The USW Summer Institute provides priceless knowledge, and experience from other Locals that cannot be found elsewhere. The classes are in depth, even intense in some cases, and empower not only our leadership, but each and every one of us. Issue From June 3rd to June 8th, the United Steel Workers (USW) hosted the 2012 District 8 Summer Institute. In attendance was the leadership from Local 831, including Officers and Representatives, along with members serving on various committees for our Local. The USW District 8 Summer Institute is held annually and offers vital training for our Union leadership and committee members. In our current environment of “give to the rich, take from the working class”, this training is of the utmost importance in the fight to protect the middle class. As we all know, our friends (and enemies) that are elected to represent us, continually pass laws and change the regulations and rules that govern the very environment we work in. The Summer Institute offers the best training to combat, or even take advantage of, these laws and changes; and will ultimately pay the highest return to each and every person that punches the clock in our plant. Please make a note to remind yourselves that the payment from the Goodyear Retiree VEBA will always be paid out in the month following the end each of the quarter.

share Plan newsMany have asked how the reduced work schedule will affect the Share Plan

and a potential payout. The only affect that the recently announced time out of our schedule will have on the Share Plan will be in the conversion cost metric. The conversion goal is based on the monthly ticket for the plant and due to schedule adjustment the goal will be adjusted with it. This will keep the time out from having a negative impact on the Share Plan and still give us an opportunity to receive a payout for the second quarter. We still need to make the ticket and cut down on waste and cost to put us in position for a payout.

This day in historyThe month of June 2002 represents a special time in history for sixteen past

and present members of USW local 831. In this month’s issue of the Informer, we celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the graduating class of the 2002 Maintenance technician Co-op program.

As a cooperative effort between Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Danville Community College, the program consisted of intensive classroom and lab instruction. Included in this two-year program was computer based as well as, structured on the job training.

Goodyear-Danville was the pilot plant for this program at the time and garnered two state awards. We still, today, have an entry-level program in our maintenance department for the purpose of training young people in industrial maintenance “craft” work.

We are proud to say that many of those graduates are still hard at work in our maintenance department and contribute greatly to our success. They are: Pipefitters, Carlton Carter, Roger Collins, Ronnie Setliff (ERB), and Tammy Spencer. Electricians, Toby Robertson, Israel Stephens, Debra Chism, Omar Grimes (ERB), Teresa Long (ERB), and David Ross with mechanic Steve Trent rounding out those still turning wrenches in the maintenance department. Congratulations to you all.

The annual Soar picnic was held at Shelter #21 on Tuesday, June 19. There were 105 members present and 6 guests. We all enjoyed hot dogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings. Members brought a good variety of delicious desserts.

Door prizes were awarded and a free Brave’s ballgame ticket was given to each member.

June Membership Meeting MinutesUSW Local 831 held its regular membership meeting on June 14, 2012 with President Danny Barber presiding. These are the highlights of the meeting:

• Prayer was led by Courtney Dixon followed by the Pledge of Allegiance

Local 831 Attends summer Institute

Protected: striking Machinists hold the Lines at Lockheed Martin and caterpillar

(UCS) Strikes by some 4,500 Machinists at Lockheed Martin and Caterpillar held strong in June after more than a month.

Strikers at a Caterpillar plant in Joliet, Illinois, turned down the company’s latest contract offer May 30, continuing a walkout that began May1.

The 800 IAM members at Caterpillar rejected increased healthcare costs and inadequate pay raises. The union has offered to reopen negotiations but the company has refused to return to the bargaining table.

Meanwhile, the strike by 3,650 workers at Lockheed Martin – also IAM members – struck home at corporate headquarters in Bethesda, MD.

“We’re here to show Lockheed Martin that we know where they live,” said IAM Local 776 Business Rep Joe Alviar as hundreds of Machinists and their supporters chanted “Stop freezing pensions!” in front of the aerospace giant’s Bethesda headquarters on May 24.

