Welcome

A reality check. I was just finishingNews & Views this month checkingback through emails to make sure Ihadn’t missed anything (notinfallible, as many know), whensomething stopped me in my tracks. Itwas an email from Phil & MargaretHughes sent at the end of May. Onewhich I had made a mental note toput in the next edition at the time. And one which I had omitted lastmonth. It’s here in full and just putsthings in perspective for us all. Withthe excitement of the Olympics andother events, it’s easy to forget thatthere are men and women still out inAfghanistan risking their lives on adaily basis, and also families andfriends constantly fretting for their

well-being. It certainly made me stopand think. With apologies to Philip &Margaret for not including this in thelast issue.

Summer has arrived although it will still godown as one of the wettest on record.Sadly this has not stopped the criminalfraternity and we have had a number ofbreak-ins in the area. Once again we needto be good neighbours and reportanything that looks suspicious to the NorthWales Police. With this in mind NorthWales Police have recently launched a newon line watch link call OWL. By registeringyour name, location and e- mail address youwill receive relevant crime alerts and timelycrime prevention advice. I have asked for athousand of these leaflets and over thenext two months I will drop one througheach door in the area.

Are you in receipt of a state pension, liableto pay council tax in Denbighshire and yourhome in Denbighshire is your mainresidence? If you have answered yes to allthree questions you may be entitled to ashare of a grant received by Denbighshirefrom the Welsh Government to help reducepensioners council tax bills.Denbighshire has received £148,209 andthis will be divided equally between allthose who register an interest byNovember 1st this year.

To register you should write to: ThePensioner Grant Scheme, Revenues Dept,Russell House, Churton Road, Rhyl,Denbighshire LL18 3DP quoting your statepension reference number, your addressincluding post code and your council taxreference number.

Central Government gave all EnglishCounties enough money to freeze counciltax for all tax payers this year and similarfunding was given to the Welsh

Governmentbut theydecided notto pass it on.It appearsthat this maybepart of thatfunding andsadly it also appears that it may be moreof a lottery in Wales as to wether or notyou receive any money. It is thereforeimportant that you register early.

There have been a number of complaintsabout the bus service in Maeshafn frombus users outside the village. Thecomplaints revolve around the problemsthe buses have in turning around in thevillage. I feel that this is also an issue aboutthe limited parking in the village forvisitors and residents alike. In earlySeptember it is my intention to completea survey in the village to listen to the viewsof all concerned and to look for possiblesolutions. I hope that everyone will takepart and I am looking forward to yoursuggestions on how we can improve theposition for all.

Best wishes.Martyn

THE NATIONAL EISTEDDFODDENBIGH 2013

The National Eisteddfod fund raising committee have asked LlanferresCommunity Council to pledge £2,000 towards next year's event in Denbigh.

It was decided that we would like to support them, but the amount wasthought to be excessive and could not just be paid out of Public money.

Four members of the Council have therefore joined with some otherinterested people to form a "Working Party" to try to raise some funds forthem. We need more help and would very much like to hear from anyone

living in the Community of Llanferres who is willing to help.

On a sunny morning in late June Iwas walking from Llanferres toLoggerheads Garage when I wasstruck by the beauty and diversity ofthe plant life encountered on thisshort walk. I did not do an intensivesurvey of all the plants, but passedalong at a normal walking pace, yet Icounted 18 woody plants or trees, ofwhich 5 were in bloom, 6 species ofgrass and no less than 60 floweringplants (although not all were actuallyin bloom) and all on the one side ofthe road (the left-hand side, goingtowards Loggerheads). I did not usethe old road through Tafarn y Gelynbut walked along the pavement untilI came to the new road where I usedthe gravel edge before again resortingto the pavement to take me the rest ofthe way to Loggerheads. On leaving Llanferres, I admired thegardens splendid with the plants ofcultivation, sometimes complementedby wild flowers, but I did not includethese in my count but only started tocount when I became aware of thediversity of wild flowers growing onthe verge. Many of them veryfamiliar such as Hogweed, Daisy,Dandelion and Cow parsley but let usnot dismiss them as they all add tothe picture. I quickly noticed pinkDovesfoot cranesbill, yellow Creepingbuttercup, blue Forget-me-not, lilacTufted vetch and the burgundycoloured Common vetch.Honeysuckle climbed and entwinedon Holly and Elder, the latter in fullbloom.Meadow buttercup and Tufted vetchcrowded together to make a colourfulscene that would enhance or competewith any cultivated garden. Therewere Wild cherry trees, no longer inflower and their fruits already taken

