Line Dance Styles Definition. A dance with a repeating pattern of locomotor or non-locomotor steps or movements. After each repetition of the pattern the dancers do a ¼ turn, and repeat the pattern facing the new direction. Basic: Doing the same movement for 8 counts Advanced: Doing a movement for 4 counts, then a second movement to finish the 8 counts. In other words, twice as many different movements in the dance. Also, adding arm movements increases the complexity. Kick ball change, cha cha, sache, grapevine, are more complex than walk, skip, gallop Country/Western Style Funky Cowboy Music: “Funky Cowboy” or “Boot Scootin’ Boogie” by Brooks and Dunn 8 counts. Walk forward R,L,R, tap L heel on count 4 Walk backward, L,R,L tap L heel. 8 counts. Grapevine right, behind, right, bend left knee and kick left foot out to the side (counts and 4) Repeat to the left. 8 counts. Right heel down (counts 1,2), left heel down (counts 3,4), and right and left and right (hold 7-8) 8 counts. Sache’ counter clockwise one and ¼ turn to end facing new wall Repeat…. Country line dance moves: Basic: shuffle, step-brush-knee lift, lasso, knee-side kick, heel taps, toe taps (front, side, back together), step together zig-zag, 3 point turn, create your own basic western style moves. Advanced: Grapevine, Sache’ (step together step), step pivots, cha-cha step, one foot slap inside-outside-inside of foot, jump turns, create your own advanced western style moves! Urban Line Dance Many to choose from (Cleveland Shuffle, Wobble, Cupid Shuffle…..) Cupid Shuffle: Music: Steps: 8 counts: Starting on the right foot, step side with the foot to the right diagonal then bring left together with a slight upper body twist to the right (total of 4 step togethers) 8 counts: Repeat to the left 8 counts: Tap right heel, feet together, left heel, feet together,… 8 counts: Turn ¼ turn rocking and stepping on each count Repeat…

Moves: I like to put on hip-hop music and pull cards from a deck from a program called 1-2-3 Dance, and have the kids try the moves. Created by Tricia Gomez (former Laker Girl). Available from DanceInABox.com) I allow my students to use the cards for inspiration for the hip-hop/urban style dance moves. 70’s Style Stayin’ Alive Music: “Stayin’ Alive” by the BeeGees From Cristy Lane’s Dance Party DVD Steps: 8 counts. Walk back right, left, right, tap left heel Walk forward, left, right, left, tap right heel 8 counts: Turn to face right and walk (exaggerate) right, left right, together (face front), then repeat to the left. 8 counts: kick-ball change (or kick step) two times with right foot kicking. Skater right left right left 8 counts: Point diagonal up to right, and across and down with right index finger a total of 4 times 8 counts: roll arms and shake right hip 4 times touch right foot forward, back, side together and turn ¼ turn Repeat…. 70’s Style Dance Moves: Skater, Pointer, grapevine, step together rolling hands, funky walks, step pivots, turns, funky charleston,, rock step, Kick ball change, create your own moves to fit the style Latin Style The Macarena, Ah Si (from Jen Goreki’s next session), or the one I created… Copa Banana Music: “Copa Banana” by Crazy Frog 8 counts. Step pivot forward, back forward back, forward and together (with right foot) , while rolling hands above head on front and back and in front when feet are together.

8 counts, cross right foot forward, step back on left and cha-cha. Repeat but start on left. (Arms swing down and bend at elbow….) 8 counts. Shimmy forward (step touch forward right, left), back, (step touch back left, right) forward (step touch forward right, left) and turn ¼ turn (left touch right) Latin Moves: Cha cha, sache, sache with a cross front or back, cross step touch, step pivots, roll hands and touch elbow, roll hands above head or up and down, jumps up and back, shimmy, twist, zumba style moves. Advanced: Do the moves for only 4 counts, to make more complex combinations. Songs I use that the kids can choose from: Country Western: Footloose, Life is A Highway, etc…Cotton Eyed Joe (Crazy Frog), Elvira, Achy Breaky Heart, Boot Scootin’ Boogie Urban: Any popular hip hop songs with clean lyrics, I Applause (Kidz Bop), Ice, Ice Baby (Crazy Frog), Who Let the Dogs Out 70’s: Boogie Shoes, Disco Inferno, The Hustle Latin: We No Speak Americano, Conga (Gloria Estefan),
