Claude Monet and His Garden at Giverny - Looking at Perspective

Claude Monet had the most spectacular garden in a small village called Giverny near to Paris. He was inspired by the plants, features and the colours in his garden and spent many years painting in it. Here are some pictures of his garden now.

You may notice some of the many paths in his garden. Look carefully at the top one of the garden gate. Can you see how the path at the front of the photo looks very wide? But as the path travels further back it looks very narrow? This is called perspective. Basically, things closer to us look bigger and things further away look smaller.

-Go and have a look outside now. Notice how things further away look much smaller.

-Let’s have a go at making our own perspective picture.

Imagine a path in your own garden or a path you know in a park. If you can’t think of one, then use your imagination or borrow some of the photos from Giverny or below. Does your path have flowers or trees along the sides? What is at the end?

-Have a look at the step by step tutorial below. This one is of a road going into the mountains, but you can use the guide to create your own perspective picture. Colour or shade or paint it however you like. We’d love to see your masterpieces so please do email in a photo if you would like to share.

Have fun!
