God became a human being. In Jesus, God moved into our neighborhood and lived among us. In the most concrete way possi- ble, God enabled us to get to know him. No more intermediaries—no more proph- ets, no more visions, no more angels— simply God in the flesh. No more second- guessing if we clearly understood God in the Old Testament. Jesus came to show and tell us, “Yes, this is Who I AM. No, I AM like this!” Until Jesus, all people could say was, Don’t you think God is humble? I mean the Creator of the Universe has chosen to be our God. Who are we that He should be mindful of us?” Through show and tell, Jesus settled the question: God is the most humble being in the universe. He did not choose to be born among the rich, the powerful, or the well regarded. He was born poor and grew up among the disre- spected—“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Even among his own village, his family probably lived in the shadow of contempt because of the ques- tionable circumstances of Jesus’ birth. He came to serve not to be served. He came to any and all who would believe in him. He would as easily accept an invitation to din- ner from a well-born Pharisee as from a despised tax collector. He would reprimand His disciples when they tried to limit his availability to the lowest people in society— little children. Telling them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these”—the lowly, the over- looked, the devalued and the insignificant. The personal impact of God coming to earth in the person of Jesus is witnessed in the testimony of John the apostle. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. Writing some 40-50 years after the fact, John still marveled over the tangible experience of being with God in the flesh. We heard it with our own ears, saw it with our own eyes, verified it with our own hands. The Word of Life ap- peared right before our eyes; we saw it happen! And now we’re telling you in most sober prose that what we witnessed was, incredibly, this: The infinite Life of God himself took shape before us. We saw it, we heard it, and now we’re telling you so you can experience it along with us. But as much as those who were able to see, hear, and touch Jesus marveled at the expe- rience, God did not become a human being so we could touch Him but so that He could touch us. To touch us with His pow- er…all who touched him were healed. To touch us with His courage… When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don't be afraid.” To touch us with His life… Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother. cont. pg. 5 “Loving God, Loving People, Serving The World In The Name Of Jesus” SEPT. 2019 A Monthly News Publication For Members And Friends This Issue: Fall Adult Ed...............2-3 Alpha Course…..............3 Wed@West Side...............4 Special Prayer Event….....5 Fall Church Spruce-up..….5 Calendar………................6-7 Men’s Viking Dinner.............7 Women’s Ministry..................8 Men’s Ministry.........................8 Senior Adult’s Ministry….........8 Children’s Ministry...................9 West Side Preschool….......9,11 Missionary Visits………….......10 Deacon Beacon……..…......11 Listening To Jesus By Rev. God became a human being. In Jesus, God moved into our neighborhood and lived among us. In the most concrete way possi-ble, God enabled us to get to know him. No more intermediaries—no more proph-ets, no more visions, no more angels—simply God in the flesh. No more second-guessing if we clearly understood God in the Old Testament. Jesus came to show and tell us, “Yes, this is Who I AM. No, I AM like this!”

Until Jesus, all people could

say was, “Don’t you think God is humble? I mean the Creator of the Universe has chosen to be our God. Who are we that He should be mindful of us?” Through show and tell, Jesus settled the question: God is the most humble being in the universe. He did not choose to be born among the rich, the powerful, or the well regarded. He was born poor and grew up among the disre-spected—“Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Even among his own village, his family probably lived in the shadow of contempt because of the ques-tionable circumstances of Jesus’ birth. He came to serve not to be served. He came to any and all who would believe in him. He would as easily accept an invitation to din-ner from a well-born Pharisee as from a despised tax collector. He would reprimand His disciples when they tried to limit his availability to the lowest people in society—little children. Telling them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these”—the lowly, the over-looked, the devalued and the insignificant.

We heard it with our own ears,

saw it with our own eyes, verified it with our own hands. The Word of Life ap-peared right before our eyes; we saw it happen! And now we’re telling you in

most sober prose that what we witnessed was, incredibly, this: The infinite Life of God himself took shape before us. We saw it, we heard it, and now we’re telling you so you can experience it along with us.

But as much as those who were able to see, hear, and touch Jesus marveled at the expe-rience, God did not become a human being so we could touch Him but so that He could touch us. To touch us with His pow-er…all who touched him were healed.

