COMMON ROOMThere’s nothing common about this communal space, which showcases a cool mishmash of features: a slinky bar counter serving spectacular molecular cocktails, sumptuous international tapas-style dishes and a spacious outdoor terrace. The menu is one of the most tempting we’ve come across – categorised into sections of earth, sea, land and heaven – with the rich and creamy pastas being particularly drool-worthy. This is the kind of common room where we’d gladly walk in, kick off our heels and slouch round for a few hours.

The BeLLBROOKThe latest concept by Australian wonder chef David Laris, The BellBrook (named after the chef’s home town) has taken over the space that was formerly the chef’s eponymous restaurant. Calling itself an “Oz bistro”, The BellBrook takes a fun, casual approach to the global flavours that make up modern Australian cuisine. We’re big fans of the laid-back vibe and focus on the country’s multicultural heritage. Everything is meant to be shared – from small bites of black pork Scotch eggs and pickled octopus to bigger plates such as Kinkawooka mussels and pan-fried kangaroo loin (it doesn’t get much more Aussie than that). The BellBrook’s dessert menu is a scrumptious tribute to childhood faves like sticky date pudding and pavlova.

wAgyu Even if we’ve woken up on the wrong side of the bed, tucking into Wagyu’s Big Breakfast is sure to sort us out – this is a bang-up British fry-up complete with eggs, bacon, Cumberland sausage, home-fried potatoes, roast tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, baked beans and toast. Open bright and early from 7:30am, Wagyu’s scrumptious breakfast menu includes the usual brekkie suspects such as pancakes, French toast, toasted bagels and eggs Benedict, but there are also more creative options, including breakfast pizza and bruschetta. In an area that’s lacking in noteworthy breakfast spots, Wagyu is LKF’s saving grace.

ReSTORATION This New Orleans-style restaurant run by native head chef Jack Carson has wowed us again and again with its delicious soul food and warm Southern hospitality. Authentic Creole-Cajun comfort food is difficult to get right outside the Big Easy, so it’s pretty incredible that Chef Carson has succeeded thousands of miles away in LKF. The seafood gumbo, crab cakes and jambalaya are firm favourites, and make sure to end your meal with a slice of Restoration’s sinfully good pecan pie along with a cup of chicory coffee. This place has definitely restored our soul on many an occasion.

How do you come up with concepts for new restaurants? Viviano: We, of course, research the market to find out what is missing or how we can do something better. However, we also create restaurants based on the kinds of foods we love. For Souvla, I am half Greek, and Michael (our executive chef) has a strong background in Greek cooking, so it was quite a natural fit. We find inspirations for various cooking techniques and ingredients through our travels as well. For example, to gear up for the opening of Chicha, our team spent quite some time in Peru with local chefs and at local markets to truly understand the cuisine.

What would you order if you were dining at Souvla? Michael: Our concept behind Souvla is family-style dining where everyone can be included in a very social meal, so I’d focus my ordering on small plates. I’d start off with the taramasalata, a fluffy spread of smoked cod roe, lemon and garlic, along with our freshly baked pita breads. Then I'd move on to the saganaki, grilled Kefalograviera cheese on a hotplate served with our homemade fig marmalade slow-cooked with orange, cinnamon and star anise. The dolmades are a must, since rice rolled with mint and yoghurt in vine leaves is quintessentially Greek. For mains, I’d suggest our grilled whole sea bream – it’s simple, good

eating at its best. The slow-cooked, then flash-grilled, lamb ribs are also a sure bet. As a side, I’m a huge fan of our Cypriot salata, which is a mix of cracked wheat, lentils and pine nuts in a honey-cumin yoghurt dressing. And to wrap up the meal, I’d vote for our Golden Greek Time: a fried vanilla ice cream ball with a chocolate centre, drizzled with salted caramel and our home-made honeycomb. We blend our ice cream with mastiki, which is resin from an indigenous tree found all over Greece, and this gives the ice cream an almost “chewy” texture.

LuX BISTRO & BAR

Nestled in the heart of LKF, LUX specialises in modern European cuisine. The restaurant is divided into two levels; the lower level is dominated by the bar, whilst the upper level offers a more intimate dining space. Lunch sets here include juices, bread, appetisers of soup or salad, a main course, dessert, plus coffee or tea – all for around $150, which is quite the bang for your buck. The relaxed atmosphere means you won’t be bumping elbows

with fellow diners in cramped, hurried spaces.

Kyoto Joe has been crafting sushi in LKF long before the likes of Sushi Kuu entered the scene. Lunch sets here are delicious, fast and efficient, ranging from teriyaki and udon to sushi and sashimi sets, encompassing the full range of the restaurant’s specialities. Prices average around $200, or splurge a bit more for their Premium and Executive sets, which includes enticing dishes such as Kobe beef roll, spicy toro tartare, rock shrimp gyoza and sea

bass shiso.

One of the remnants of British colonial rule is the hotchpotch of East-meets-West cuisine found in local Hong Kong restaurants. Loyal Dining recreates the early “fusion” menus of the retro 60s and 70s, when interlopers between Western and Chinese cooking such as baked pork chop in tomato sauce and Swiss sauce chicken wings reigned supreme. For that classic retro Hong Kong taste, diners can choose from lunch sets ranging from $90–110. And with options like dim sum, baked cheesy rice and Hainan chicken, diners are sure to find their nostalgic fix here.
