand
the green color also represents the environmental concerns and protection
The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) is an international non-governmental organization
for the conservation, research and restoration of the natural environment, formerly named the
World Wildlife Fund, which remains its official name in the United States and Canada. It is
the world's largest independent conservation organisation with over 5 million supporters
worldwide, working in more than 90 countries, supporting 15,000 conservation and
environmental projects around the world. It is a charity, with approximately 90% of its
funding coming from voluntary donations by private individuals and businesses.
WWF’s world renowned panda logo was designed by its founder chairman, the naturalist and
painter Sir Peter Scott, in 1961. It was then that WWF-UK, the first national organisation in
the WWF international network, was started. The WWF logo has an immensely appealing and
positive image, which is seen as caring, responsible and credible. This in turn means an
inherent emotional and commercial value is attached to the use of the logo, reflecting their
appeal and values.
WWF’s name and logo can be used as a powerful product differentiation tool. After
evaluation, WWF may allow an organisation to use the name and logo under four
circumstances:
• when the product directly supports our work by being at the leading edge of sustainable
design;
• when WWF enters a full partnership with an organisation, promoting a product which
meets many different organisational goals and objectives;
• when the business has donated money to support our work; or
• when a company product generates income for WWF from licence royalties.
The complete history of changes to the logo is shown below
