Featuring one of the tallest holiday trees inKansas, the lights were turned onFriday, November 29th at 7pm bySanta, helped by the Mayor Matta.Donations are accepted for the bene-fit of the Women's Crisis Center andGirls on the Run.

Enjoy a horse-drawn carriage rideevery Friday, Saturday, and Sunday,Dec. 7th to 22nd from 5-8 pm. Ridesare free with a non-perishable fooddonation benefiting the ManhattanEmergency Shelter. Make an excitingnew holiday tradition and bring thefamily, cozy up to the fireplace in BlueEarth Plaza, take a stroll down PoyntzAvenue, and enjoy the newly remod-eled downtown. The annual fundraiser for RSVP of the FlintHills volunteer center, Festival of Trees, opensfor public viewing and voting Dec. 2nd – Dec.5th from 9 a.m. to 8p.m., and Dec. 6th from 9a.m. to noon. The trees are hosted in the K-State Alumni Center. The public can view uniquelydesigned and decorated trees donated by local merchants and vote on their favorites. The eventwraps up on Dec. 6th starting at 6 p.m. with a Festival of Trees Gala, featuring a silent and live auc-tion of the trees. Call 785-776-7787 about tickets to the Gala.

Bring on the holiday spirit with the Mayor’s Christmas Spirit of the Holidays Lighted Parade! It takesplace Dec. 6th from 6-8 p.m. The parade will start in downtown Manhattan on Poyntz Ave. andfinish in Aggieville at Triangle Park for the tree lighting ceremony. Bundle up the whole familyand bring them out for twinkling lights, good spirits and parade entertainment.

A highlight of every winter season is the McCain Holiday Home Tour. The Friends of McCainAuditorium hold this biennial fundraiser to support the McCain Performance Series. Thisyear’s tour is Dec. 8th from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. featuring homes like the Kappa Delta House andJim and Bonnie Lynn-Sherow’s bed and breakfast home which will be fully decked-out for theholiday season. Tickets are $20 advance, $25 at the door. Call 785-532-6425 for informationon this year’s tour!

Yet another new event this time of year involves Herbie, the MHK Trolley. Reserve your spacefor trolley tours to view the beautiful holiday lights around Manhattan. The downtown Poyntz redevelopment is nearlycomplete! Stay tuned as new trees and planter components go in, but in the meantime, enjoy beautiful crosswalks, overhead lights, and new intersection stoplights, all festive for the season!

It’s been a busy year at the Convention and Visitors Bureau! Beginning with the launch of ourbrand new website, to summertime with Kicker Country Stampede, to the Fall and the annualtourism conference, the year is quickly drawing to a close.

According to the HIS Global Insight Report Tourism inRiley County reflects $188.2 Million. Shopping is #1for visitors.

Over 43 first time groups met in Manhattan during2013. These groups reflect meetings/events thatworked specifically with the Manhattan CVB.

Our hotel inventory continues to grow. In2013 Manhattan offers 1263 hotel rooms. In2014 – 189 additional rooms will be addedwith the Bluemont Hotel and Holiday InnExpress coming to life.

Travel shows were attended, sales blitzesoccurred, conferences were held and futuremeetings booked. There are new events inthe works for 2014.

One of the new features of the web-site is Jackrabbit’s Book Direct fea-ture. This allows users to comparerates among Manhattan propertiesand book rooms directly from thewebsite. This feature has generatedmore than 2,100 referrals, and as ofSept. 30th, the website had received20,000 more pageviews than the entire2012 calendar year.

The CVB partnered with K-StateAthletics “Little Apple, Willie Style.” Thiscampaign welcomes Wildcat fans toManhattan to enjoy The Little Apple®like Willie!

Throughout the year, Manhattan hosted 19 travelwriters. Travel writers are crucial to sharing thestory of Manhattan to readers across the country,and around the world. Travel writers see every-thing from the Flint Hills Discovery Center, K-State, the Tuttle Creek and local dining.

The November meeting ofthe Small Business Councilfocused on the impor-tance of local commerce.With a variety of shoppingoptions available to thecitizens of Manhattan, it isimportant to know thatwhere you shop, local, out

of town or the internet,has a big impact on thequality of a community.When consumers choosetheir local retailers, moneystays in the communityand enhances our infra-structure, parks and serv-ices through increased taxrevenue and helps createjobs and inspires entre-preneurial innovation.

The Small BusinessCouncil will promote “TryLocal First” as a way tocommunicate shopping orsourcing locally. This slo-gan does not just apply toManhattan consumers andretail shopping but to allbusinesses as they look toprocure goods and servic-es. The Small BusinessCouncil is putting togeth-er educational talks and

materials focused on thebusiness community tohelp them understand theimportance of “Try LocalFirst” as each businessconducts their daily activity.

November is a busy time forthe Military RelationsCommittee (MRC), Veteran’sDay is always big inManhattan and along withhonoring our military onNovember 11th, MRC spentthe month in many otherworthwhile endeavors.

MRC started off the monthwith Fort Riley Day at K-State. What a success! Thesun shone, the Wildcats beatIowa State, and our tailgatewas filled with Fort Riley soldiers and their familiesenjoying delicious food anddrink, great music and K-State football.

Our MRC Luncheon thismonth featured MikeVanCampen, President ofKansas Honor Flight. Mr.VanCampen shared his expe-riences with Honor Flightwith a touching speech andtwo short videos. The MRCalso listened to GuardianMarsha Jarvis and 95 year oldWWII Veteran Bob Leonardrelate their Honor Flight sto-ries. The touching and mov-ing presentation was a per-fect fit with Veteran’s Day.

This year’s Veteran’s DayParade went off without ahitch, the weather was per-fect, Poyntz Avenue lookedgreat, the marching bandswere precise and the streetsfilled with school childrensinging patriotic songs alldown the parade route. OurGrand Marshall Senator JerryMoran and special guestsCongressman TimHuelskamp, State Senator

Tom Hawk, StateRepresentatives SydneyCarlin and Tom Phillips, BGSean Swindell , CSM MichaelGrinston, Mayor John Matta,City Manager Ron Fehr,County Commissioners DaveLewis and Ron Wells, MayorPro Tem Wynn Butler, andCity Commissioners RichJankovich and KarenMcCulloh all enjoyed theparade and Ceremony at theWareham Opera House.

MRC sponsored the oneman show Beyond Glory fea-turing actor Stephen Lang.Lang, an award-winning play-wright and renowned star ofthe screen and stage, por-trays the personas of eightdifferent American recipientsof the Medal of Honor fromWorld War II, the KoreanWar and the Vietnam War. Inaddition to the play itself,many other activities wereplanned including a communitypreshow reception formallyrecognizing and thanking thevolunteer leaders of the 10veterans and military serviceorganizations that serveManhattan's veteran-inclusivecommunity.

Our next MRC Luncheonwill feature Jennifer Dixon,Blair Benz, and Stormy Jonesof Military the ChildEducation Coalition Parentto Parent Team Fort Riley asthey discuss the lives of mili-tary children and their fami-lies at the Holiday Inn at theCampus, Wednesday,December 4th from 11:30amto 1:00pm.