“And if we need to keep embarrassing them in front of their neighbors, that’s just what we’ll do,” Alviar said

If It’s Broke, Fix It!While I’m hoping the Supreme Court will deem the Patient

Protection and Affordable Care Act, known as the ACA, “Constitutional” opposed to, “Unconstitutional”, doesn’t seem likely. Based on the grounds of the Federal Government mandating everyone to have health Insurance. But let’s examine the perspective of the ACA in a simple fashion. Remove all party affiliation- No TeaBag-I mean Partiers; Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Liberals, Conservatives, Socialist and so-forth and formulate your opinion. The below insert was taken from: “http:underthemountainbunker.com”, with a simple explanation of the ACA.

An explanation of the Affordable Care Act that’s simple enough to understand:

Bob: Hi, insurance company. I’d like to buy some health insurance. Insurance company: No. You had cancer when you were 3 years old, and the cancer could come back. We’re not selling you health insurance. Bob: It’s not my fault I got cancer when I was three! Besides, that was years ago! Insurance company: If we sell insurance to you, we’ll probably lose money, and we’re not doing it. Bob: But I need insurance more than anyone! My cancer might come back! Insurance company: We don’t care. We’re not selling you insurance. Obama: Hey, that’s totally not fair. Bob is right, he does need insurance! Sell Bob some insurance. Insurance company: If we have to, I guess. Mary: This is cool. Obama said the insurance company has to sell insurance to anyone who needs it. Sam: Hey, I have an idea. I’m going to stop paying for health insurance. If I get sick, I can always go buy some insurance then. The insurance company won’t be able to say no, because Obama’s told them they have to sell it to anyone who needs it! Dave: that’s a great idea! I’m not paying for health insurance either, at least not until I get sick. Insurance company: Hey! If everyone stops paying for insurance, we’ll go bankrupt! Obama: Oh come on Sam and Dave, that’s not fair either. Dave: I don’t care. It saves me money. Obama: Oh for god’s sake. Sam, Dave, you have to keep paying for health insurance, and not wait until you’re sick. You too, Mary and Bob. Mary: But I’m broke! I can’t buy insurance! I just don’t have any money. Obama: Mary, show me your piggy bank. Oh, wow, you really are broke. Ok, tell you what. You still have to buy insurance, but I’ll help you pay 95% of the cost. Mary: thank you. Obama: I need an aspirin. Insurance company: We’re not paying for that aspirin.

Make sense? Absolutely...President Obama continues to fight for the working American people and combat the continued rising costs of healthcare. The dialogue above reflects a more than reasonable solution for Americas Health Care Problem, however, creates a problem for the pharmaceutical companies. It will create challenges to gain profit from illness and sickness but will alleviate some of the burden of taxpayers paying for healthcare services that some cannot afford. It will challenge the billion-dollar healthcare industry on being honest and doing their jobs. It will reward those who comply with better solutions for the sick, long-term Vs., the dependency of a continued medication regiment that caters to Americas health and drug problem. Innovations in any program take time to be introduced and used proficiently. The ACA simply accomplishes these two things; “Makes Health Care Affordable For All and Places Emphasis on the Value of Life”. With over a trillion dollar expenditure on Health-Care every year for America, we need a solution. We’re required to have car insurance (material items) why not health insurance? We cannot afford to allow a broken system to go un-repaired.

On another topic of discussion, 2013 is right around the corner. We’re already seeing and feeling the strain of North American Tire’s projections-”For the full year in North America, Goodyear expects the consumer replacement market to decline between 1 percent and 3 percent”-Associated Press.

Short-time and days out during what is typically the most productive season for Goodyear, further emphasis being prepared for 2013 and hints to the current state of our business. Prior planning is essential.

With vacation season approaching, I hear of more and more people having their vacation checks directly deposited into their banking accounts. Did I miss something? When did this change take affect?

