National Audit Office Report (NAO)• Department for Education (DfE) oversight of Special Education

for Young People aged 16 to 25 (published on the 4/11/13)

• Cost of supporting a person with moderate learning difficulty from age 16 to 64 is £2-3m

• Providing learners with skills to live semi independently saves £1m on that figure and progressing them into employment saves another £170,000

• NAO wanted to build on this analysis of lifetime benefits and costs so that the relationship of special education interventions to longer term outcomes can be better understood
