1st XI Boys’ Hockey 1st XI Boys’ Hockey is the school’s top boys’ hockey team, competing in the top Auckland competition and the second tier national tournament, India Shield.

The team is selected by trial early in the school year. The team practices up to three times per week, Monday and Friday mornings at 6.30am and have fitness training on Friday after school. The season requires a year round commitment, following tournament in late August, the boys have the remainder of term 3 off and start pre-season work in term 4. Games are played on Wednesday evening throughout terms 2 and 3 at locations over the Auckland region, with about half of the games at Lloyd Elsmore Park.

The team has a number of weekends away with annual pre-season tournaments in Hamilton and Tauranga. National tournament is in Napier this year and the team will travel to Australia during the April holidays.

Teacher in Charge is Mr Campbell

Boys Hockey

Boys hockey is a winter co-curricular sport. There are four teams, with the 1st XI being the premier side, the 2nd XI being the supporting team, the 3rd XI being the social team and the under 15 team a development team. The time commitment for students wishing to participate is 1-2 hour long training sessions per week as well as one game per week. Where and when: Term 2 and 3. Venues are turfs across Auckland. Teacher in Charge – Mrs Sima in Kupe

Girls' Hockey U15 Girls Hockey

Macleans has a very proud hockey history with the girls playing a huge part of the schools success. Like with any school sports the development of the girls premier team begins with our juniors and the future is determined by the work done with these teams. While we currently have five under fifteen year olds playing in the 1stXI, most girls will begin their Macleans hockey careers in the Auckland U15 grades. Depending on numbers we can field two Under 15 teams, U15A in the Auckland A grade and U15B in the U15 East grade. While experience is helpful it is not essential and many of our senior players only started hockey when they arrived at Macleans. Players do however need some equipment if they wish to trial and represent the school; a hockey stick, mouth guard and shin pads are compulsory and Macleans junior sides wear the royal blue sports shirts, red skirts and blue socks which are all available at John Russell Menswear in Howick (some 2nd hand uniforms maybe available at the school shop). Hockey fees are $70 (there is also a $20 surcharge for non donation payers) which covers cost for turf hire, coaching and first aid kits.

U15 sides practice twice a week during the season and play on Tuesday evenings at one of the designated Auckland Hockey turfs. U15 Trials are scheduled to be held at our Oliver Rd Turf (Auckland Hockey Turfs) on 19th & 26th of March. To make a school team girls must attend both of these trials.

If you have any questions please see Mr Scott in M12 or Abby Ayson the School Captain of Girls Hockey for 2013. Also have a look at our website on the Co-curricular pages on www.macleans.school.nz. Where and When: Pratice one or two times a week – games Tuesday nights. All practices take place on Macleans Oliver Rd turf and times will be advised at trials. Trials will be held at Oliver Rd (Macleans Hockey Turfs) on 19th & 26th of March. Teacher - Mr Scott – Hillary house

Table Tennis Where and When: Term 2 and term 3. Training is once a week after school from 3.15pm to 4.30pm in G1. Matches are held after school on Fridays either 5.45pm at Gillies Avenue, Newmarket, (A/B grade/experienced players) or 3.45pm at SKC. Transport is your responsibility either from your parents or bus. Muster is Friday 1st March in P6. All Trials will be held later in the term. Teacher: Dr Thomas CRICKET

The school has a team at each level in the junior school i.e. Y9 and a Y10 Team. These teams play on a Saturday morning from 8.30am until 12.30pm in term 1 and term 4. This enables players to play for the school in the morning and for their club if they wish, in the afternoon. There is a Colts team that consists of the top players from Y9 and Y10. These players have trialled and have usually played representative cricket for their region. This team plays in the afternoon.

At the senior level there are three teams for boys and one for girls. 1ST X1 GIRLS this team is selected on ability and plays every Wednesday afterschool. The games are played from 3.30 until 6pm.

IST X1 is the elite team playing in the Premier Division. These players are chosen after trials in term 4 and games played over the summer holidays. 2ndX1 is for those players who did not make the first team but they have a chance to move up into the elite team, if a place becomes available, through consistent excellent performances and showing a total commitment to their team.

Both of these teams play cricket all day on a Saturday.

3rdX1 is for those senior boys who wish to play and enjoy a game of cricket in the morning. All teams have allocated practices and times usually involving at least two afterschool sessions a week.

