The PT range of 4, 6 and 8 way summer boxes are a perfect match to any PT load cell.

Fitted with liquid tight strain relief cable fittings. The PT100SB accepts a wide range of cable diameters.

Enclosed in a tough polycarbonate housing, easily accessible yet securely closed and positively sealed by way of its O ring screw on cover and external fixing holes.

Designed and produced for the installer, with simple to reach and positive control trim pots for load measurement correction.

All Summer Boxes contain an overall span trim to ease the requirements for indicator re-calibration after cornering.

The 6 and 8 way also contain section trim adjustment to enable trimming of load cell pairs or sections along a weighbridge.

The HPC (High Precision Compression) is a state of the art measurement device. Its highly sophisticated and super sensitive electronics are housed in a rugged fully stainless steel enclosure. Fitted with power surge arrestors, anti-rotation mechanism and inert gas filled for component longevity, the HPC provides for a true IP68 enclosure rating with greater than 300 hours protection at 1.5m immersion.

Purpose designed to meet the needs of the weighbridge and truck scale manufacturer, the cell is supplied in two optimum weighbridge cell capacities of 30t and 45t.

To ensure the exceptional performance of the HPC is optimised, PT offer specially designed mounting accessories, please refer accessory part numbers opposite.

The HPC has formal approval in many countries for both capacities. It has a three-year warranty and is supplied individually packed with a detailed accuracy certificate traceable by serial number.

The SSC (Stainless Steel Compression) load cell is available in 6 capacities, 5t to 100t.

This load cell continues to be an industrial workhorse within the weighing industry. A natural choice for high capacity hopper, tank and silo weighing, where long life and stability are pre-requisites.

It is an excellent selection for many hostile environments due to its welded heavy-duty stainless steel construction and high weighing capacity, coupled with a quality IP67 protection rating.

The special mounting accessories make the SSC an ideal choice for the professional weighing installer, using our simple top & bottom mount Type 3, side adjustable restraining mount Type 1 or the unique side & uplift restraining mount Type 2 all provide for a simple ‘set and forget’ installation.

A most popular general-purpose compression load cell. PT’s unique design means that the whole upper section is turned in a continuous process leaving the cell with an impervious upper section.

All electronics components are housed through the bottom of the load cell, which is then, protected to IP67. Further mechanical protection results simply by bolting to a flat surface.

Suitable for tank, hopper, silo work and all industrial weighing projects, the LPX is finished in a corrosion resistant electroless nickel plate, perfect for hostile environments.

The LPX is available in 11 different capacities from 25kg to 50t.

A true mini disk at 22mm high in the 25kg model and only 55mm in the 50t model.

Supplied with quality 4 and 6 core cable (depending on capacity), the LPX when fitted to our purpose designed LPXR restraining mount kits, is the ultimate ‘set and forget’ load cell weighing system.

A direct bolt replacement for most industry standard single point cells.

The PT1000 is a dual designed model providing for increased capacities.

The smaller cell is from 3kg to 35kg and at only 22mm high and 130mm long it’s perfect for small low cost retail scales, medical and check weighing applications with platforms up to 350mm x 350mm.

The larger size cell measures from 50kg to 250kg capacity and is ideal for platform sizes 400mm x 500mm.

This is a very compact cell for its capacity range.

Being industry standard in size it replaces many older less accurate shearbeams, which have much lower environmental protection. 6 metric capacities from 250kg to 5t and 6 imperial capacities from 500lb to 10klb allows the professional scale manufacturer to standardise their whole platform scale offering using one single model, reducing spares holdings and increasing brand awareness.

Innovative Measurement Electronics

LOAD CELL MATERIALSA range of materials are used in the construction of load cells. The materials are chosen to exploit specific characteristics desirable for the model in question.

Aluminium used by PT is aerospace grade and marine anodized. Aluminium is chosen for lower capacity volume models such as the single points PT1000, PT2000, PT3000 and economy models ASB and AST. Aluminium is chosen here for its lower modulus of elasticity (more signal for a given load and dimensions) and for its ease of machining. The resistance to overload of the aluminium models is not as great as that of the tool steel or stainless steel models.

Anodizing is a process that produces a hard inert layer of aluminium oxide on the surface of the load cell for protection. The marine grade used is durable and proven over many years of exposure to harsh conditions

Tool Steel is used in the bulk of industrial applications. Tool steel is used due to its excellent elastic properties, consistancy, toughness and durability at an optimal cost. Tool steel is hardened and tempered to obtain desired properties and protected with electroless nickel plating.