Following Jesus...Learning and Growing

Begin Sept. 15: Bible Study: The Gospel of Mark

WSS Room 306—Facilitator: Gene Carbaugh The Gospel of Mark is thought to be the earliest written account of the story of Je-sus and likely served as a reference source for Matthew and Luke. Mark was a com-panion in ministry with Simon Peter, and we likely hear Peter’s voice in Mark’s writ-ing. Aimed at a Gentile audience with con-

cise and expressive language and emphasizing action, Mark shows that Jesus is fully the Son of God bringing salvation. Join us this Fall as we explore Mark’s message for the early church and us today.

Women of the Word

WSN Library (Room 6)—Facilitators: Marian Holm, Diane Pratt, Colleen Yahyaoui, Linda Moore

We are beginning a new class this Fall! Come listen, learn, and discuss Jen Wilkin’s new teaching entitled , “Sermon on the Mount.” Tucked at the beginning of Mat-thew’s gospel are three chapters containing Jesus’ longest recorded message: a sermon given to his disciples. In his sweeping de-piction of kingdom citizenship, Jesus utters some of the most familiar passages in all of

Scripture. Most of us have only encountered the Sermon on the Mount in fragments, considering its subdivision as complete teachings in their own right. But what if we navigated these three chapters as they were originally heard—as one cohesive, well-ordered message, intended to challenge us to think differently about repentance, salvation and sanctification? In this 9-week study, we will do just that: seating ourselves on a mountainside to learn at the feet of Jesus, asking for ears to hear and hearts to respond to the teaching of our king. Women of all ages are welcome! We look forward to seeing you!

6) Facilitators: Jan Jacobson & Bev Baird If you are the full-time caregiver of a loved one or the relative of a loved one with Alzheimer’s or other De-mentia OR if you care for a loved one with a chronic, debilitating disease and you need “a break” from the chores and care you provide them, then this group is for you! This group serves as a safe and confidential place to learn and share your thoughts and feelings.

Life isn’t meant to be done alone. Your new friend is just a Life Group away.

Jesus’ love is not generic! It is entirely personal. We be-lieve Life Groups—the simple commitment of sharing the life of Christ with a small group of people (usually 6-12) from your church family—is one of the best ways to grow up into our salvation. Key features of Life Groups include:

Trained leaders who seek to nurture their groups toward growth;

We study the Bible more consistently through fol-lowing and digging deeper into the Sunday Sermon;

We pray for one another; and We laugh, we eat, we listen, we encourage, and we

call one another to grow into the person Jesus has called us to be.

We are looking to form new Life Groups this Fall. If you are interested in joining a Life Group, contact Miranda Smith, Ministry Assoc. of Guest & New Mem-ber Care, at 509.412.2074 or [email protected].

Adult Christian Growth Opportunities Spirit-Filled Living

WSN Sanctuary Facilitator: Rev. Ralph Kieneker Following Jesus is all about relationships, but the most important relationship is our relationship with God. When we choose to follow Jesus as Lord and Savior, the Spirit of God enters our hearts. We now live in the Spirit. It means new outlook, new power, and new purpose. In this

seminar, we are not only going to discover more about the Holy Spirit, but we are going to begin the process of discerning the gifts and calling that the Spirit wants to work in our lives. We will have about 40 minutes of large group teaching and discussion. Then Life Groups (including A2 After Alpha) will

have the chance to meet, pray and grow together. We will also form discussion groups for people who are not yet in a Life Group. We believe that the pro-cess of actively discussing and wrestling through the material will increase our learning. There is no great-er or inspiring opportunity than to commit our-selves to grow deeper in knowing the one true God.

Christ the Lord of Science and Creation

WSN Room 17 Facilitators: various from Flourish Mid-Columbia

Our goal is to give participants an ex-panded view of the Lordship of Christ, equipping them to see

— and defend — the truth that the world is God’s creation, not merely nature; and that science, there-fore, is the study of what the Lord has made. We will explore the meaning and continued relevance of Gen-esis Chapter 1, emphasizing that we as beings, created in His image, find our purpose in Him, and our daily power to carry it out from His presence. This series is organized by Flourish Mid-Columbia, integrating faith, work, and everyday living.

10 Ways to be an Exceptional Parent in a Quick-fix World

together. Parents and grandparents with kids of all ages will find this time productive and fun as we ex-plore how to come alongside God in building a life-time foundation of faith in our kids’ lives. Join us for an entertaining short video with conversation starters and Bible truths by Doug and Cathy Fields, discus-sion, a panel of seasoned parents for Q&A, support, and prayer for one another. Bring your friends and be blessed and encouraged!