According to a notification posted in the plant on March 28 of this year, if an employee has direct deposit, his/her vacation advance will be paid via direct deposit. Goodyear will send the direct deposit information to the bank when the advance is processed. The new procedure became effective on April 1, 2012. Let us encourage you to read all plant postings, as some may be crucial as to their content.

Protected: WI Gov. scott Walker rides to Victory on “Flood of secret corporate cash”

(UCS) Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, fueled by $31 million in right-wing/GOP/business contributions, beat back a recall challenge June 5, defeating Democrat Tom Barrett 53-46. Democrats appeared to have taken control of the state Senate, however, with late results showing former state Sen. John Lehman beating incumbent Sen. Van Wanggaard by less than 1,000 votes.

The Senate is not scheduled to reconvene until January 2013, and 16 of the 33 seats are up for election this November, but Democrats would be able to block Walker if he calls a special session this year.

“Wisconsin forced the governor to answer for his efforts to divide the state and punish hard-working people,” said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. Noting that the recall “laid the groundwork for a powerful movement to push back against Walker-style anti-working family policies everywhere,” Trumka said that “Wisconsin is a small piece of a broader global movement of people pushing back on the corporate-driven policies that have favored the super-rich at the expense of good jobs, education and the health of our communities” and urged activists to sign a solidarity pledge to commit to “building on the momentum working people created in Wisconsin and beyond to protect good jobs, working families and workplace rights.”

Walker set off the recall fight when he rammed through

a law in 2011 curtailing collective bargaining rights for 200,000 state and local government workers, part of a nationwide campaign against union power orchestrated by the American Legislative Exchange Council.

Walker’s surprise move sparked mass protests in Madison, the state capitol, as up to 100,000 people jammed the building and camped out on the lawn for weeks. Democrats and unions gathered over a million signatures on petitions for recalling Walker and mobilized their ground troops to battle at least $31 million in TV ads that Walker and his right-wing/GOP/business allies raised – mostly from out-of-state contributors — outspending Barrett by at least 10-1.

The GOP also apparently mounted a large well-funded last-minute ground game.

“Whether it was standing in the snow, sleeping in the Capitol, knocking on doors or simply casting a vote, we admire the heart and soul everyone poured into this effort,” said Trumka. “Adding to this gargantuan challenge of recalling only the third governor in American history was the flood of secret corporate cash distorting our democracy – a dangerous example of a post-Citizens United America,” he added, referring to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2010 ruling that unleashed unregulated and unaccountable corporate cash into U.S. elections.

Summer Car Care Tips!!!The combination of summer heat, unexpected delays

flashlight, flares, bottled water and snacks.If the need should arise, see any of your local car

June 1 – July 4 is national Firework safety Month5. Do not allow children to play with fireworks. Always

have a responsible adult present.6. Do not try and make your own fireworks. They are

very complicated and should be left up to the professionals to make.

7. Do not light multiple fireworks at once. This can be very dangerous because if something goes wrong with more than one, you will be out numbered.

8. Do not point fireworks at people or throw them at people.

9. Do not carry fireworks in your pocket, backpack or purse!

10. When you dispose of fireworks, make sure you soak them in a bucket of water first.

11. When you light fireworks, eye protection is very important. Make sure all body parts are out of the way.

Firework safety is a big problem. There are thousands of people treated each year for firework related injuries. A majority of these injuries could have been prevented by using safety measures when handling fireworks.

There are some basic safety measures you should take when using fireworks.

1. Buy fireworks from reliable dealers. Buying fireworks from a guy who is selling them from his trunk is not a good idea!

2. Make sure you read all the directions and follow them as well. You are using explosives, so it is important you know what you should do.

3. I know this sounds silly but I have to say it; use fireworks outdoors only. People have tried on several occasions to create ‘light shows’ indoors.

4. Make sure you have water nearby, and not just a bucket of water. A garden hose that is hooked up and working well is important as well.
