Everyone knows how powerfully our school chaplain affects the lives
our students. Not only is the chaplain a teacher of the truth of God and
minister of the sacraments, but he is also a confidante, spiritual father,
and inspiration to our students. We have been tremendously blessed to
have Fr. Doug Krebs as our school chaplain for the last three years, and
I am deeply grateful for all that he has done for our school and, most
importantly, for our students.
Later this summer, Fr. Krebs will be returning to Rome to study and earn a license in Canon
Law. We wish Fr. Krebs well in all of the ways that he will serve God and His people in the future.
Thank you, Fr. Krebs, for your tremendous work!
Bishop Kagan has announced that the soon-to-be Fr. Gregory Crane will be taking Fr. Krebs’
place. Deacon Crane will be ordained this June and will accompany our students on the Rome
pilgrimage as one of his first duties as a priest. I’ve known Deacon Crane for some time now,
and I am ecstatic that he will be our new chaplain. He will be a wonderful addition to our Bishop
Ryan family.
Finally, as both the chaplain and the president of the school, I have worked closely with
Fr. Fred Harvey, pastor of St. Therese, Church of the Little Flower. Fr. Harvey will also be moving
on to a new assignment in July, and we all owe him a great debt of gratitude for his tireless
work and steadfast guidance of Bishop Ryan as the vice president of the school board for many
years now.
Please join me in praying for Fr. Krebs and Fr. Harvey in their new assignments, as well as for
Deacon Crane as he prepares for ordination and his arrival at Bishop Ryan!
Ash Wednesday Mass will be celebrated at Bishop Ryan on Wednesday, March 6th at 1:45pm.
All are welcome to attend!
In April 2016, I received an email from Bishop Kagan telling me that he was assigning me to be a
chaplain and religion instructor at Bishop Ryan Catholic School. I was really excited about this news
because I had heard so many good things about the school from Fr. Waltz and Fr. Nelson.
The last three years at Bishop Ryan have been the best years of my life. I love this school and all of its
students, who have been very warm and welcoming since day one. The students are very good kids and
they are the best part of our school.
Bishop Kagan has asked me to take a new assignment studying in Rome for the next three years, and I will no longer be
the chaplain here. This was something that took me a while to work through, but it is easier to accept this assignment when I
know the next chaplain is a very good man who I think will do an exceptional job.
I am just so grateful for everyone who is a part of Bishop Ryan. I am going to miss being in the school everyday, especially
the many good students who really are trying hard to be good and holy. God is guiding this school. I will always be grateful
for my time at Bishop Ryan, and I ask that you pray for me as I take my next assignment.
Hi, my name is Deacon Gregory Crane and I am proud and honored to have been named the next
chaplain of Bishop Ryan Catholic School.
I am originally from Minnesota and moved to Bismarck after college to work at the University of Mary.
I then taught high school religion for a year before entering seminary for the Diocese of Bismarck. I spent
two years in seminary in Washington, DC, and I’m now finishing my fourth year of seminary in Rome. This
year I'm in seminary with two Bishop Ryan grads, Jake Magnuson and Deacon Brandon Wolf, and Deacon
Wolf and I will be ordained priests at the Cathedral in June.
I was very excited when the Bishop told me that I would be the next chaplain of Bishop Ryan. I enjoyed my assignment in
Minot two summers ago at St. Leo's and I look forward to returning. Know of my prayers for the whole community, and
please pray for me, too, that I can be a faithful and holy chaplain!
It is with mixed emotions, sadness to excitement, that I share the news that I have been asked by
Bishop Kagan to take a new assignment, becoming the new pastor of Christ the King Parish in Mandan.
My fourteen years in Minot have seen many changes and endured many challenges, both with the
parish of Little Flower and Bishop Ryan Catholic School, but I believe all has happened for the greater
glory of God and His people. There are many in the surrounding area that I have come to know quite well
and consider good friends, having had the opportunity to be their Spiritual Father or working together on
various committees. I will leave Minot knowing that God’s work continues to move forward at Little
Flower and at Bishop Ryan Catholic School, and I will always have a special place in my heart for all the people I have come
to know and love in these communities.
Know that my prayers will continue for all and I ask that you pray for me as I now embark on a new part of my journey as a
priest of Jesus Christ in the Diocese of Bismarck. Peace to all!
