I Love Manhattan Triathlon
It starts at the River Pond Campground at Tuttle Creek StatePark; taking participants through 750 meters of swim, 20 km ofbike, and 5 km of run throughout the park; it’s Manhattan’snewest triathlon! The race is August 19 and begins at 7:00 am.There is a $60 entrance fee, ($90 relay) and an additional $12fee for non USAT members.

Gold Wing Road Riders
The Manhattan Convention &Visitors Bureau welcomes theGoldwing Road Riders Association toManhattan August 23-25th headquar-tered at the Clarion Hotel!
GWRRA was founded in 1977, and has grown to more than72,000 U.S., Canadian and international members in 53 coun-tries. There are currently 800 active chapters and nearly 4,000volunteer leaders who work with GWRRA to promote safe,enjoyable riding while also working to improve the publicimage of motorcycling.
The Gold Wing Road Riders Association is the world’s largestsingle-marque social organization for owners and riders ofHonda Gold Wing/Valkyrie motorcycles.
Once you join GWRRA, you can participate with as manyChapters as you choose. You decide your own level ofinvolvement and time. Wherever you go, wherever you travel,you're welcomed. GWRRA membership opens doors to friend-ship everywhere you ride! Monthly Chapter get-togethers(often light-hearted exchanges of information at a breakfastlocation) are pleasant, social occasions. There are no expec-tations, riding requirements, elections, politics, required uni-forms or Chapter dues.
While staying in Manhattan the Gold Wing Road Riders will bedoing a light parade for Meadowlark Hills on August 24th at9:00 pm. The public is invited to attend.
The Manhattan Convention & Visitors Bureau assisted thisgroup in a vast site inspection, bid proposal, and organizationof the light parade; offering welcome materials and providinga city welcome upon arrival in Manhattan.

Soldiering On For Disc Golf
Larry Kirk is on a mission. For the second time, he will travel all 50 states inthe Union playing disc-golf courses the entireway. He will play morethan 450 scheduledcourses, plus whicheverones he picks up alongthe way. You can keeptabs on his progress at
soldieringonfordiscgolf.com. Where his previoustrip took 8 years to complete, Kirk hopes this tourwill be completed entirely in 2012, landing him aspot in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Additionally, 4 players from Manhattan partici-pated in the Sunflower Games disc golf tourna-ment in Topeka and medaled! There were bothdoubles, and singles divisions and Manhattanwas represented in each bracket.
Change is coming!With fall approaching, that means pools will soonbe closing for the summer. Official close date forall public pools is August 19- and then it’s backto school!
Kansas River TrailSecretary of the Interior Ken Salazar and KansasGovernor Sam Brownback designated theKansas River Water Trail as a National Water Trailon July 14. This will increase opportunities for out-door recreation along the river and encouragecommunity stewardship of one of the world’slongest prairie rivers.
The Kansas River joins a growing network ofNational waterways that exist throughout thecountry. This designation made the Kansas Riverone of nine National Water Trails designated sofar. The National Park service will work with stateand local partners to help provide resourcesimproving access to the water trail, and promot-ing public use.

Hungry for a Change
K-State’s Movies on the Grass Series kicks off for2012 on August 26. The film is Hungry for Change,and shows keys to good health through food.The film features medical experts on the cuttingedge of nutritional science and powerful testi-monials from individuals who have been sick andoverweight.

Hoo Haw & Laugh onThe Columbian Theatre in Wamego is readyto share their annual production of Hoo Haw!August 3-5, 10-12, and 17-18. This entertainingproduction will feature classic and contem-porary gospel songs, funny antics and a fan-tastic cast.

Job Fair RecapOn June 28th, Alison and Myranda attended the Civilian Jobs Career Fair at Fort Riley.Roughly, 130 Soldiers and family members attended the job fair.There the ManhattanChamber staff received eight resumes and talked with dozens of job seekers.

As summer draws to a close, the MRC looks back on a season filled with amazing mili-tary appreciative and inclusive events that have encouraged our military families toexplore and enjoy Manhattan and all that it has to offer. As fall approaches, we moveto a national stage to have our voices heard in support of our soldiers, their familiesand their needs.
July 26 saw the 5th Annual Kaw Valley Rodeo Military Family Appreciation Night exe-cuted beautifully to a packed house of military families. We distributed over 1,500 freetickets and fed over 300 people at our free pre-rodeo barbeque, graciously hosted byour Blue Ribbon Sponsors: Dick Edwards Ford and McAllister’s Deli along with ourother amazing Community Sponsors: Pepsi of Manhattan,Hi-Tech Interiors, Inc.,Manhattan Regional Airport, Cox Communications,The Association of the UnitedStates Army and the Kaw Valley Rodeo Association. These sponsors made this annual,highly-anticipated and much-enjoyed event possible and we cannot thank themenough for their kindness and generosity!
Looking forward to October, we are in the planning stages of our annual AUSA (TheAssociation of the United States Army) trip to Washington D.C. for their annual meet-ing. This invaluable meeting gives insight and understanding of national soldier issues,family issues and ways to support our military community in an even more impactfulmanner. AUSA is the professional association for soldiers and we look forward to theopportunity to make their advocacy louder and stronger.