Electroless Nickel Plating has been almost universally adopted as a protection system for tool steel load cells. Electroless Nickel Plating produces a hard durable corrosion resistant coating on the base steel without introducing the embrittlement problems that can arise from electroplating. Items to be coated in Electroless Nickel are prepared and placed in a bath of Nickel solution. There is a chemical reaction between the surface of the load cells and the solution that results in deposition of Nickel, a sort of self-plating action. The nickel layer produced is not subject to the problems associated with electroplating such as failure to coat adequately in holes, pockets and recesses and excess plating on corners and sharp edges. As long as fresh solution is circulated through recesses the Nickel is deposited. The process is self-activating and does not require an electrical current which can induce hydrogen into the tool steel sufficient to cause embrittlement. Electroplated tool steel requires solution treatment at elevated temperatures immediately after plating.

Electroless Nickel has physical advantages as a coating. Nickel is very corrosion resistant, the coatings are typically rated at over 1000 hours salt spray even only 10 microns thick and being thin the coatings do not alter fits and tolerances appreciably. Nickel is hard, Electrolessly deposited Nickel typically has a hardness of 56 Rockwell C, and this makes the coating very durable and abrasion resistant. The protective layer will not easily wear off. Nickel is also relatively inert and resistant to many chemicals. It will not dissolve in light acids as zinc can do. Nickel weathers well and retains a shiny surface that hinders buildup and facilitates cleaning. Nickel plating provides a barrier coating to protect the load cell. Sacrificial coatings such as zinc protect the steel by sacrificing the coating, by eroding away until there is no coating left. This is the reason a thick coating of hot dipped galvanizing is considered durable enough for outside exposure and electroplated zinc is not. Other forms of corrosion protection are available for tool steel but these have provisos on their use and limitations of performance. PT has used some of these in special circumstances where Nickel has not been suitable. For fertilizer applications where damp conditions has caused phosphate caking, PT have used a sand blast, epoxy zinc and epoxy tar coating system as used in pen stocks and marine environments. Hot dip galvanizing would be a favorable coating for corrosion as it is may be 250 microns thick with zinc. Unfortunately such thick layers of soft zinc would affect performance of some sensitive load cells and the temperatures of hot dipping would not be favorable.

Zinc plating has been used but not by PT. It is suitable as a primer for mild steel mounts where hydrogen embrittlement is less likely and where it will be coated with paint or powder coating. PT do not consider zinc electro plating suitable for an industrial environment, even if immediate heat treating is used to prevent hydrogen embrittlement, as it is not durable enough or resistant enough to chemicals and the environment.

Stainless Steel is the premium material for load cell construction. Stainless steel offers corrosion resistance and with welded sealing generally employed offers load cells with the highest degree of environmental protection. Stainless steel is more difficult to machine and less easily heat treated to obtain precision load cells but these factors are more than offset where conditions are less than desirable.

Polyethelene is used for load cell cable wire insulation due to its superior moisture resistance and insulating properties.

PVC is used as a sheathing in general load cell cable situations. PVC is durable for most applications where flexing does not occur in very cold conditions.

Polyurethane sheathed cables are used in the most demanding conditions. Polyurethane functions well at reduced temperatures, is flexible, abrasion resistant and offers good chemical resistance.

SEALINGThe IP (International Protection) code is frequently used to specify the degree of sealing for an apparatus but often is not well understood. The code has been adopted in many countries, in various national standards, but in most cases stems from IEC 529: Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures (IP Code).

PT use the IP code to specify the degree of sealing for the load cells that they manufacture. Most are IP67 or IP68, but some are IP65 and this discussion will be limited to these degrees of protection. The standards generally start with a scope, object and definitions, followed by an explanation of the code characteristic numerals and tests for each degree of protection.

The object of the standard is:• definitions for degrees of protection provided by enclosures of electrical equipment as regards,• protection of persons against access to hazardous parts,• protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against ingress of solid objects,• protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against harmful effects due to water ingress,• designations for these degrees,• requirements for each designations,• tests to verify that the enclosure meets the requirements.

It is noted that measures to protect both the enclosure and the internal equipment against external influences or conditions such as;

• mechanical impacts • corrosion • corrosive solvents • fungus• vermin • solar radiation • icing•moisture (e.g. produced by condensation)• explosive atmospheres

and the protection against hazardous moving parts external to the enclosure are matters for the relevant product standard. They are not a part of the IP standard.

The designation of the code as used by PT are for the letters IP , the first numeral 6 and the second numeral 5, 7 or 8. The additional optional and optional supplementary letters are not used.

IP6XThe first numeral 6 indicates that the enclosure is dust tight and protects against access to hazardous parts with a wire. No dust ingress is allowed and an access probe of diameter 1 mm shall not penetrate the enclosure (the equipment and exact method of performing these tests is defined).

IPX5Second numeral 5 is protection against water jets. Water is projected against the enclosure from any direction, tests being performed to project the stream of water from all practicable directions. The jet exits from a 6.3mm nozzle with a flow of 12.5 l/min. (equating to a nozzle velocity of 6.7m/s). The core of the substantial stream should be a circle of approximately 40mm diameter at 2.5m.The test duration is1 minute per square metre of enclosure, with a minimum of 3 minutes and the enclosure should be a distance of 2.5 to 3m from the nozzle during the test.

