We are pleased to report on an exciting and transformative year at the Lloyd Center

for the Environment.

In 2015, the Lloyd Center announced its first-ever capital campaign, Transforming

a Legacy. The three million dollar campaign will enable the Center to expand its

education, research, and outreach programs and provide space for public programs

in collaboration with its organizational partners.

The Center’s facility transformation will take place in a three-phase process and

has been designed to ultimately deliver Lloyd Center programs within a “living

classroom,” where buildings blend into the ecology of the preserve where they exist

and compliment the excellent programs the Center offers.

The campaign is necessary to support the mission of the Lloyd Center and ensure

the future of our program-providing departments. In 2015, the Research Department

worked to monitor threatened and endangered species throughout the Commonwealth

and many of the New England states. The Education Department provided programs

to over 12,000 students from 50 different public and private schools across Massa-

chusetts and Rhode Island. The Outreach Department engaged with almost 3,000

community members through programs and events. Our member-supported Dartmouth,

Massachusetts Visitor Center/82-acre preserve attracted over 25,000 visitors.

Thank you for your generous support, which makes all this possible.

Our organization has grown into a regional center for excellence due to the reputation

of our programs and the tireless work of our staff and board. We are extraordinarily

grateful to the committed staff, talented board of directors, volunteers, and donors

who make all this possible.

The past third of a century has seen the Lloyd Center grow from a small environmental

“studies” organization to a dynamic membership-supported institution, whose

research, education and outreach services are increasingly sought by educators,

government agencies and citizens throughout New England.

Founded in 1978 and situated with its headquarters and spectacular nature preserve

overlooking the scenic Slocum River estuary in Dartmouth, the Lloyd Center

has achieved a well-earned reputation for excellence in environmental research,

education, and outreach. Through its innovative outreach programs, it has established

itself as a highly regarded leader in the ongoing effort to raise awareness of the area’s

fragile coastal resources and the importance of protecting them.

At its 82-acre nature preserve, comprising pristine salt marsh, maritime forest and

undisturbed wetlands, in one of the most unspoiled reaches of southeastern New

England, the Visitor Center is open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday through Saturday

(plus Sundays, June-September). Here, aquarium exhibits offer close-up views of

live freshwater and saltwater species of fish and other marine organisms. The Visitor

Center is also home to a fascinating collection of live local reptiles. At the always-

popular touch-tank, youngsters learn the hands-on joy of socializing with gentle

spider crabs, elusive minnows, sea stars, whelks, hermit crabs, periwinkles and

mussels.

Our majestic Red-shouldered Hawk continues to be our main “Raptor-in-Residence”.

Discovered permanently disabled in nearby woods, she was rescued by Lloyd Center

naturalists and nursed back to health. Although not here as an “exhibit”, this magnifi-

cent bird of prey, having been painstakingly “socialized” by members of our teaching

staff, is now being introduced to thousands of wide-eyed children, both in their class-

rooms and here at our nature preserve. To these eager learners, it has come to represent

one of the true wonders of nature.

In March of 2013, the Center received its very own Eastern Screech Owl which is

no less wild, but partially impaired due to a retinal detachment in its left eye. The

resident raptors serve as educational tools for the biodiversity concept, which stresses

the interconnectedness and importance of all species around us, both large and small.

The top-floor Osprey Room Observatory, with its magnificent views of the Elizabeth

Islands and Buzzards Bay, has been designated by the Massachusetts Executive Office

of Environmental Affairs as one of the Commonwealth’s top-fifteen “Special Places”.

Through telescopes there, one can get a bird’s-eye view of formerly endangered

Ospreys, and their fledging chicks, nesting on platforms erected by members of the

Center’s research staff. Trails are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

Since its founding, the Lloyd Center has focused its research activities on assessing

and documenting the distribution and ecology of the natural resources of southeastern

New England. The two biggest Lepidoptera projects involved the State’s only endemic

moth, the water-willow borer (Papaipema sulphurata), which is protected by the MA

Endangered Species Act. The Center developed a baseline protocol to protect the spe-

cies during the salt marsh restoration of the Herring River in Wellfleet, and resurveyed

over 50 sites throughout southeastern Massachusetts in order to document populations

that were still extant and therefore continued to be protected under the Act. Collabo-

rating with Tufts University, the Lloyd Center completed its 14th year as the Buzzards

Bay coordinator of the Seabird Stranding Network, documenting instances of seabird

mortality and live-bird activity on the western shoreline of Buzzards Bay. Lloyd

Center scientists conducted rare-species habitat assessments in Middlesex County,

Martha’s Vineyard, and Cape Cod. The Center also gathered baseline data for its

Biodiversity Initiative, documenting the biota of southeastern Massachusetts.

