How It Feels ToBecome The Champ

Winning the State Championship hasbeen a great thrill, but I feel that thehonor' and prestige that goes with thetitle should be attributed to the one per-son who has made the title of state cham-pion what it is today. Her name is syn-onymous with archery. Pat Hamilton isthe greatest of champions.

Pat, you have set tlhe precedent. Thestandards are high. I shall try to thebest of my ability to maintain them.

Tihe two short years that I have par-ticipated in archery have been eventfuland exoiting. It has provided me withmany pleasant hours of relaxation andcomradeship.> 'Dhere is no other sportwhere you have the opportunity to meetand make friends with So many nice.people., These f'ricndshlps -I-value- veryhigihly,

Archers have been characterized asbeing very individualtstic. Tthis trait hasnever been more fully demonstrated thanat the re-organization meetings of theVirginia Bowhunters Association. I shallnever fong et it. Everyone ihad their ownideas and opinions, and believe me theyexpressed them. Yet, from this multi-tude of opinions, policies were made thatwere agreeable to everyone and due totheir efforts one of the best organized, most progressive organizations in thecountry has evolved. Although there

were many differences of opimon, allhad one common goal, let's do somethingfor ,the good of archery.

The results are readily apparent. Weare the fastest growing, and one of themost respected organizations in theState. Tihis is an envied position, and Iknow all of us are very proud that wehave been a part of it.

ROSS E. GARLETTS

To those archers who go by the An-nual VBA State Tournament, anotheryear has passed. Our hats off to' thenew champs, and especially to KermitWhitacre of 'Shawnee Bowman in Win-chester, who set a new record winningthe coveted crown with the spectacularscore of 1321, a 420 field round, 480broadhead and a 421 hunters round shotin the rain. Truly a championship per-fonmance in anyone's book. Good luckto all our champs in the nationals, and if .they can continue the kind of shootingexhibited ·at Harrisonburg this year, I'msure Virginia will be in the running.

Another milestone has passed in thatthe first fiscal year of the reorganizedVISA eias passed and your new afficershave been elected. To those who sup-ported your reporter with their votes, Iextend my a.ppreciation for their confi-dence. To all, I pledge my best wjthinmy ability and shall sincerely do whatI can to earry on, wbbh the !help of youand the other officers, the wonderfulprogress already accomplished in thepast years oy your association. To fueretiring officers, congratulations on ajob well done. To tne re-elected, lJhesame, and you are the working cogsthat make the wheels turn. Keep up thegood work.

Don't know haw many of you are tak-ing advantage of the bowfishing seasonfor carp and gar, !bUltif you haven't, youare missing out on a barrel of fun, We'veheard many 'comments that tt's "more ex-citing than deer hunting." We won't ar-gue that point, but here in the Va.lleyit's catching on like a prairie-fire. Somearchers have landed better than a hun-dred carp already this season. Your re-porter tried a couple weeks ago andhas really flupped over it. Beats squirrelhunting and don't think those Sluggishlooking carp are any fools. 'l1hey are aswary as any game animal we have comeacross. We haven't heard how ,bhesouth-ern guys are doing wath gar, but if it isanything like is taking place here inthe Valley-Boy! We would like to hearreports from you as to how many ofbhese rough fish you have taken andtheir average weight. If we have tJhis in-formation, we can report to the com-mission how many have been removedfrom the waters of our streams, and nogame violations! Also please do notleave your catch lying on mhe banks torot in the sun. 'Dhey jUIStplain stink!Either bury bhem or give them to' someone who will make use of .them. A tip to'you who garden, they're gaod fertilizer,Send your reports to me at P. O. Box229, Harrisonburg, Va., by August iou,

At rohe last VrBA meeting in Lynch-burg, we had same repents of 'dissatis-faction over the 10% ruling. Unrortu-nately, in aur sport there are alwayssame trophy happy archers who sand-

bag and spoil the whale sport, for every-one else. True they are a minority ofthe group, but they louse-up tQ1ewhaledeal far everyone else. This has alwaysbeen a perennial problem, It is recogniz-ed tha:t in some cases it does tpenalize thehonest shooter, but to" date this is thebest system ,to' curb the sand-bagger. Itdoes not Iget them all, but it has helped,If we realize that bhis rule was made asprotection to the honest archer and notto' penalaze him, the rule shows i<t'sbet-ter side. 'I'here are provisions far dawn-grading if desired, study them. 'Let's nottear it apart ar throw it out until wecan improve it by modificat.ion or sub-stitution of a better rule,

We are proud to' report that your re-presentatives to' the Mid-Atlantic Statesmeeting of the NFAA held dn Annapolis.Md., were bhe states of Maryland, WestVirginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, NewJersey, District of Columbia and Virginiasat together and swapped ideas, thatyour state association appears far aheadof mast of the others, We learned samethings from the other states which we

wtll consider and weigh, but the mastoutstanding feature of the whole meet-ing was tlhe way in which our VBAgave our clubs complete freedam intheir awn club affairs and at the sametime standardized our operatrons an astate wide basis. Also our standardizedpin award system was the hit of themeeting. Wouldn't; be surprised if severalather states adapted it in the near fu-ture. A Mid-Atlantic states tournamentwill be held in 1959. We will keep youposted as plans develop.

Say, an page 21 of the July issue ofArchery Magazine is an idea that lookslike a good ane far us to' adapt. The B& B Arrow Identification System seemsto' be a simple system to' 'Put into effect. We'll work it up and have it ready assoon as possible, This looks like it willget mare arrows back to their ri'glhtfulowners than any otlhar method we haveheard of to' date. It does not affect yourindividual crest, yet identifies what clubyou belong. Strays ca.n be bunched andexchanged at shoots or the VBA meet-ing every quarter.

Those of yau who could not aotend bheVBA State Taurnament bhis year missedthe presentation of the Big Game Awardand Honorary Membership made to'"Uncle Tam" Herring of the Game &Inland F'isherdes Commission. It wasdeeply appreciated by our good friend"Uncle Tom" and no one person marejustly deserved such recognitton far ihismany years of dedicated service to' out-door spontsmen, Were it not far suchas he, there would not Ibe much forsuch as we. Now's the time to startplanning far ,this fall's hunting as it iscloser than you think. Less than 90days until the big moment arrives. Bet-ter start getting your; tackle and gear inshape.
