Profiles of Ski Club Members By Ronnie Jones Each month we will interview some members for you to get to know better.

Dave Gruenewald Number of years in Ski Club: 44 years - I was one of the “Founding Fathers” of the LRSC & helped arrange the initial meeting held at the Continental Trailways Building located at Markham & Main streets. Occupation: Electrical Engineer. I am retired from the former Bell System. Favorite place to ski: Aspen !!! I learned to ski in Aspen Christmas week of 1965. I spent my first night there in my sleeping bag on the floor of a partially fin-ished condo. I have skied there virtually every year since. Favorite place to travel: Nepal. I have been fortunate to have traveled to many incredible places including Antarctica. However, our 1979 trip to Nepal where we spent four weeks trekking on a 275 mile route through the Himalayas was like an adventure out of National Geographic. Favorite LRSC event: The Lobster Boil. Nobody knows I….. Was an artillery battery com-mander located near the DMZ in Korea (not what you would call a fun place to be) but, an enjoyable assign-ment was that I was selected to appear in a ROTC re-cruiting film that was shot in Korea & shown on col-lege campuses around the US. How did you find out about LRSC: See item # 1 above. My idea of a romantic evening: Riding down the gon-dola on Aspen Mountain in the moonlight. My dream vacation is: (Bucket List) - Mongolia & the Gobi Desert. Most memorable LRSC moment: When the club was flying to Vail & we met Elvis Presley followed by his singing, “Love Me Tender” on the intercom. Favorite foods: Grilled salmon & Asparagus. Favorite drink: Martini, Bombay Sapphire, Up, Dry with three olives. I drive: A Toyota Tundra with 198,000 miles and a 97 Jaguar.

Alice Andrews Number of years in Ski Club: 34 years. Occupation: Registered Clinical Laboratory Scientist, retired Favorite place to ski: Aspen/Snowmass Favorite place to travel: Two Top Favorites - Trekking in Nepal & Antarctica (which included side trips to Ar-gentina’s Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Buenos Aires, Iguassu Falls in Brazil). The incredible good fortune & privilege to see all that breathtaking natural beauty - the wildlife, lakes & forests, was awesome. Favorite LRSC event: Lobster Boil Nobody knows I….. I was featured in a 1967 Esquire Magazine article entitled, “27 People Worth Saving”. How did you find out about LRSC: Thanks to Dave Gruenewald! He reintroduced me to skiing in great snow in Colorado, after learning to ski on ice in NY back in 1962. My idea of a romantic evening: Either fantasy would be tops...A moonlit walk on a cool October evening, on a Buffalo River gravel bar or Upper Buffalo Wilderness or an exquisite French wine & dinner accompanied by Rachmaninoff & dancing with my unforgettable guy. My dream vacation is: A month in a French Chateau (Chenonceaux) with our own French chef & sommelier; roaming Provence with picnics featuring Baguettes, cheese & cases of Burgandy, Bordeaux & Vouvray! Aaahhh….dream on! Most memorable LRSC moment: A phone call from Dave telling me about the bus driver dying at the wheel of the LRSC bus, enroute to Aspen. What a terrifying time & what heros (Buddy Fryxell & Don Colaianni), who gained control of the bus, likely saving the lives of all on board. Favorite foods: French Chateaubriand or tounedos , Sockeye salmon, roasted or creamed potatoes, spin-ach, classic Caesar salad, Chevre cheese, crusty French bread & dessert– Grand Marnier soufflé. Oooooh, makes me smile! Favorite drink: Abelour single malt scotch anytime, gin & tonic in the summer. Wines: Chateauneuf du Pape, Pinot Noirs, Malbecs, Gewurztraminers, Vouvay, Prosecos - so many wines, so little time. I drive: A 1994 Jeep Cherokee because my canoe & I love the old Jeep.

ARKANSAS RICE DEPOT

Our Story

Way back in 1982, a few caring Arkansans noticed there were a lot of children, families and senior citizens going to bed hungry right here in Arkansas. Many food pantries were struggling for supplies. The cupboard was bare at the shelters.

Children were hungry. So these folks organized and looked for food. And they found rice.

Home-grown, nourishing and inexpensive rice. They paid for it out of their own pockets and gave it to anyone in need.

Soon word spread about this organization that provided free rice to any group willing to fight hunger in their community. And the Arkansas Rice Depot was born.

Within a couple of years, nearly one hundred rice growers from Riceland and Producers mills were donating rice.

This was just the kind of foundation the charity needed. By 1986, then-Governor Bill Clinton

helped the Arkansas Rice Depot distribute its one millionth pound of rice. For a while, rice re-mained the only food distributed, and though nourishing, it wasn't a complete meal.

A Billy Graham Crusade changed all that. Six tons of food items were collected that year, and soon dry goods, canned foods, frozen meats and other items were donated, ware-housed and distributed across the state.

In 1994, an Arkansas public school nurse noticed some children arriving at school listless and

hungry. They said their school lunch the day before was the last meal they had. She won-dered if the Arkansas Rice Depot could help. Immediately, the Food For Kids program was launched, sending hungry children home with backpacks filled with food every night.

Today the Arkansas Rice Depot serves around 600 Arkansas public schools and the Food For

Kids backpack program has been duplicated across the US, helping feed hundreds of thou-sands of hungry kids.

Every year the Arkansas Rice Depot feeds around half a million hungry Arkansans, distributing food to shelters, schools, disaster relief efforts and homebound seniors. All with minimal over-

head. And in the summer of 2009, Arkansas Rice Depot received national recognition of our pro-

grams, when All Roker brought NBC's Today Show to the Depot, with his Lend A Hand pro-gram. Through Lend A Hand, Arkansas Rice Depot received a five truckloads of items with a value totaling over $600,000. Local dignitaries came out to join in on the fun. We were one of

only five charitable organizations chosen through Lend A Hand.

You see, we don't believe in big salaries or glitzy marketing campaigns – 98% of all donations go to feeding the hungry. So you can be confident your donation fills an empty stomach. It's

how this charity started, and it's how we'll continue our mission.
