The cryogenic liquefied natural gas arrives by truck from Rotterdam and is then transferred directly as a module to the barge. A LNG bunker station can be expected in Hamburg during 2016 at the earliest. The following are of interest in this context: The Brunsbüttels harbour industry and its regional industry have recently also registered an interest in building an LNG import terminal. This could also benefit Hamburg harbour.

The LNG-barge was built in a shipyard in Slovakia and arrived in Hamburg harbour early October after a three week journey via the Danube, Main, Rhine, the North Sea and the Elbe. The Czech company Chart Ferox was responsible for the container construction. HEROSE supplied it with various globe valves. The product portfolio ranged from manual shut-off valves to pneumatically actuated valves with comprehensive accessories.

HEROSE managing director Zschalich: “This was a demanding order. Not only did various production particularities have to be taken into account, but the time pressure was also immense.”

The following conditions had to be considered for the valves for the LNG- barge: The valves had to be adapted to the operating conditions (technical adaptations). Further required were

On the road towards more environmentally friendly fuels for shipping, such as LNG, the maritime industry still encounters numerous obstacles in spite of first successes. The technology is available, but the infrastructure is lacking, said shipping companies during a specialist conference in Leer. More bunker stations would need to be built to allow the ships to fill up with LNG on their journeys. State subsidies were also demanded to make the "high investment costs in LNG drives affordable for shipping companies". In Norway 14 ships with LNG engines are already operating. In Germany a Borkum ferry is currently being converted and a Helgoland ferry being built for gas propulsion. In the Netherlands four river ships are in construction.

special limit switches and special aluminium cabinets. The valves had to be sea water resistant and fire-safe in accordance with EN ISO 10497, the accessories had to be specially coated. Specific casting was produced because the casting process had to be monitored and certified by the classification society Bureau Veritas (BV). The control valve was newly developed. And the delivery time was only ten weeks.

The LNG-Barge concept is not only of interest to sea harbours. It can also be utilised on rivers, for example at water construction sites or harbours. “We see excellent prospects for our technology, because environmental awareness is continually increasing, leading to stricter national and global regulations for the protection of people and the environment”, said Dirk Lehmann, managing director of Becker Marine Systems.

Liquefied natural gas is beginning a versatile use for shipping. In Scandinavia ferries already operate with LNG as fuel for the main engine – HEROSE supplied various valves for construction of these ships (report by vc). Becker Marine Systems plans container feeder ships with natural gas drives in the Baltic Sea in the future. The Hamburg shipping company Hansa Treuhand also has a similar concept in hand according to its founder and owner Hermann Ebel. And Björn Rosengren, CEO of the Finnish corporation Wärtsila, a leading manufacturer of ship engines and a client of HEROSE, recently stated on the SMM exhibition in Hamburg (see page 6): “Today about 50 ships with natural gas drives operated globally; in 2020 this number might already be 1200 or 1300.”

1 2Globe valve DN 200 / Type 01341

Wow, this is heavy!

Safety valve Type 06810/06815

Number 2 in the new seriesThis is the new heavy-weight amongst the HEROSE valves: the DN 200/

type 01341, weighing approximately 130 kg. This new globe valve in gated design for LNG follows the trend for ever larger nominal widths within the industry. The internal fittings of this valve can be varied, making it also suitable for other media than LNG. A fire safe version has already been developed.

The valve design was produced with the aid of computer flow simulation (CFD – computer fluid dynamics). Erhard Dammrath, development manager at HEROSE: "With CFD we have reached a new dimension. Not only did the software contribute decisively to the optimum flow characteristics, it also resulted in cost savings. We no longer needed to build a standard prototype – and the client benefits from material savings and easier handling during operation." The basic housing material is stainless steel of the grade 1.4308 or 1.4409, the welded connection will be produced in accordance with client requests. Flanged housings can also be supplied. By the way, the large nominal size was also a quantum leap for HEROSE assembly, where e.g. new test stands had to be procured.

Number 2 in the new series

With the production of the type 1114/1116, a further developed globe valve, the new automatic assembly line of HEROSE passed one of its first practical tests. The new cast iron head piece of the valve top will be of a single piece construction in its short version, reducing the number of welding joints. The number of components in the disc suspension could also be reduced, making the suspension more flexible and robust. The result is e.g. a reduction in noise and wear with identical flow performance – together with an improvement in safety. On the one hand the bolted connections in the disc suspension are omitted; seals can in future be replaced without the use of tools. Furthermore the new seal design offers improved sealing properties, and field tests demonstrated that fewer seal fractures occurred.

With the safety valve type 06810/ 06815 the 2nd model of a new series of high pressure safety valves presents itself – after the type 06850/06855 which was launched on the market two years ago. The valve can be universally used for vapours, gases and liquids, including oxygen, up to a pressure of 180 bar and is completely made of stainless steel. The development was computer-assisted using CFD flow simulation. Since the sealing surfaces of the valves ware stressed a lot at pressures up to 180 bar, they are "reinforced" by way of overlay welding. Further models with larger nominal sizes are in development.

Dependent on the material, cryogenic globe valves are welded or brazed". A typical example is the top extension. If this extension consists of a non-ferrous material, such as bronze or brass, it is brazed; for stainless steel – or austenite – it is welded. Thorsten Cordes, welding supervisor at HEROSE, explains the diff erence: "With brazing the melted solder diff uses into the top material of the components to be joined – with welding the base material of these components is melted and joined at up to 1200° Celsius."

Because cryogenic technology at HEROSE has long been one of the key revenue generators, about

50 employees now work in this fi eld – including eight brazers and welders. Whereas Thorsten Cordes is their technical line manager, Manfred Neels is responsible for the personnel and organises the daily routine. Since late October Mr. Safwat Anwer Mohamed has been inducted as new group manager. The department works in a single shift from 6.00 to 15.00 or 7.00 to 16.00 hours. Cordes: "Because gunmetal retains its cold-strength properties also at very low temperatures, it is especially suited for cryogenic technology." This results in a ratio of approximately 70:30 for brazing and welding. The tops or bodies are joined at two brazing machines.

Manfred Neels: "The troubles with gunmetal, however, is limited in it's hard solderability. The necessary high temperatures regularly cause the material components to evaporate, so that the valve cannot be used. For tops the waste is max. 2 percent, for housings it is up to 30 percent". Thorsten Cordes: "There is nothing you can do about it. But we check every valve carefully for its sealing properties. Therefore, every customer can be absolutely sure: if you buy from HEROSE, you get optimal materials."

The three welding machines at HEROSE are each operated by a certifi ed welder. As with brazing, safety is paramount. "For the so-called TIG welding we use

The most important exhibition for ship building and maritime technology worldwide, the SMM in early September, set a new record: more than 2,100 exhibitors took part – including, for the fi rst time, HEROSE. "We are very happy with the result", managing director Dirk Zschalich positively summed up the event attended by more than 50,000 specialist visitors. With the stand motto "LNG Fuelling" HEROSE hit one of the central topics of SMM this year. Zschalich: "Not only did we meet all important customers who matter to us for the further strategic cooperation regarding LNG, but we also made many new and interesting contacts."

and which is considered the most challenging type of welding, detailed rules exist", says Thorsten Cordes, who himself had to attend a 2½ months long course to be approved as welding supervisor. Just like "his" three welders he is regularly inspected by the TÜV – and the certification body also checks the valves from the HEROSE production during regular random sampling.

Is this not all a bit over the top? Thorsten Cordes: "Not at all. Welding is a difficult task. And all welders in this company agree: "We must continually practice – because it is all too easy to lose the necessary skill required in manual welding."