Listening To Jesus - cont. It is hard for us to imagine what Jesus’ physical touch meant to people who were never touched because they were unclean, unwanted, and uncared for. The fear of infection, the fear of defilement, the costliness and embarrassment of being cleansed, and most importantly for the Jews, the Law itself prescribed that those who were unclean must be

avoided and even cast out. Jesus bent right down into the gutter, got His hands in the mud. He met people right where they were

at. The grime and mud in His hands became the raw material of the Creator. Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see. Jesus was not afraid of defilement or infection because He was the infectious one. He came to in-fect us with His life and power—the power of an indestructible life.

Jesus met everyone right where they were at, but this is the most important thing: He did not leave them there. To the dirty, He washed them. To the hungry, He fed them. To the lost, He gave direc-tion. To the miserable, He gave joy. To the despair-ing, He gave purpose and hope. To the dead, He gave life. To all who would take His hand, He lifts us up out of the mud and sets our feet on the path of life. This is who Jesus is; this is who God is. He has always done this, and He will always do this. Jesus has settled the issue because though we can-not see Him or touch Him, we can know Him and hear Him and when we take Him at His Word we can see and feel the changes He makes in our lives. Please join us on Sun., Sept. 22, as we begin a new

series of messages called Words of Life: seeking to take Him at His Word and live.

Blessings in Christ, Ralph, one of your pastors

Children & Family Ministry - Sunday School Kick-off Sept. 8

Summer is over and classes are in session. We cur-rently have 122 children enrolled, 6 of which are the recipients of your generous donations to the Marcus Whitman/Deacon Scholarship Program.

Preschool participated in the Back-to-School Marcus Whitman Carnival on Aug. 18. Water table play is an im-portant part of our program. Early hand-eye coordination, social interac-tion, problem solving, improved co-ordination, cause and effect, persever-ance, and early math skills are all en-hanced by spending time scooping

and pouring and filling and emptying. Oh, and did you notice how that boat is now below water? How did that happen? It was gratifying to see former students get excited about the chance to play at the water ta-ble one more time. And with the capable assistance of three lovely ladies–Debbie Cassidy, Joan Swinth,

Trish Tracy–there was a story time area with puppets to assist with the stories.

We are welcoming Collette Bickford to our staff as the Tuesday/Thursday morning 3’s teacher. She brings lots of enthusiasm and experience working with parents to our program as her children are pre-school alumni. All of the staff are adjust-ing to new working relationships as job responsibilities have changed, so your prayers are appreciated.

We are excited that our tree deck now has a slide for this new school year. We’ve even updated our outside dirt-hole kitchen area. Now for some serious mud cupcakes!

Please remember that NO nuts are to be brought into the WS North building as we have several students that would require an Epi-pen should

Missionary Spotlight: Cristina Hernandez

The Missions Committee is pleased to announce a visit from Cristina Hernandez (Sept. 17-27), who is a repre-sentative of the Open Arms ministry in Medellin, Colombia. The Farm (Open Arms Boys Farm) is lo-cated in the mountains of Medellin and serves as a residential and educational shelter for boys rescued from the streets and, typically, from the child sex trade industry. The boys receive medical help, coun-seling, schooling, and Bible study while at the Farm. They learn and practice basic hygiene, practical living skills, appropriate social interactions, and how to build and maintain healthy relationships.

As they approach adulthood, the boys are given an opportunity to choose a career that matches their skill set and personality. Vocational training including apprenticeships and college classes, are provided to prepare them to live as independent and self-supporting men of God. Several boys have become pastors and many are able to marry and maintain a healthy Christian family life. Bible study, Christian

parenting, and marriage counseling are provided at Casa Helena and oth-er Medellin locations.

The 2018 Adult Deputation Team to Colombia stayed at the Farm and met both the resident boys as well as some of the adult “graduates” and

their families. The team was able to work on building repairs, provide daily activities for the boys, and iden-tify ways West Side Church can support the ministry. The most pressing need is to repair and/or rebuild many of the Farm’s older buildings, particularly the

ones not constructed to survive the extreme geologi-cal conditions of the Cordillera mountains. Torrential rains, inadequate top soil, and rocky underlying layers are just some of the unique challenges for any con-struction projects. Improperly laid foundations are literally being washed away with every rainstorm (see Leaning Tower photo below).

Want to know ways you can help? One possible pro-ject would be to financially provide help for housing for a new missionary couple, Daniel and Rebekah Moreno, who plan to live at the Farm to serve as

House Parents. You could also donate or help with repairs to the boys dorm, the kitchen, a small retreat center, or just offer financial help to Open Arms ministry in general.

