there's no denying that they re becomingincreasingly fashionable, as even thosepeople sti l l unconvinced by the evidence ofc l imate change are a larmed i r to act ion bytheir ever-increasing fuel bil ls.

This month, the residents of Cambridgewill have the chance to explore the realit iesof eco l iving and get inspired thanks toCambridge Carbon Footprint's Open EcoHomes project. Now in its f ifth year, OpenEco Homes (OEH) is a free communityevent aimed at providing first-handinformation about energy-efficient homes. On 14 and 20 September, 18 homes wil lopen their doors to the public.

The majority are older properties whichhave been retrofitted with pioneeringgreen technology, l ike the four-storey,multi-occupancy Victorian house onHunt ingdon Road that has cut fuel b i l ls

A N t n I t / - t r - r t N I / ^At \L - i L tU-1 I i l \ t rGone are the days when eco furnituremeant compromising on style: today everydesigner worthy of the name is reusing,renewing and recycling. Rapidly risingstar Sebastian Cox (02083 165679; www.sebastiancox.co.uk), for example, createshis beaut i fu l ly s imple, t imeless p iecesfrom coppiced hazel and other Brit ishhardwoods. "l make well crafted, visuallyl ightweight furniture that you can live withfor many years," Cox says.

"Sustainabil ity is not just about materials,it 's about consuming less." His latestcollection is a highly textured chestnut andash range for Brit ish brand Benchmark(Lath Bench, f690; Lath Chair f390; ShakeCabinet €2,800 from Benchmark, 01488608020; www.benchmarkfu rniture.com).

Cutting down the amount we consumeis the motivation behind the boominginterest in upcycling - the art of giving oldand discarded pieces a new lease of l i fe.Cambridge cafe The Urban Shed, with itstables made from wooden cable spools

and hessian coffee bean sack curtains,is a bri l l iant example of what can beachieved with a bit of imagination (01223324888, www.theu rbanshed.com), andskil l of course. Anyone with two leftthumbs is probably better off buying analready reimagined piece such as one ofZoe Murphy's re-veneered and gloriouslypainted cabinets (07780 57 4314, www.zoemurphy.com). Alternatively, Stud ioMama's Nina Tolstrup has published themaking instructions for her witty andingenious pal le t f loor l ight and chai rs(www.studiomama.com).

Low-energy l ighting has come a longway since the days of slow, faint eco bulbs.LEDs, which are l it by electrons movingabout in a semi-conductor, are the mostefficient l ights on the market, using a tenthof the electricity of a halogen bulb. Onlinelighting store www.letslighting.com sellsa huge range of CE approved LED lights, ranging from the purely functional to theseriously showstopping such as the Marilynchandelier pictured to the left.

"The use of LED lighting is nothing butbeneficial to the consumer," says companydirector Benjamin Davis. "You may paya litt le more in the flrst place, but in thelong term, they help to reduce uti l i ty costsand because they offer such flexibil i ty ofcolour, they are bri l l iant aesthetically too,"Davis also suggests that LEDs may havepotential health benefits.

"LED l ights can assis t in prov id ing anopt imum amount of l ight at the r ightcolour temperatures throughout the day toassist in the production of hormones whichcontrol the biological clock," he says.

Cambridgeshire already has an impressivereputation as a green region (according todata from the Deoartment of Energy andClimate Change, the county is believed tohave more solar panels than anywhere elsein the UK) and it is about to be enhancedfurther by renewable energy specialistsCernunnos at The Barn at Top Farm.

Cernunnos, which is a sponsor ofCambr idge Open Eco Homes 2014, wasfounded by brothers Peter and AndyMcKeown in 2011 but this is their f irstfull-scale showroom. "The idea is to showthe technology in action," says PeterMcKeown, "Most of our c l ients l ive in o ld,rural houses so by moving our showroominto something s imi la l we are able to showexactly what can be done," The Barn atTop Farm boasts a full range of renewabletechnologies inc luding solar panels andlighting, biomass systems, heat pumps, smart radiators and thermostats,

Cernunnos has also looked at itswaste management and, inspired bythe upcycling the brothers saw at TheUrban Shed, decided to try and reuse thewooden pallets their stock was deliveredon. "We have made them into kitchens andchopped them up to sell as kindling," saysPeter. "This showroom is all about inspiringpeople to find ways to l ive on less."

Local company Kloeber worked withtheir clients on this impressrve ecoproject rn Brittany which had veryspecific objectives. The plan was to builda fully sustainable eco home which waslight, open and invited easy movementthroughout the house.

Kloebers Eurofold timber foldingsliding doors were an ideal solution, ticking many boxes of the client's ecorequirements. All Kloeber's t imberproducts are FSC certif ied and haveexcellent U-value ratings with optionsof both double and t r ip le g laz ing wi th

Argon or Krypton gas. The folding doorsallow the whole front of the house to becompletely opened to the south terrace, enabling a seamless l iving space in thesummer months.

Kloeber's t imber Eurofold doors start ataround f2000 plus VAT (excluding deliveryand fitt ing).

For further details on Kloeber's fullglazing range of set size or bespokebifold doors in timber or aluminiumand complimentary glazing in timbetaluminium or composite, contact 014877 40O 44, www.kloeber.co.uk.

The showroom opens to the publicon 26 September and, in par tnershipwi th Cambr idge Carbon Footpr int , wi l lbe hosting a follow-up workshop on15 October about how to make seriousenergy-efficient savings.