by the birds. The yellow flowers ofBirdsfoot trefoil caught my eye. Thisis the food plant for the caterpillars ofseveral butterflies and its seed heads, when ripe, resemble the claw of abird, hence the name. Red campion,Crosswort and Meadow sweet werehere with a patch of Nettle. Manypeople regard nettles as a pest, and sothey are in the wrong place such as adecorative garden, but in the wildthey are valuable food sources for thecaterpillars of some of our mostcolourful butterflies and through thecenturies they have been harvestedby man for a variety of uses. Rosebaywillowherb flourishes and, in season,is very colourful and is the food forElephant hawk moths but is reviledby gardeners because of its plethoraof fluffy seeds which blow everywhere. In the brook I spotted Brooklime andWatercresss. Near the gate and stile, the pearly white flowers of Guelderrose shone brightly in the sunshine. Not a rose, of course, but a relative ofcultivated Viburnums. I passed moreBirdsfoot trefoil with red and whiteClover, all capable of extractingnitrogen from the air and 'fixing' it inthe soil to the benefit of other plants, such as the profusion of Ox-eyedaisies. A Laburnum tree hung heavywith racemes of yellow flowers and aHorse chestnut was displaying itsminiature 'conkers'. Regarded as anative species this tree was onlyintroduced into Britain about 350years ago. All about were Knapweed,Yellow rattle, Meadow vetchling andbright blue Germander speedwell.Yarrow, which is usually whiteflowered, had some heads of pink - asfar as I know the only umbellifer to dothis. Marking the road edge wasyellow flowered Black medick, or

Nature Notesshould I say Shamrock? For this isthe plant it is believed that St Patrickplucked to illustrate the doctrine of'three persons in one God'.Up the slope was a collection of trees- Hazel, Oak, Sycamore, Field maple, wild rose and others, fronted by arange of grasses including Meadowgrass, Yorkshire fog, Cocksfoot, Ryegrass and Timothy amongst whichgrew Ragwort (Cinnabar moth foodplant), Spear thistle, Sorrel, Yarrow,Perennial sow thistle and the nowfaded flowers of Cowslips. Many ofthe trees were encrusted with yellowcrustose lichens which impart colourto these trees in the winter. PassingTafarn y Gelyn I regained thepavement to see a big patch ofButterbur whose large leaves whereonce used to wrap 'pats' of butter tokeep them fresh. There was a standof Welted thistle - not everybody'sfavourite but a good source of nectarand pollen for many insects. Iwondered why so many people regardall insects as pests to be destroyed, when the vast majority of insects areuseful to humans. Have we got so faraway from reality that we are soignorant of life and the naturalworld?Another Willowherb grows along here- the Great willowherb - differingfrom the Rosebay in having deeperpink flowers and downy undersides tothe leaves. There was Garlicmustard, Figwort, Herb Bennet(related to the garden Geum), Dog'smercury, Greater Celandine andWelsh poppy. I passed under two fineSycamores and a Wych elm tree andhere (between the pavement and theroad) the grasses were floweringmagnificently. But soon the Councilwill come along and mow them all

down. Why? They are doing noharm! We live in the country forgoodness sake not some municipalpark where everything has to becontrolled. Why cannot we enjoythem? People say it is 'only' grass yetgrasses, and their derivatives, areprobably the most important phylumin the world, without which we couldnot survive. Ground elder growshere. Hated by gardeners, with goodreason, in the wild it tends to be keptin check by competition with theother plants and its whiteumbelliferous flowers provide pollenand nectar. To the untutored eye all the whiteumbels look the same yet, on thiswalk, I had seen six species, althoughI may not have named them all. Theytend to flower in succession, perhapsgiving the impression that one speciesdominates the roadside vergesthroughout the growing season.Sometimes they are not easy toidentify and one has to rely on theseed capsules to separate them. And finally, I came to the houses justprior to the Loggerheads Garagewhere I noticed a Lilac tree, someSolomon's seal and, clinging to cracksin the wall, Shining cranesbill andIvy-leaved toadflax.Although I have not mentioned all ofthem by name, all told, I had seen atleast 84 species of plant and, undoubtedly, I had missed manymore and these were only the onesapparent on this particular day. There will be others which showthemselves at other times of the year,so who can guess just exactly howmany there actually are. And all onone side of about a mile of a trunkroad.
