Also, remembering those from the areawho gave their lives in the Great War,Noel Headley has completed his first ina series of fascinating articles - see page20.

As we go to print it’s forecast to be anice weekend - so it’s a perfectopportunity to get in the garden andplant those flowers and veggies for theGarden Show - details of which are withthis magazine.

On Monday May 13th, a party of 16 Club members went to Walton FuchsiaNursery in Lymm. This trip was booked in September of last year and thewinter weather had created great problems for owners Roy and LesleyWalton, for they had lost so many stock plants.

A wander round two thirds of an acre of a commercial greenhouse broughthome to us the size of the problem compared to our small home greenhouses. But their hard work and dedication had provided a wide range of their normal1,600 varieties for us to buy. Roy answered many queries about growingfuchsias - feed, compost and varieties. After refreshments of tea and cake, kindly provided by our hosts, a quick 45 minute trip brought us home.Perhaps this was a reality trip to a commercial grower's nursery, compared toa manicured garden centre for plants.

Our next meeting, which will be on Monday June 10th, should have been atalk by Carol Madden but unfortunately Carol is unwell and cannot come. However, at short notice, we have been able to secure the services of KevinBailey who will give a talk entitled 'Hostas and Ferns'.

Visitors and new members will be very welcome.

It has been two months since theoriginal press release, and if youhaven’t seen the works to date, there has been huge progress atthe summit of Moel Famau. However, with snow for threeweeks combined with some prettytough weather, this work has beendelayed somewhat. On a morepositive note, some amazing findshave been uncovered.Very little work has beenundertaken on the summit since1969, most of which was done tostabilise the structure followinggradual deterioration from the1860s onwards. Before starting onsite we knew that we were inuncharted territory, with nohistoric plans available and only acouple of historic photos of theexisting tower. Initial excavationswere carried out (and to the eagleeyed, temporary timber fenceposts were installed at thesummit) to investigate the state ofthe original bastion wall (Bastion - an element built at an angle to the main structure

to ensure structural stability). The intention was, and still is, to reveal the existingbastion (which has stood for the majority of its time under approximately 5m ofground) and to allow easier access to the top level of the Jubilee Tower.Following the commencement of works by Grosvenor Construction, the first bigsurprise after only a couple of days working was to find that the inside of the bastionwas circular, instead the anticipated square or unshaped. This discovery resulted infull re-design of the proposed internal stair within the bastion to ensure that allarchaeology and finds were preserved for future generations to enjoy.

As further excavations took place itbecame apparent that this circularcore continued to the originalground level. The intention had beento break into one edge of thebastion to allow access into and uponto the tower’s platform level. However, as works progressed, excavations revealed a previouslyunknown opening. This was not onlya bonus, as it did not require anybreaking through; it raised thequestions of why was there an opening there at all? Also, was there originally astaircase within the bastion? Original photographs showing staggered windowssuggest that this was the case, but the blocking up of the entrances externally (beforethe collapse of the tower) suggest otherwise. Perhaps the opening was only intendedas an opening for construction purposes…..This brings us up to date with the discovery works to the end of May, with someconstruction work still to be carried out. Thursday the 16th May saw Ysgol Bro Famauhaving a guided tour around the Jubilee Tower by members of the DenbighshireCountry Service team. What will be found next and how will these discoveries alter future plans? We anticipate completing the works, with the bastion fully exposed and accessible tothe public by the beginning of August. These archaeological investigations and improved accessibility to the Jubilee Towerwere commissioned by Denbighshire County Council and Flintshire County Counciland funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund.

John was born in Llanferres in 1895, the youngest son of John Matthew and CatherineCordiner (née Kerr - born in Ireland) He had an elder brother, two elder and two youngersisters residing at Rhos Farm, the family later living at Ty-Fy-Nain on Forestry Road.

John enlisted in the village in early 1916 and joined the 1st Battalion after basic trainingas a draft replacement (the Cheshires had been fighting in France since August 1914)

The first battle of the Somme started on July 1st 1916 after an eight day, largelyineffective, bombardment of the German positions with over 1.7 million shells ofvarious calibres fired over a 30 kilometre front, and the explosion of 10 hugeunderground mines under the opposing trenches. The attack at 7.30am, in broaddaylight, was a disaster with a scarcely credible 57,470 casualties on the first day, including 19,240 killed, most of those in the first few hours, and remains the blackestday ever for the British army.

The Cheshires were involved from the end of July at both the infamous High Wood andDelville (Devil’s) Wood before going into reserve; and at the end of August wereordered to relieve the 14th Royal Warwicks, and moved to Chimpanzee Trench nearHardecourt, in preparation for an attack on Falfemont farm (battle of Guillemont)planned for the 3rd September.

It was later that morning, probably before 10.00am that John was killed, aged just 21.The regimental diary states “casualties during the day were not very heavy, butamounted to about 23 other ranks” tragically, some of those from “shorts” of 75mmshells from a nearby French gun battery. John was one of 6 killed in action that day, alsoone officer and one other ordinary rank dying later of wounds received. The subsequent attack on the farm was driven back on the 3rd but objectives finally takenthe following afternoon and the battalion withdrawn with an “estimated 460 casualties”-

They were shelled heavily withlachrymatory gas (a severe often fatal formof tear gas) throughout the 31st but therelief was completed by 2.30am, thetrenches being very difficult to locate in thedark and under extreme conditions, theorderly also having lost his way.Early morning around 6.30am four Germansoldiers (one wounded) wandered into “A”Company’s advanced trenches and werecaptured.

