Praxair has a full technical and

engineering support service. We

supply and install a wide range of

CO2 storage vessels and

associated equipment, and offer a

comprehensive maintenance

service for those customers who

own their own equipment. By

installing telemetry onto the CO2

storage vessels, Praxair also helps

to manage CO2 stocks and

optimise customer’s deliveries.

Quality assurance /

CO2 specification

CO2 is a tasteless, colourless,

non-toxic, non-flammable,

liquefied gas. It is a very small

part of the atmospheric air around

us (approximately 0.03%) and can

exist in three states – as a gas, a

liquid and in solid form (Dry Ice).

the food and beverage industries.

Praxair is one of Europe’s leading

producers of CO2. Praxair own and

operate CO2 production plants in

Holland, Norway, UK, Germany

and Italy. A key part of Praxair’s

supply strategy is its ability to

transport bulk CO2 between its

terminals across Northern Europe,

and British Isles using one of its

purpose built ships. The ability to

move CO2 quickly around Europe

provides Praxair with its very

strong “Security of Supply”

position.

Praxair’s CO2 for the UK and

Ireland markets is produced at our

plant in Wilton, Teesside, or from

the plant located in Billingham as

well as from our European

production sites, which is

imported throughout dedicated

import terminals on the Thames

estuary in the South, or Teesside

in the North. From our terminal in

Teesside we can also export from

the UK to the other European

terminals. Praxair is the only

company in the UK and Ireland

with this CO2 import capability,

giving us a huge advantage when

customers require secure

supplies.

Before Cleaning

Liquid CO2 is one of the most

versatile of all industrial gases,

with a wide range of applications

throughout the food and

beverage, water treatment,

firefighting and horticultural

industries. Some of the key

applications are:

Food Processing

CO2 is widely used in the food

industry for cooling during meat

processing, crust freezing,

packaging and temperature

controlled distribution. CO2 is

used in modified atmosphere

packaging (MAP) for a wide range

of convenience foods which

significantly extends their shelf life

owing to its unique bacteriostatic

properties.

CO2 can also be used as a more

humane method of anaesthesia

for poultry and pigs prior to

slaughter. Trials have shown that

better quality of meat is achieved

because the bird or animal’s

musculature is relaxed and less

meat goes to waste.

Solvent

Super and sub critical CO2 are

used as a solvent for various

processes, including flavour

extraction such as caffeine and

vanilla.

Horticulture

CO2 enrichment of greenhouses is

an efficient means of improving

the crop yield for fruit, vegetables

and flowers. CO2 can also be

used for the eradication and

control of pests on flowers and

crops.

Industrial

CO2 is used for a wide range of

industrial and safety applications,

for example: firefighting; welding;

tobacco leaf expansion; mould

hardening in the foundry industry;

PPC (precipitated calcium

carbonate) production; de-liming

in tannery operations and as a

carbon additive for lubricants.

Dry Ice production

CO2 is also used to produce

DrikoldTM

, this is Praxair’s trade

name for Dry Ice which is CO2 in

its solid state at -78oC. Drikold dry

ice has a wide variety of

applications, for example:

chilling or freezing food for the

airline catering industry; Dry Ice

Blast Cleaning; transportation of

medical and pharmaceutical

products; and as a “fog” effect in

theatres and nightclubs.

Beverages

CO2 is widely used for

carbonation, packaging and as a

process gas in the soft drinks,

brewing and mineral water

industries.

Significant increases in the use of

CO2 have been seen in the

packaging of beverages in cans

and PET bottles to meet the

growing demand for the “take

home” trade.

pH control for wastewater

CO2 is ideal for lowering the pH

value of alkaline waste water.

CO2 is a more cost effective and

safer alternative than mineral

acids traditionally used,

particularly where bulk CO2 is

already in use on a soft drinks or

brewery site. With CO2 being a

weak acid dosing is more gentle,

and maintaining the pH value at

the required level is also easier

than dosing with a strong mineral

acid. CO2 can also be used for pH

stabilisation in paper making

processes.
