As I write this, we are looking at a forecast for the first snow of the season in the RVA. If it does snow, be sure and listen to the local news for closure announcements. If Henrico County Schools are closed or if Parks & Recreation activities are canceled, so are we. Let’s hope the weather holds off and does not affect any dances! We only had one chapter dance in January due to the New Year celebrations and over 80 of you showed up at Deep Run. That was a great crowd and we had a lot of fun dancing and doing the Ballroom Boogie with Penny Jesmer during the intermission. Penny is a trainer at the ACAC fitness center on Robious Road and also teaches at Simply Ballroom. We invited her to demo her Boogie workout dance routine in preparation for our exhibitions as part of the “Get Fit” wellness fair at Regency Square on January 24. Your fellow dancers did an awesome job at Regency with over 15 exhibitions and group dances. Did you hear the radio spots promoting our participation? The mall staff was again very pleased at the response to our dancing and the large crowd was very appreciative. I want to extend a big THANK YOU to all of those who danced or came out to support our dancers and to Gabe Pascarella who coordinated our participation at the event. We had several studios represented (Simply Ballroom, Dance Masters, The Dance Space, and Rigby’s Jig) along with a number of independent instructors (Phyllis Harris, John Holcomb, Gwen Glenn). Our own Pat Bryson even taught a Country Line Dance! It was a great experience and another opportunity for us to spread the word about ballroom to a wider audience. Several people picked up passes to attend one of our chapter dances and we hope to see them soon! Speaking of chapter dances… Our next 1 st Saturday Dance will be on February 7 at Brookland. Eleanor Robertson of Rigby’s Jig will be our guest instructor for the evening and will teach a Country 2- Step lesson. While this is not a “ballroom” dance, it is one that we get a lot of requests to do and many of you have expressed interest in learning a few more of the basic steps so you can expand your dance repertoire. Eleanor always does a wonderful job of teaching and this will be your only chance this year for a 2- Step lesson with us as we are only offering it at this dance. You can check the list inside for the rest of the scheduled 2015 classes and who will be teaching. The list of this year’s deejays is also there. The floor at Deep Run was in great shape again at the January dance and we hope to see that continue as the staff there really wants to get it right for us. Bill Irvin returned as our DJ and did his usual great job with the music for the evening. He will be there when we return on February 21 for our 3 rd Saturday Dance. If you haven’t been in a while, please know we have missed you and hope you will come back to dance with us there again very soon. At the January dance we held our biannual election for your Board of Directors. All but one of the current members ran for reelection and we had one volunteer step forward to fill that vacancy. The election was held by acclamation and the slate approved by a show of hands of members present. Returning to the Board for a two-year term are: Phil Sisk, Karen Anderson, Bruce Ripley, Ginny Engler, Gabe Pascarella, Connie Nelms, Margil Coyner, and Diana Donald. Newly elected to the Board is Lee Chase. She replaces Dave McBride who stepped down after several years of wonderful service as an At-Large member and then as Secretary. At the January meeting, the Board reelected the current slate of officers and added Lee as the new Secretary. Please join me in congratulating – and thanking - these wonderful volunteers who do so much for our Chapter and be sure to thank Lee for offering her talents for the current Board. See you on the dance floor!

Tri-Cities News by Sharon Dunn

This is the Tri-Cities Chapter's 10th year of hosting a special dance at The Lee Club, and this is your opportunity to dance in the most elegant ballroom in Central Virginia. We are encouraging you to make your reservations for the “Dance by the Light of the Moon,” dance at Fort Lee on March 14, 2015. This is always a magnificent event with a fabulous dance floor and we look forward to all of you joining us. Please see the Reservation form in this issue to make your reservation online or by using the mail-in reservation form. The Bolero Dance is by far the most regal dance among all of the Latin American styles. Originally, a Spanish dance but modified in Cuba, the Bolero is a slow, smooth and powerful romantic dance. It is a high breed dance with Ballroom lines and techniques, mixed with sensuous and sexy Latin American movements. It can be likened to a slower, dreamier version of Rumba. Last month we had our first of two Bolero Lessons with Phyllis Harris. Since our February Tri-Cities Chapter Dance falls on Valentines Day, Saturday, February 14, you will have a wonderful opportunity to dance and share some of these romantic moves in our second Bolero class. If you do not have a significant other, come anyway, you can mingle and meet new people. The Tri-Cities Chapter is supporting the Mardi Gras “Dance for the Cure, One Step at a Time,” Saturday, February 28, 2015, 7:30 to 10:30 PM, and $10.00 at the door. Dj Joe Beaudet. Location: Prince George Country Community Center. Proceeds are benefiting Relay for Life. Please see the flyer in this issue. For your planning purpose, the following are the upcoming lessons, instructors and DJ’s !