Men of Llanferres in the Great Warmore than half of the diminished battalion number, and of which, only 300, all ranksfighting strength, were at roll call on the 6th at Citadel camp (now a cemetery) afterrelief by the Royal Irish Fusiliers.

John is buried in Quarry Cemetery (Mountauban), then an advanced dressing station, with 583 other known ranks, posthumously awarded the Victory Medal and British Warmedal (known colloquially as “Mutt and Jeff”)

He is also commemorated on his parent’s grave in Llanferres churchyard with thepoignant wording “He did his duty faithfully”

The 1st Battalion Cheshire Regiment suffered the highest casualties of all the Cheshirebattalions in the war - a total of 1,259 other ranks killed or died of wounds / disease -more than the nominal strength (1,007) of a battalion.

We will be holding a Great War exhibition in Llanferres’ Church during the openchurch period May - September next year. Please come and visit.

Toddler Group for Llanferres

There seem to be about four or five Mums and toddlers who have displayedan interest in meeting together in the Village Hall one morning a week during

term time and Head Mistress, Mrs Turner, is supportive.

I shall have more details in time for the July magazine but in the meantime Iwould be really grateful if all those who have spoken to me would email mewith their email address so that I can keep them up to date with progress.

Also please let me know which morning or mornings would suit you best. Isuggest the time is for 2 hours from 9.30 to 11.30 am and hopefully the cost

per Mum could be kept to £1.50 per morning to include refreshments.

We will probably need a few more Mums able to join us for the group to beviable, so please get in touch!

Despite the terrible weather this year, spring has arrived but many earlyflowering plants are late and are havingto compete with normally laterflowering species. And have younoticed the profusion of a smallflowering plant with pale lilac or whiteflowers long the edges of many roads? This is Early Scurvy-grass, often calledDanish Scurvy-grass because itsscientific name is Cochlearia danica.Normally a plant of the salt marsh, itflourishes on road edges because thede-icing of the roads in winter hascreated a mini salt marsh along theverge.

Summer migrant birds have arrived butin varying amounts. Chiffchaffs andWillow warblers are in good numbers, Ihave seen more Pied flycatchers than Isaw last year and Blackcaps andRedstarts would appear to be in normalnumbers but I have not yet seen orheard a Wood warbler. However, frommy own observations I would saySwallows and House martins are welldown but they may still arrive if wehave an improvement in the weather. Ihave been pleased to hear and seeCuckoos, not here in Llanferres butlocally. I was fortunate to see two maleCuckoos in dispute. One was perchedatop a small tree when it was attackedby another which drove it off and stolethe perch. The first bird flew toanother tree but the moment it startedto 'cuckoo' it was again attacked by thesecond bird and they flew into the airwhere they engaged in vigorous combatuntil one flew away. The winner thenresumed its perch but when it'cuckooed' the other returned andattacked it. They then fought in the airbut went out of sight so I was not able

to see the final result. I have never seenthat before.

On a visit to Walney Island, off theCumbrian coast, in late April, I wasinterested to see a small flock of geesewhich I did not recognise as a nativespecies. They were Emperor geesewhich have escaped from a wildlifecollection and taken up residence onWalney. Perhaps more intriguing, oneseemed to have paired up with aBarnacle goose. By this time theBarnacle should have returned to itsGreenland breeding site. Is it a birdwhich is unfit to make the longmigration flight or did it stay 'just forlove'? Many years ago I witnessed afemale Barnacle goose which had pairedwith a male Aylesbury duck on a site inYorkshire. Eggs were laid but werestolen before they could hatch, sowhether they were fertile or not wasnever established.

Butterflies would seem to be having adifficult start to the season. So far, Ihave seen very few of those that usuallyemerge from hibernation or haveoverwintered as pupae. Perhaps theyare waiting for a spell of more clementweather.

I notice that there is considerably lessWater crowfoot in the river this year.Usually by now the river bottom iscarpeted with this plant but I suspect ithas been scoured out by the frequentspates experienced last winter. Itsscarcity could have a detrimentalimpact on the invertebrate life and, consequently, the birds of the river.

A Welsh Memorial in Flanders -An Urgent Appeal for Help!

Peter Jones, the coordinator of this campaign recently visited Belgium andmet with the Mayor of Langemark which is the administrative centre for theareas of Paschendaele, Boezinge, and Pilkem. These places are where the3rd. battle of Ypres took place, commonly known as the battle of Paschendaele.

It was here the 38th. Welsh division fought and suffered terrible losses . Tworevered poets were killed, Francis Ledwich from Ireland and our own "HEDD WYN "( Ellis Humphrey Evans ). The story of Hedd Wyn and " YGadair Ddu ", the black chair has passed into legend

The Mayor informed Peter that a parcel of land has been donated very closeto where Hedd Wyn died in 1917. The Belgian local authority is to convertthe parcel of land into a landscaped Welsh garden of remembrance. Therewill be off road parking and a coach drop off area. The local council out thereis to provide for this at a cost of 40,000 EUROS.

On his return to Wales Peter visited the "Graig yr Hesg" quarry inPontypridd which quarries an excellent blue pennant hard stone, ideal forbuilding the memorial in the shape of a Cromlech. The managers are todonate the stone. It therefore leaves the campaign with the job oftransporting the stones to Belgium, obtaining a large metal Dragon andpaying the Belgian Engineers to build the Cromlech. Funds are still beingsought for this.

To support this campaign please contact Peter Jones on 07974044960 orE.mail [email protected]

Cheques should be made payable to : The Welsh Memorial in FlandersCampaign and sent to c/o Peter Jones,117 Heol Tawe, Abercrave, Swansea,SA9 1XR.