As games are played either at Macleans or away at other venues it is important parents and caregivers can provide transport if required. Where and when: Saturday mornings term 1 and 4 for juniors, 8.30am to 12.30pm Teacher– Mr Bark

Cycling Club The Cycling Club at Macleans College is split into two parts:- 1. Road Cycling – Mr McGuire-Barnes 2. Mountain Biking – Mr Bunning Road Cycling All road cycling takes place as a team. Juniors ride as teams of 4 and seniors ride as teams of 5 with boys and girls riding separately. Racing takes place roughly every fortnight in terms 2 and 3 and mainly takes place on a Sunday. Fitness and team time trial training starts in term 1 and the minimum commitment for all is to attend an early morning training session once a week, a wind trainer training session one evening a week and a Sunday morning bunch rides. There is a compulsory 4 day training camp held in the Hunua Ranges during the term 1/term 2 holidays immediately prior to racing starting in term 2. The school caters for all levels of cyclist from beginners to NZ Reps and runs a number of junior (and senior) teams to cater for the differing levels. Two paid coaches (Bruce Hunter and Matt Kurtovich) are employed and give an excellent level of training not only on racing but also safety (our foremost concern) and nutrition. We also have several former riders who are at Auckland University who give their time and expertise voluntarily to the club and the sport as mentors. Mountain Biking Macleans Mountain bike Club is part of Macleans Cycling. It operates throughout the year and caters for all levels from novice to NZ Representative. We are fortunate to have a very experienced mountain bike coach, Mr Blaire Woodhead (Parent of one of the club members). Mountain bike training this year will be Tuesday evenings going out from the school, plus training in local forests about once a month at weekends. Mountain bikers are also encouraged to attend the cycling camp in the Hunua ranges during the Easter Break which will cater to both Road and Mountain Bikers disciplines. During the year we enter students in the Auckland Secondary Schools Championships (3 races) and the Winter series (4 races) which take place on Sunday mornings at various forests and country parks in the Auckland Region, and the NZ Secondary Schools Relay in Rotorua. There is also an opportunity for individuals to enter the NZ Secondary Schools individual championships in Levin. Mountain bikers are also encouraged to attend fitness training and rides with the road cycling section of the club, and keen riders can also join outside clubs such as Jaffa kids for extra training and racing opportunities.

Tennis Tennis is played either competitively or socially at Macleans College. Trials and trainings have already begun as the Auckland competition begins very early on. We currently have 8 teams at school – averaging 8-10 students per squad and all grades are represented. We have many tournaments that Macleans College attends in term one and we always do very well in these. Every Saturday for the first 5 weeks of the term our students are travelling all over Auckland to play against other school in their competition grades. Again we do very well in these, placing in the top 10 schools in Auckland. Social tennis - Term 1 is very popular with approximately two hundred students participating and is therefore split into two sessions. Term 4 has historically only about 30 students in total which are mostly juniors as the seniors have examinations. You may have missed your chance to join in Term 1 but are welcome to play in term 4. There is no cost for this activity but you must attend in full PE uniform and bring your own racket. Tennis balls are provided. Where and When: Fridays 3.30 pm to 5pm in the two summer terms. We start training around April once or twice a week until the end of the winter sports season. When winter sport finished our training proper starts. There at least two supervised sessions in the school gym per week plus on-water training on the Tamaki River, Glen Innes either two week mornings or two afternoons per week, PLUS Saturday and Sunday mornings. High achieving crews also attend Maadi Cup (NZ Secondary Schools Champs) at either Twizel in the South Island or Lake Karapiro, for eight days. To be ideal for rowing you must be physically fit, tall and strong, enjoy the outdoors and physical exercise. We also require coxswains (to command the crew and steer the boats) who also, should enjoy the outdoors, physical activity but be of small stature. CO-CURRICULAR – DRAMA PARTICIPATION