The Center continued its collaboration with Martha’s Vineyard conservation agencies

and produced rare-habitat assessments for a growing number of private landowners.

In addition to its continuing work in protecting Piping Plovers and state-threatened

species, including Diamondback Terrapins on the Commonwealth’s Division of

Conservation and Recreation beaches in Bristol County, the Center completed its 30th

year of monitoring and protecting the federally-listed (“threatened”) Piping Plovers.

Research staff also participated in Bioblitzes in Rhode Island, as well as the Rhode

Island East Bay and the Massachusetts Bristol County North American Butterfly

Association’s Fourth of July Butterfly Counts.

The Lloyd Center continues to provide and increasing number of unique hands-on

science programs for schoolchildren and adolescents in over 20 different New

England cities and towns, at levels ranging from kindergarten through college. This

past year, the Lloyd Center worked with almost 50 schools in the region, visiting a

growing number of students on a regular basis to teach interactive lessons on relevant

and critically important environmental issues.

Three of the curriculum-based offerings, Feathery Focus (an ornithology program

specially created for the third-grade level) and Turn-the-Tide (a program dealing with

the ecosystems of local estuaries, taught on the fifth-grade level), as well as the new

Climate Science Learning Project, have proven to be especially effective. All educa-

tion programs are designed to meet the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks in

Science and Technology/Engineering and in History/Social Studies.

For children ages 5-15, the Center’s Education Department annually provides up to

15 distinct summer programs designed to help students develop a better understand-

ing of science and a deeper appreciation for the need to protect the fragile nature of

our coast. Every year, as many as 13,000 students benefit from the participation in

Lloyd Center education programs.

The Lloyd Center offers a wide variety of programs designed to engage the minds of

southeastern New England citizens of all ages, expanding their understanding of the

fragile nature of our coastal environment and the importance of working together to

protect it.

This past year Lloyd Center Outreach staff interacted with almost 3,000 people at

various community outreach events as well as popular Lloyd Center Programs such as

canoe tours, kayak trips, birthday parties, nature walks, shore-birding expeditions, seal

and whale watches, midnight “owl prowls”, butterfly and moth identification work-

shops, and at our own community outreach events, Family Fun Day and the annual fall

rowing and paddling Regatta.

Over five miles of rustic hiking trails, open to the public every day from dawn to dusk

on the Lloyd Center’s Hardscrabble Nature Preserve, and a broad variety of live marine

animal exhibits, complemented by programs and seminars, continue to draw a growing

number of citizens of all ages to our Visitor Center. In addition, outreach collaboration

with partnering organizations continues to prove exceptionally effective in promoting

lifestyle changes aimed at a more sustainable use of natural resources. The Center’s

unique website provides a vast amount of environmental research and education

information for those who seek it electronically.

THE ART DRIVEOn the weekend of August 8th and 9th, tourists and art enthusiasts meandered through 15 scenic miles for the ART Drive, where 32 Dartmouth and Westport, Massachusetts artists welcomed them for the eighth open studio weekend.

“We are incredibly honored that the talented ART Drive artists chose the Lloyd Center for their generous donation,” said Rachel Stronach, Executive Director at the Lloyd Center. “Their support is key to our ability to provide high-quality research, education and outreach programs for our local community and beyond.”

Artists opening their unique studios each year include the area’s premier painters, ceramic artists, photographers, jewelers and woodworkers.

The ART Drive also featured a group of high school and college students as part of the ART Drive’s “Rising Stars” exhibit. The Rising Stars exhibit provides the opportu-nity for local students to display and sell their work to an audience of art lovers and collectors.

‘Bodacious Bonitos’ Following the past five years of enthusiastically received large-scaled artistic renditions of the Winter Flounder, Classic Cod, Yellow Fin Tuna, Striped Bass and Blue Fish, this year’s artists will apply their unique talents to new, colorful and imaginative depic-tions of the Bonito, another species well-known throughout New Eng-land. The Bonitos were auctioned on eBay with proceeds going to the artists, artist donations to the Lloyd Center for the Environment, and the Art Drive.

