EcosystemECOSYSTEM POND APPROACH TO WATER GARDENING AND THE PRODUCTS THAT SUPPORT IT Ecosystem ponds can be easy to understand if you have a good grasp of what components go into a basic, functioning ecosystem. An ecosystem pond works with Mother Nature to provide food, shelter, and safety to the wildlife around it. It also provides you with an all-natural, low-maintenance piece of paradise. It’s important to remember, however, that every piece of the ecosystem puzzle must be present in order for a true ecosystem to be in place. Eliminate one of these elements and you’ve got an unbalanced ecosystem that won’t be so low-mainte-nance anymore. Check out the things you’ll need to get your ecosystem pond fired up:

EcosystemECOSYSTEM POND APPROACH TO WATER GARDENING AND THE PRODUCTS THAT SUPPORT IT

1. Filtration System - Includes the use of both a biological and a mechanical filter. • A BioFalls® (biological filter) provides surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonize and remove excess nutrients from the water. • A Skimmer (mechanical filter) will not only pre-filter the water and house the pump; it will also skim debris from the water’s surface to prevent ex-cess accumulation of organic materials on the pond floor. 2. Rocks and Gravel - Rocks and gravel will not only protect pond liners from UV light degrada-tion, but they will also provide tremendous surface area for beneficial bacteria to break down excess nutrients in the water and dissolve organic debris on the pond floor. 3. Recirculation System - This is really just a fancy way of saying “pumps and plumbing.” The proper size pump and pipe diameter are extremely important for the aesthetics of a water feature. More importantly, an efficient circulation system will keep the water moving and provide the nec-essary oxygen levels for healthy fish, plants, and beneficial bacteria. 4. Fish - Fish are an integral part of any ecosystem. Unfortunately, fish are often seen as

high maintenance. Contrary to popular belief, fish actually reduce pond maintenance as they graze on string algae and bottom feed from the pond floor. They also make very enjoyable pets, provid-ing hours of natural entertainment. 5. Aquatic Plants - Mother Nature’s true filters, plants are great for adding character to a pond by providing color and texture, but from a fil-tration perspective, they’re second to none. When given proper coverage, aquatic plants thrive from the excess nutrients in an ecosystem pond and deprive algae of its food source. Because of this, aquatic plants are critical for the overall health of the ecosystem.

5

Let’s Talk About the Five Elements of the Healthy Ecosystem

Page 6: Living Waterscapes Lifestyle 2015 Edition

6

HOW DO ALL THESE ELEMENTS WORk TOGETHER? In order to have a successful water gardening experience, you must think systematically and understand the critical role of each ingredient in Mother Nature’s recipe. • The fish nibble on the old plant life including the algae. • In turn, the fish produce waste that, along with other forms of natural debris, fall to the pond’s bottom. • Debris is broken down by the aerobic bacteria and the other microorganisms colonized on the rocks and gravel all over the pond bottom. • Once broken down, these substances are absorbed as nutrition by the plants. • The plants grow and are once again nibbled on by the fish ... ‘round and ‘round it goes, infinitely.

So, in a naturally balanced ecosystem pond, you have this never-ending aquatic circle of life where all parts complement the others, and play critical roles in the pond’s natural born harmony.

Having all these things in place makes all the difference in the health and success of your ecosystem pond. Use them and work with Mother Nature, not against her, for a chemical-free wonderland of water! The truth is that most people opt for the ecosystem way of water gardening be-cause it’s easier and it just makes sense. A low-maintenance ecosystem pond provides you with more free time to enjoy friends and family... while gathered around your pond, of course!

We pride ourselves in offering the best products and services. Because of this, we can offer the best warranties in the industry. All of our Signature Series filters and skimmers come with a limited lifetime warranty. This provides not only natural beauty, but also protects your liner from cuts, tears, and UV rays. Our Aquasurge pump line is the most energy efficient line on the market and also has the best warranty at 3 years with full replacement.

Our plumbing lines are PVC Flex pipe that have been tested 50 degrees below zero, full of water, and will not crack or burst. We offer a 20 year warranty against material failure in pumps for water lines. We also offer a full 1 year warranty on all materials and workmanship in the water garden installation. STREAM

FISh CAVE

Waterscapes become the focal point of any backyard with their waterfalls and ponds. The waterfalls bring the excitement of sound and crash-ing water into a variety of settings, but streams are the enticement for all the wondrous wildlife we cherish. Birds, butterflies, and dragonflies add color

and use the slow moving water of the stream to bathe and drink. Pets also love drinking the fresh, cool, naturally filtered water. Adding a stream to a water feature gives it the natural look of a mountain creek with multiple falls.

Protecting your pets is important. We all cherish our pets, and your fish will quickly become a part of the family. A fish cave will protect your new pets from predators while also offering a cool shelter during hot summer days. We incorporate a fish cave into a shelf of your pond and cover it with stone and gravel to maintain a beautiful, natural look.

koi... the jewels of the water garden! Everyone who has koi loves the joy of feeding them, watching them swim through caves and waterfalls, and even naming them. Koi and goldfish come in every color and shape, including some with long, graceful fins. Fish are not only friendly and beautiful, they are also low maintenance pets.

• Koi & goldfish come in a wide variety of sizes, depending on seasonal availability.• They both thrive in all seasonal outdoor environments.• They are able to breed by the time they reach 56” in length.• They can grow in relation to their nutrition, water conditions, and are also affected by their genetics. Jumbo fish will get large, regardless of tank size. Koi can get to sizes in excess of 24”. Check out Butterfly Koi. These koi have the long, flowing fins, with the beautiful markings of koi (typically 10-15” in length). Goldfish are perfect for any size pond small to large.• Dormancy occurs during the winter, once water temperatures drop below 50 degrees F. This is also the point at which they should stop being fed. As long as the pond does not freeze to the bottom and an air hole is provided on the pond’s surface, your fish will survive the winter. healthy water is critical to fish health. Keep your pond filtered both mechanically and biologically.

FACTS ABOUT FISh

PLANTS Aquatic plants aren’t just used to provide beauty and naturalization, but they also serve the very impor-tant function of helping to balance the pond ecosystem. Their valuable biological filtration helps remove nitrogen, ammonia, nitrates, and other minerals that algae would otherwise feed on. In addition, the plants provide food, shade, and protection for the fish and wildlife that live in and around the pond. Water lilies are available in hardy and tropical varieties. They both come in a wide variety of colors, shapes, and

sizes, and the leaves provide fish with shade from the heat of the summer sun, cooling the water and making algae control easier too.

We are also available to answer any questions you may have regarding how your system functions, fish health, or ideas on how to get more enjoy-ment out of your water feature. Service call charge must be paid prior to visit, and all materials or additional hours of labor will be billed onsite and must be paid at the time of service by check or credit card. It is recommended that your pond be drained and cleaned every spring for optimal enjoyment, and pristine water quality through-out the season. $500.00 (up to 2000 gallon pond). Fall Shutdown: We all love the color of the fall season, but leaves can wreak havoc on a pond. It is recommended to cover your pond with a net to protect from a buildup of leaf debris. Monthly maintenance: If you lead a busy lifestyle and want to just come home and relax by the pond, we have a 15 point monthly maintenance pro-gram.