Cristina, who is originally from Brazil, will be shar-ing Sun., Sept. 22 during all worship services (8:15, 9:45, and 11:15 am). She will also be provid-ing more in-depth information about Open Arms at a Brazilian lunch at 12:45 pm in WS North Narthex (after the 11:15 am service).

If you would like to be included in future Open Arms Projects, please come to the Brazilian Lunch-eon on Sept. 22. You are also invited to an open house for Cristina on Wed., Sept. 18—call Alyson Reich (509.946.5250) for all the details. You won’t want to miss hearing about Open Arms ministry from this dynamic former model.

Missionary Visits This Fall

Amy Schammert - Wycliffe Bible Translators

Amy Schammert, the MK (Missionary Kids) Program Coordinator for Wyc-

liffe Bible Translators in Orlando, will be home for a visit in September. She

will be sharing Sun., Sept. 15, during all worship services (8:15, 9:45, and

11:15 am). There will also be a Missions Lunch for Amy at 12:45 pm in

WS North Narthex (following the 11:15 am service).

Since her last visit in October 2018, she has traveled to Papua New Guinea to

work with Mks for “Refugee 139.” She has completed a graduate-level GEICO training through SPU.

And, most recently, was invited by “Refugee 139” to work with MKs in Mexico.

The Tri-Cities Prison Fellowship team is comprised of men and women from four churches throughout our area. They serve every week of the year; but if you ask them if they have to serve year round to be on the team, you might get a look like, “Are you from Mars or what?” This is because not one of them believes they must serve–they want to serve all the time. They know what a special blessing this is from God and are excited to participate. They experience deep disciple-ship maturing and personal growth, and they find remarkable peace and joy in a place they could not have imagined before they joined the team. Just ask them…they will tell you!! Of course, these team mem-bers take breaks for vacations, special events, illness, but they look forward to returning to their ministry at Coyote Ridge! This is a deeply moving experience of seeing people transformed (ourselves included) before our eyes through the power of the Holy Spirit.

God is on the march at Coyote Ridge Correction Center (Connell) through Prison Fellowship and oth-er ministries. Prison Fellowship began at Coyote Ridge five years ago with one Christian-based class and leader on Tuesday evenings. Today, there is a team of 10-12 men and women, and they will have an even broader, more in-depth presence starting in Oc-tober with Christian-based experiences and classes on Sunday evenings, Tuesday evenings, Wednesday mornings, Thursday mornings and evenings, and Fri-day mornings and evenings. And, a formal one-year Prison Fellowship Academy will begin this October with a special graduation ceremony in October 2020 and will be attended by Prison Fellowship USA staff.

Exciting times brought by God!!! A new annual year-long class called “The Humble Servant” will begin at Coyote Ridge this Fall. Recently, a group of men asked if we would bring a Christian leadership/discipleship program into Coyote Ridge. In August,

we received approval for such a class af-ter we made a special proposal to the Chaplains and Assistant Superintendent. This ministry is for men and women at Coyote Ridge; both will lead classes as volunteers and go into Coyote Ridge ei-ther by themselves or in teams of 2, 3, or 4. There are several classes that are suited for both men and wom-en leaders: 12 Seeds of a Successful Relationship; Alpha; Navigating Your Finances; Inside Out Dad; God’s Story–Your Story, Exploring the Character of God from Genesis to Revelation and the Relevance In Our Life Today; and The Humble Servant. Other classes only for men leaders include one-year classes called Authentic Manhood: Being the Man God Meant You to Be, and Getting It Right: Get-ting to the Truth and Christian Response of Irresponsible and Criminal Behavior.

Additionally, through the Prison Fellowship Angel Tree program, men and women that are incarcerated can have Christmas gifts sent to their children with the incarcerated parent designated as the sender. The gratefulness of this sharing from parents and children left-behind and of the incarcerated can get very emo-tional with unimagined gratefulness. West Side has been combining our Angel Tree program with the Prison Fellowship Angel Tree program for several years now with tremendous success of bringing joy to lives at this special time of year.

West Side supports this ministry with the richest of all resources: disciples of Jesus Christ. Check us out—ask us how you can also join us in being blessed in this special participation with God in transforming the world. Contact Ed Heubach, Jerry Combs, Dan Johnston, Dan Batchelder, Leroy Sutton, Renee Root or Bill Root if you would like to hear more about how you can be blessed in being on mission to this part of God’s world.