TRANSFORMING A LEGACY

A few years ago, the Lloyd Center Board of Directors and Staff conducted extensive

studies to determine necessary improvements to support the programs that serve

our broad constituency. The conclusions were that the investment of $1.5 Million

in facilities and $1.5 Million in program support, garnered from a diverse group of

contributors, would underwrite the defined facilities and operational priority goals

and secure the Center’s infrastructure and capital foundation for the future. The Lloyd

Center’s first-ever capital campaign, Transforming a Legacy, was launched in 2015

with generous support from the Lloyd Family, the Board of Directors, leadership

donors and four foundations.

Bolstered by this generosity and confidence in the quality work of the Center, we

were able to move forward on all of the campaign initiatives in 2015:

• Construction of the Teaching Pavilion on the Slocums River is scheduled and

bidding is in process for the planned bus drop-off, parking and roadway improve-

ments;

• The LBC-certified, 105% energy-regenerating Welcome Center has been registered

with the International Living Future Institute™ (http://living-future.org), the building

and its location designed, key Dartmouth Town Boards consulted and the Design

Development for preliminary pricing prepared;

• Architectural drawings for the expansion and renovation of the main building, the

Exploration Center, have been completed with considerable staff involvement;

• As the facilities bids are received, they have been reviewed by our knowledgeable

Building Committee. As well as the construction of the Teaching Pavilion on the

Slocums River, we anticipate “breaking ground” on the roadway and site work

and the Welcome Center in the spring and summer of 2016;

• Program support and the closely-monitored income and expense goals of the first

year of the Five-Year Financial Plan have been achieved.

A diversity of global environmental issues exist today which will challenge us and

generations to come. Through its excellent, experiential environmental education pro-

grams and research, the Lloyd Center is informing thousands of children and adults

annually. We recognize that we have undertaken our campaign in a philanthropic

arena crowded with the financial needs of many important regional, national and

even international organizations. Our thanks to all of our Transforming a Legacy

leadership donors for their generosity and belief in the Center and its important work.

With $1.7 million raised through 2015, the Campaign Steering Committee looks

forward to continuing to reach out to our extended community whose support

sustains our ability to foster knowledgeable citizens locally and globally with the

information and expertise to make informed decisions today and in the future.

Throughout her life, Karen Gallup Lloyd had many avid interests and one grand

vision. She was a classical pianist, photographer, hunter, pilot of single engine

and glider aircraft, student of yoga, patron of the arts, and practitioner of Christian

Science. Karen traveled the world over—Iceland, Europe, the Middle East, South

America, Australia, Africa—and her linguistic skills were so advanced that one

Parisian assumed she was a native of Calais! In British Columbia, Karen posed

with the elk she had just downed with her 30-06 rifle. Her main passion was to

enjoy nature and observe animal life, which included a Safari she undertook in

Africa with noted primatologist, Jane Goodall.

But it was the south coast of Massachusetts, where her family had summered, that

captured her heart and imagination and set the direction for her life’s work. After

the death of her husband, she donated the home they had built in Chaypee Woods,

thereby founding the Lloyd Center for the Environment as a living memorial to her

mother. The center has been serving the public and south coast school systems since

it opened in 1981.

The Lloyd Center has been shepherded by six exemplary Executive Directors; and

in that tradition, the current Director, Rachel Stronach, is guiding the Center through

one of its most historic endeavors to date: the Transforming a Legacy capital

campaign.

The center hopes to raise three million dollars, half of which has already been

pledged by the Lloyd family, along with the board of directors and committee

members, in order to fund learning programs and make substantial improvements to

the roadway and existing facilities, including the construction of an outdoor pavilion

and new welcome center.

There is a bench at the Lloyd Center near the memorial stone for Karen Lloyd, with

a view that peeks through a copse of trees to the 224-acre Demarest Lloyd State Park

beyond, which she, along with her mother and late sister, Angelica Lloyd Russell,

donated to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1953. It is an ideal setting to sit

and meditate with Karen.

When it came time for Mitchell Spell to choose an Eagle Scout project, he called the

Lloyd Center for the Environment. A former student in the Center’s summer programs,

he knew the Center may be the perfect place to complete his project.

The Center’s stairs heading down towards the Estuary were worn and needed to be

replaced. In addition, steps needed to be put in a trail that lead to the Bond House.

The perfect project for Mitchell to lead. With help from his Eagle Scout Troup, family

and friends, he had his workforce ready to go. He was able to get donations from

local companies and individuals, covering 90% of the costs of the project.

With lots of volunteers, the actual onsite project took only two full days to complete.
