DEFINITIONDEFINITION Systematic daily or hourly
record of activities, events, and/or occurrences.
Log book is an important
record maintained for each vehicle regarding its history,capital cost,capacity,maintenence and running details etc.
The information in the log book appears divided into three parts
FIRST PARTFIRST PARTThis part helps in ascertaining fixed or
standing charges;it includes,• Name of the vehicle and registration no • Date of purchase• Firms name from where purchased• Purchase price• Purchase price of equipments• Passenger carriage capacity• Taxes paid• Insurance policy no,insurers name,premium
paid • Estimated worklife,depreciation,scrap value
SECOND PARTSECOND PART
This part is related to the maintenance of the vehicle and it includes;
• Vehicle staff drivers,cleaners,mechanic their grades address etc
• Garage rent,repair of garage and garage staff expense etc
• Repairs and maintenance costs -servicing and cleaning,repairs and cost of maintaining the vehicle
THIRD PARTTHIRD PARTThis part is related to the running
charge of the vehicle,such as• Fuel expense• Oil and grease• Depreciation of tyres,battery etc• Insurance of the goods carried• Salary of driver,cleaner ,mechanic etc
DAILY LOG SHEETDAILY LOG SHEET A daily log sheet is given to the driver for
each trip.This is completed by the driver and is handed over to the manager.This sheet contains information regarding the Third part of Log book
ContentsContents• Trips made per day• Kilometers the vehicle has run during the day• Load or passengers carried during the day• Petrol and oil consumed during the day and
average consumption per KM or average kilometers per litre
• Hours for which the vehicle remained idle and the causes for the same

Logbook is found to be a handy record by a lot of industries.The format and entries differ depending on the organization using it.For eg; in a hotel log books are used by front office dept and security dept for entirely different purposes.In the case of a logbook maintained the engineering dept for generators things would be still different
The purpose served by the log book is immensely important and the maintenance of log book is very important for any organization.