Hair and Make-up team The hair and make-up team is an integral part of Drama and performance at Macleans College. The team is called on to do hair and make-up for performances such as the annual school musical, senior and junior productions, dance spectacular and stage challenge. The school provides training opportunities for junior members as well as new senior members. This co-curricular activity usually attracts students who are artistic and have a flair for design and production. The hair and make-up team requires committed and enthusiastic students who are able to come to evening shows on the week of the show and a weekend technical rehearsal before the week of the show. Where and When: Auditorium throughout the year as required, evenings. Teacher: Mrs Bowie and Mrs Mair Backstage Crew What? You are the "Behind the Scenes People". You will be organising the set and props for the school musical during the final rehearsals and the performances. You may also be involved with finding some of the props and making part of the set. Who? You need to be organised, have the ability to move silently and be able to stay quiet when you're in the wings. And look good in black ;-) We will need some strong people but also those who can look after the smaller set pieces and props. Good bits: You get to be involved in the musical and other productions without having to perform on stage; you get to see the musical each night for free; you build up a great team spirit with the rest of the crew. Hard bits: You can't speak when you're in the wings and you have to move carefully in the dark. You also need to have a good memory because if you forget to put an essential piece of set on the stage, it could ruin a whole scene. When? You MUST be available to help at ALL of the final rehearsals and ALL of the performances! The musical is on 4th, 5th and 6th July and 9th, 10th and 11th July. You will also need to come to at least two weekends of rehearsals before this. If you can't attend all these dates, you can't be in the crew. We are also looking for people to help with the senior production in Term 1, week 13 (16th-18th April) with at least one weekend of rehearsals before this. TEACHER: Come and see Mrs Hunt in Hillary or K14 if you're interested or email her on [email protected] FRONT OF HOUSE (FOH) We need people who are reliable: punctuality, honesty, a perfect conduct, a friendly, helpful attitude and tidy appearance are a MUST. Your FOH duties count as a co-curricular activity, provided you work for a minimum of 10 nights. Your job will be to greet people, and take them to their seats, sell and check tickets, make sure doors remain closed between acts. No latecomers are allowed to enter the auditorium, only during the break. You are there for the guests, not for your chats. You will have to prepare coffee and tea, sell soft drinks and sweets, clean up after interval. Stock needs to be counted so that sufficient supplies can be purchased for the next performance. Once this has been done, you may go home. This should be no later than 9-9.30pm. You should be in the auditorium approximately 30 -40 minutes before the show, which usually starts between 6.30pm and7.30pm. Where and when: All year round - evenings Teacher: Mrs Wai

Junior Production The junior production is an opportunity for only year 9 and year 10's to experience all aspects of a drama production. There is the chance to act, work with lighting and help out with make-up and costuming. Auditions usually take place in term 3 and the show takes place early term 4. The daily notices are the way to keep up to date with auditions and rehearsals, but any queries should be directed to Mr Leathem. Stage Challenge Macleans College has achieved huge success with Stage Challenge over the years and are regularly placed in the top three or higher. An entry into Stage Challenge is an original piece of work involving dance, drama and design which reflects the personalities, concerns, hopes, dreams and interests of those who create it. The school forms a team which decides on a theme, designs the performance, selects a medley for the sound track and designs the choreography, sets and costumes. Where and When: term one and two – open to all age groups but entry requires a dance audition. Teachers: Mrs Phipps Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival "Be not afraid of greatness"- exercise your Will power and go for it! The Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival is an annual event which celebrates the work of William Shakespeare through performance. Macleans has been exceptionally successful in this festival and we have had many students selected to attend the Globe workshops in London. Regional competitions are held late in term one , near Shakespeare's birthday (23rd April), with students from local schools performing five or fifteen minute excerpts from one of Shakespeare’s plays. Regional winners perform at the National competition in Wellington over Queen's Birthday Weekend. From there a group is chosen to do a week of intensive workshops in the September holidays before a final group of 24 is chosen to work at the Globe Theatre in London the following year. Open to all students. If you can act, direct or create interesting stage work, then this is for you! Where and When: term one ( and term two if you are successful at the regionals) Teachers: Mrs Shepherd ( K3) and Ms Kempthorne(M10) Theatresports This is an activity for those who like to laugh and generally have a good time. You will learn a range of Theatresports games and get to try out your improvisation skills. If you are not sure what it is google “whose line is it anyway?” and you can see it in action. No experience needed just a good sense of humour! Where and when: Juniors every Wednesday 3.15 to 4.15 in Kupe house commons Teacher: Mrs Irving Tech Crew This involves the hanging of lights and the lighting of the stage and sound during productions and also doing lighting design. This runs all year round and is available to all students. Where and When: Tuesday after school 3.30 til 5. If there is a show on it is evening work. Teachers: Mr Davidson
