Jive is an American tapas restaurant in Los Angeles designed around the personality of Ellen DeGeneres. I based my design concept around her fun, dancing, laughing, and congenial personality. I used these characteristics to lead my design decisions.

I can never decide what I want when I go to restaurants. That’s why at Jive we serve our version of tapas. Don’t get it confused with tappers though. We aren’t going to serve you live tappers at your table. You have to go somewhere else for that.

Enjoy your meal, Ellen

These views highlight the exhibition kitchen and center area that serves as the “show” for the patrons. While dining, patrons can also view clips of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” which are projected on tinted glass dividers.

As a way to present fashion apparel in a Ready to Wear format, I created a series of visual merchandising systems based on the concept of framing. I used this concept to create displays that framed the style or seasonal trends of any family of merchandise in a highly visible way.

The use of motorized graphic scrolls provides an attractive visual of what can be found at each display, as well as a reference of how the merchandise can be used to create a fashionable look. The scrolls can be changed to accommodate new styles and seasonal trends.

Large frames present items or collections that are featured for the season. They serve as a visual go-to for shoppers looking for the latest products. The fixture parts are shown in ways that allow for different traffic flow and price point needs.

This furniture piece was created as part of a furniture design and build class. It was constructed through the use of a hollow slab door which was cut down, blocked out, and covered in a walnut veneer. A stainless steel bracelet serves as a shelf.

The Bangle Table has been accepted into the 2010 Design Quest furniture competition. Only 1 in 4 entries were selected for exhibition and judging.

Several study models show different finish options for carrying out the concept of banding. I played with proportions, colors, and materials for the actual bands. Ultimately I decided that one simple band would work dually with the concept as well as to conceal the items that could be placed inside.

Based on a 6” grid system, this residential loft was designed around the concept of units. I chose an active, empty-nest couple as my client base. To give them a little organization for all the activities they do, I used my concept to separate spaces into cubes and platforms based on their functions. The concept model above was where my design originated.

This project pairs a retailer with an existing campaign to create a storefront window display. I paired MAC Cosmestics with The Compact, a campaign to use only natural minerals in cosmetic products.

In this storefront display, a grass wall made from Japanese Blood Grass is the surface for a projected image of a woman whose face is made up with different exotic grasses. The sides of the grass wall feature flowers with centers composed of makeup compacts or lights. The left side of the window display features tall grass blades surrounding a single flower which features the promoted product line in the center.

Baya, which means “berry” in Spanish, is a frozen yogurt and smoothie store. For this free-lance graphics project, I was asked to come up with a name, logo, and graphic applications for a client who was looking to start up a frozen yogurt location. The client wanted to emphasize berries as an ingredient, so I created a raspberry as a key graphic.

For this project, I challenged the use of plastic bags and pop tabs to create a ceiling fixture. Plastic bags were collected, cut into rings, and linked together to form a yarn. The plastic bag yarn was then wrapped through pop tabs to make long strands, which was attached to a frame at different angles. The end product is a recycled, but still glittery, ceiling fixture.

7,500 aluminum pop tabs and 73 plastic bags were collected and used to create this ceiling fixture. The 1/2” wide pop tabs were woven tightly together with the plastic bag yarn to create strands of various lengths. The pop tab strands were tied to metal hooks in a wood frame.

As part of an ink-gum transfer series, these prints center around consumerism. The piece to the left, entitled “Attention Shoppers,” is a play on the everyday shopper. The other piece, “Future Business Leaders of America,” shows that from an early age children are learning how to make a dime, and attract consumers with a competitive edge.

As part of a different group of prints, this woodcut was created through the use of an mdf block. The process of creating a woodcut print involves printing several layers of colors on top on one another, carving away a larger portion of the block each time. Once my image was drawn out, I began printing with a blend roll for the horizon and pavement. From there, I printed my lighter colors and gradually got darker. With each print, the previously printed layer was carved from the block for the next layer I would print. In total, this piece was printed in five layers.

As a way to incorporate my Gerontology focus into my design classes, I designed a senior community center for my capstone project. Located in Queens, New York, this urban building enables older adults to pick up new hobbies, form social bonds, and feel comfortable during this life stage transition. The sketch above shows the building exterior and roof garden.

These sketches show elements of my design. Above, the undulating plexiglass diips down at areas of interest as a wayfinding tool. The perspective on the left, shows this element installed. The perspective shows the cafe and cooking class areas of Vida. Visitors can sit down to a game of cards, to socialize, or learn how to prepare new recipes.

As part of my summer internship, I was responsible for creating a 3D model and perspectives of the design for a new Pompeu Bellusci location. The model was created using SketchUp, and the perspectives were taken from SketchUp with the addition of Photoshop and hand rendering techniques.

Pompeu Bellusci is a men’s shoe and accessories company based out of Brazil. Each of their shoes is hand made, and this store would mark their first U.S. location. The design also features the promotion of their Maggiore shoe collection.

office DESIGN

The intention of this studio was to create a corporate environment for a design firm. Given 25,000 sf of space over two floors, we relocated the building based on the firm location we chose. My office for IA Interior Architects was relocated to their San Francisco headquarters.

The ceiling plan to the left shows a “connection map,” which outlines where collaboration or connection points occur. The ceiling is made from a gyp drop with LED lights installed within. This plan was part of the construction document set that was created for this project.

The perspectives to the right show the workstations for designers on the sixth and seventh floors. The perspective to the left shows a group of workstations allotted for visiting designers. This area of the office is located on the seventh floor, with direct access to the elevators. For the rest of the plan, I wanted to create a sense of unity and connection. For this reason, I put the materials library at a central location, with visual access for all.
