Caribou 

Popularly known as Reindeer,

this deer inhabits the Arctic and

sub-Arctic regions. This is theonly species where both male

and female grow antlers. Theyhave two thick layers of woolly

fur which act as insulators in thefreezing weather. They cover a

distance of over 3,000 milesduring their annual migration to

the Arctic, a feat unparalleled byany other land mammal.

are solitary creatures and prefer to roamalone. They emit a deep bark-like sound

(hence the name Barking Deer ), if theysense danger approaching. This species is

omnivorous, and is known to eat birdeggs along with grass and shoots.

Sambar 

Native to Southeast Asia, this deer is foundin almost all parts of Asia. These deer have

three-tined antlers, which are used to carveknives and handles. Living in forests, these

creatures are easy preys for tigers, leopards,and crocodiles. They stomp their hooves as a

warning signal.

Its name comes from theword "shika" which meansdeer in Japanese language.Its also called Spotted

Deer. It is found all overEastern Asia. During themating season, males utterloud shrill whistles that canbe heard over a mile away.These deer were prized fortheir velvet antlers in Chinaand Taiwan.

Fallow Deer 

Spread all over centralEurope and United Kingdom,this deer prefers to graze inthe open grasslands. Theircoats are brown with anddappled which change to adarker shade in the coldermonths. These deer are verygood jumpers, and can jump

over 2 ft high and 5 ftacross.

Chital 

Occurring in huge numbers acrossthe Indian subcontinent, this deerprefers to stay in herds. They havelyre-shaped antlers, and bawl in aprimitive way as compared to other

deer species. The meat from thisdeer is highly popular as comparedto that other species.
