Howmight a performance last an entireyear? How dowemark time and howdoes it mark us?

Since October 2009, the Making Time gardenhas been a continual presence outside thePeter Scott Gallery. Created by artistsElizabeth Willow and Jonathan Raisin, it istheir response to a Nuffield Theatrecommission to develop a year-longperformance.

Behind this transformation of a neglectedspace is an exploration of presence andabsence, the nature of performance, and theways we experience and respond to time.Through the changing seasons, Making Timeis a live essay in performance and a uniquelypositive take on durational art.

At noon on the 21 October the artists willleave the garden. During the weeks leadingup to this there will be events to mark theending of the year. Details will be available onthe Nuffield website, and garden visitors arealways welcome.

The artists are creating a book for publicationlater in the year; and in Spring 2011 we willhost a symposium to consider further theconcepts and ideas behind the project.

23 NOVEMBER – 17 DECEMBER 2010

Opening 22 November 6pm

A compulsive collector, a jumbler of icons and apioneer of Pop, Sir Eduardo Paolozzi (1924–2005) is equally revered for his mechanisticsculptures and his kaleidoscopic print projects.

General Dynamic F.U.N is a series of fiftyscreenprints and photolithographs createdbetween 1965 and 1970, for which Paolozziemploys the technologies of mass-reproductionand gorges on its idols – the household namesand familiar faces of consumer advertising, highfashion and Hollywood. For Paolozzi, themodern age, exposed as ephemera, is anecessarily fragmented collision of visualstimulus and influence.

13 OCTOBER –13 NOVEMBER 2010

Opening 12 October 6pm

Ellie Rees creates carefullyconstructed performances whichemploy humour and irony toinvestigate what it means to be awoman and an artist. Rees isespecially interested in archetypesand narrative structures on thesubject of gender and love foundwithin opera and Hollywood film. Itis the often exaggerated and oversimplified depictions of ourselves inthese art forms that Rees reflects on,in particular that of women in highand popular culture and theinconsistency between the liberatedfemale role and the romantic viewsproposed by those cultures.

Rees’ work both plays with andquestions the nature ofperformance, particularly looking at

the difference between live andrecorded spectacle. Her aim is not todocument a live performance eventwith an audience, but to make aprecise performance to camera. Reeshas described her work as a questfor perfection that can never beachieved, saying that her quest as aperformer could function as ananalogy for the quest for perfectionin romance.

Hetain Patel’s films look at communication, rhythm andmovement. In the two films Kanku Raga and To Dance LikeYour Dad, Patel takes particular influence from Tabla andinheritance versus imitation. The presentation of Patel’s filmswill coincide with a performance of his new work TEN,which takes place in the Nuffield Theatre on 4 November(see page 25). Selected works from the Peter Scott Gallerycollection will be on show alongside Patel’s films.

A new show from Forced Entertainment is a major event in the UK theatricalcalendar, so we are delighted to be hosting this important UK Premiere.

The company’s 25-year body of work reflects an interest in the mechanicsof theatre itself, the role of the audience, and the machinations ofcontemporary urban life. “One of Britain’s greatest theatre companies”(The Guardian), these pioneers of the British avant-garde have anunparalleled international reputation.

In The Thrill Of It All, nine performers in grubby tuxedos play out a comicaland disconcerting vaudeville to the strains of Japanese lounge music.Deranged dancing girls swirl, giggle and bicker. Shabby comperes competefor the microphone and the audience’s attention. Dances end in fights, jokesend in confusion, and sentimental stories end in arguments in this unsettlingand extraordinary performance.

Forced Entertainment is regularly funded by Arts Council England.

A jaw-dropping dance theatre spectacle that will have you laughing out loudand holding back the tears.

For the first time, Ludus Dance and the Nuffield Theatre have togethercommissioned three new dance pieces. In this electrifying triple-bill, three ofthe UK’s most prominent choreographers – Nigel Charnock, Yael Flexer andBenWright – each take you on a compelling journey of cause and effect, in apulse-racing mix of energetic dance, theatre and music.

Nigel Charnock brings you a thunderously chaotic chunk of dance theatrethat explores the effects of order and chaos on our lives, whilst poking fun atthe self-destructing tendencies of our fame hungry society. Yael Flexer’s‘show within a show’ sees the four dancers caught up in the ripple effect oftheir own decisions as they create a show before your very eyes. Meanwhile,Ben Wright’s choreography calls us to seize the moment… NOW!

Suitable for 10 years plus and family audiences.

Winner, Edinburgh International Festival Fringe Prize 2009Guardian ‘Pick of the Fringe’

Commissioned by the Lyric Hammersmith, If That’s All There Is was a sell-out hit at theEdinburgh Festival before touring nationally to rave reviews. A young company really goingplaces, Inspector Sands follow their interest in the 21st Century mindset using theirtrademark bold visual theatre style and absurd humour.

If That’s All There Is takes shape as a mini-epic of longing, envy and psychobabble thatexamines our obsession with feeling happy at any cost. A couple are teetering on the brinkof marriage. As the happiest day of their lives approaches, the panic begins to rise. Andeveryone’s watching…

UK/Belgium-based theatre company Reckless Sleepers formed in 1988, taking its namefrom a painting by the Belgian surrealist Rene Magritte. Led by Artistic Director MoleWetherell, they have become an important and distinctive voice in contemporarytheatre, always combining intellectual inquiry with deadpan humour.

Commissioned by the Nuffield Theatre, Reckless Sleepers’ new show is about time, andtravelling, and the rehearsals for the lunar landings. It’s about what happens whenperformers become moon-rock, re-enact a zero gravity moonwalk, or leave footprintsthat will never disappear. Dancing to the songs that astronauts sung as they went intoorbit, it’s a 40th anniversary trip to the moon.

Ockham’s Razor stunned sell-out audiences at the Nuffield Theatre with previous show Arcin 2008. They return laden with awards and plaudits with their new show, The Mill, thathas astounded audiences and critics around the country..

Ockham’s Razor create daring physical theatre on specially created aerial equipment. InThe Mill, a large wheel made of wood and steel is suspended from a 7-metre high rig, linked into a system of ropes and wooden drums to create an intricate set. Powered by theperformers using all their strength and weight, they create a precarious world where smalldecisions or actions gather momentum and impetus beyond their control.

By turns treadmill and pleasure wheel, The Mill is the vehicle for a roller-coaster ridethrough every human emotion, and its effects are as unpredictable as they are dramatic.
