It has been reported that soccer star David Beckham’s proposed professional soccer team, Miami Beckham United, is in talks with the Miami-Dade County to purchase county-owned land at market value for a 25,000 seat stadium in Overtown. The stadium construction costs would be funded privately without public dollars, but would not include a parking garage. Critics of the proposed soccer stadium are concerned about the lack of parking, while stadium proponents say that public transportation would provide sufficient access to the stadium.

The Frost Museum of Science under development at Museum Park, was originally proposed as a $275 million public-private partnership with $165 million coming from Miami-Dade County and $110 million to be raised from the private sector. The project has experienced a funding shortfall due to a failure to meet the private fundraising goal. Miami-Dade County, which has already invested $165 Million in the project as promised, recently approved an additional $49 million county bailout to finish the project by the end of 2016.

Miami-Dade County includes many coastal municipalities known to be on the frontlines in the battle against rising sea-levels. Most scientists say that the rate of sea-level rise is accelerating steadily and that the intrusion of salt water into fresh water aquifers threatens to contaminate South Florida’s drinking water supply. Elevated roadways, pumping systems, and nature-based infrastructure are among some of the proposed solutions to address sea-level rise related issues like flooding and coastal erosion.

Recently Miami-Dade County discovered above normal levels of tritium in Biscayne Bay, near Florida Power & Light's cooling canals at Turkey Point. Tritium is not considered a health risk and is being used by scientists to track the location of cooling canal water. The findings indicate other pollutants, including ammonia, phosphorus and super salty water, may be leaking into Biscayne Bay and could damage marine life. The State of Florida fears increased underground salt concentrations resulting from the leaking canals could threaten the Biscayne Aquifer, Miami-Dade County’s primary source of drinking water. FPL says it is working with the State and has plans to address the situation and that there is no current threat to public health.