IPX6Second numeral 6 is protection against powerful water jets. Water is projected against the enclosure from any direction, tests being performed to project the stream of water from all practicable directions. The jet exits from a 6.3mm nozzle with a flow of 100 l/min. (equivalent to a nozzle velocity of 13.5m/s). The core of the substantial stream should be a circle of approximately 120mm diameter at 2.5m. The test duration is1 minute per square metre of enclosure, with a minimum of 3 minutes and the enclosure should be a distance of 2.5 to 3m from the nozzle during the test.

IPX7Second numeral 7 is protection against the effects of temporary immersion. The enclosure is immersed in fresh water such that the lowest point of an enclosure with a height less that 850mm is located 1m below the surface and the highest point of a enclosure with height equal to or greater than 850mm is located 150mm below the surface. The test duration is a minimum of 30 minutes and the water temperature must not differ from the enclosure temperature by more than 5°K.

IPX8Second numeral 8 is protection against the effects of continuous immersion. The enclosure is continuously immersed in fresh water under conditions agreed between manufacturer and user but which are more severe than for numeral 7 and shall take into consideration that the enclosure will be continuously immersed in actual use. PT specify an immersion depth of 1.5m and an immersion time of 300 hours for second numeral 8.

Notes to the second numeral indicate that it indicates protection against the harmful effects of the ingress of water and that the tests for the second characteristic numeral are performed with fresh water, the actual protection may not be satisfactory if cleaning operations with high pressure and/or solvents are used. Up to and including second numeral 6 the designation implies compliance with any one of the lower numerals. An enclosure with second numeral 7 or 8 only is considered unsuitable for exposure to water jets (second numeral 5 or 6) and need not comply with those requirements unless it is dual coded ( i.e. IP65/IP68).

This implies that the IP rating does not apply when wash down solutions (anything other than fresh water) are used or if wash down is performed with a water blaster or high pressure hose. Enclosures that can be immersed (7,8) cannot necessarily be hosed directly (5,6).

Acceptance conditions for the tests are such that if any water has entered, it shall not;• be sufficient to interfere with correct operation or impair safety,• deposit on insulation parts where it may lead to tracking,• reach live parts not designed to operate when wet,• accumulate near the cable end or enter the cable if any.

Of special note is the reference to protection against fresh water only, no chemicals or high pressure water jets. Where chemicals are present or high pressure jets are used it is often possible to protect the load cell to prevent contact. Where there is concern about the possibility of use outside the IP standard please contact your nearest PT representative or contact PT directly.

SAFETYBe sure to calculate and specify the dimensions of all mounting and structural elements to accommodate sufficient overload capacity for the design loads. For upright vessels in particular take into consideration overturning due to winds, earthquake or unforeseen impacts. Satisfy life requirements when there is vibration and cyclical loading, in regards to both the load cell and mountings. If vibration is high or fatigue is a consideration it is better to err on the cautious side of design parameters.

Corrosion can reduce the strength of load cells, fixtures and support structures. As for all high strength steels, fixings and load cells are subject to a form of strength reduction due to corrosion. Stainless steels can corrode when oxygen can not form a protective oxide layer as in the crevice between bolted surfaces or when it is in contact with other metals, even ordinary steel.

In the event that an environmental or loading condition has not been fully anticipated or routine maintenance has not ensured integrity there could be a sudden failure of load support (load cell or mounting) that could pose a threat to health and/or safety. Diligent design should consider the event of load cell fracture and determine if in this event integral or additional safety devices are a necessity. Do not use the load cell and fittings as a fail safe device.

INSTALLATIONFor best accuracy in multiple load cell installations the load should be equalized so that each load cell carries a similar load. The load should vary its distribution as little as possible and the load cells should be sized to carry the highest expected uneven load. Off axis loads can reduce accuracy and should be minimized. The load cell mounting surface should be clean and flat. Bolt sizing, strength and tightening are critical to the mounting of the load cells. Any departure from specification must be carefully considered.

Care is required when tightening fittings in the loading end of the load cell. Precautions should be taken not to damage the load cell by application of torque.Welding in the vicinity of the load cell can cause damage. Do not allow welding currents to pass through the load cell, disconnect the load cell cable when welding.

WIRINGPT load cells are manufactured with either 4 core cables or 6 core cables. Compensation for temperature characteristics of 4 core cables is built into the load cell and altering the length of these cables reduces accuracy. 6 core cables sense the voltage at the load cell and may be cut or extended without affecting accuracy. If installing a 6 core cable in a 4 core installation connect Sense +ve to Excitation +ve and Sense -ve to Excitation -ve to minimize errors.