Member of the Month

By Shirlene Howard

Helga Gallahan LOD: It seems such a short time ago that I met you. Had you recently moved to Richmond? My husband Bill and I moved to Richmond in April of 2013, after having lived in Colonial Beach, a small town on the Potomac River east of Fredericksburg, for 39 years. LOD: Tell me about your family. Where do your family members live? We have two sons, Derek and Colin, who live in Richmond as well. That's what prompted our move here after retirement. We have six grandchildren, three boys and three girls, and love being near them LOD: Are you currently employed? If you’re retired, what career did you pursue? Bill and I are retired pharmacists, and we had two independent pharmacies in King George County in the Northern Neck for 37 years. We sold them in 2011. LOD: Are you involved in community service? If so, what piqued your interest in that particular area? For about seven years before moving here, I was a volunteer pharmacist at a free clinic in Colonial Beach. It was a good experience in that there was close interaction with the patients and prescribers. Now Bill and I volunteer with Phyllis Harris at her dance socials at Imperial Plaza, a senior living facility. Those folks are so very appreciative of our efforts. LOD: What is your favorite vacation spot and why?

My favorite vacation spot was Breckenridge, Colorado, for skiing, but unfortunately I haven't done that since my knee replacement.. I think Colonial Beach will become a place to go since we just finished renovating a small house on the river that we own there. Bill has a boat and enjoys the water. LOD: Other than dancing, what hobbies do you have? My other hobbies include knitting and crocheting, flower gardening and taking care of my landscape plants, and reading. LOD: Is there something about you that people don’t know that would surprise and interest them? Most people don't know that I was born in Berlin, Germany, and that my parents and I immigrated to the US when I was a little girl. English is actually my second language; German was always spoken in the home, so I grew up bilingual. LOD: How long have you been dancing? I have been ballroom dancing for about 12 years, although there was a period of about two years during which I didn't dance much. I came to ballroom dancing after having done lots of line dancing and country western partner dancing. Because I had a partial knee replacement in 2002, my orthopedic surgeon suggested lower impact dancing, hence the switch to ballroom. It was a good change because ballroom dancing became an activity that is fun and challenging and one that Bill and I do together. LOD: Have you taken both private and group dance lessons? We take both group and private lessons and find that each has advantages. Group lessons are fun in that I interact with different partners and can learn interesting patterns, but private lessons help to point out and correct my personal mistakes in dancing, making me a better dancer. Even small corrections can be very helpful. LOD: What are you favorite dances, and why? My favorite dances are rhumba, cha cha, and West Coast swing simply because I find them fun and enjoyable to dance. Night club two-step is a new dance that Bill and I are working on because it wasn't offered at our previous studio. LOD: If you could point to one thing that has been the most beneficial in improving your dancing, what would it be? The one thing that has been most beneficial in improving my dancing is trying to add proper technique. Even though it may get tedious at times, it can make such a difference in the quality of a dance. My dance goal is to keep improving as a dancer and a dance partner. LOD: What is the incident in your dance history that makes you most want to laugh? The funniest moment in my dancing happened just recently. Bill and I were practicing the Halloween tango formation dance with the group at Rigby's shortly before the

Page 9: Line of Dance - USA Dance (Richmondusadancerichmond.org/.../february-2015-line-of-dance.pdfFebruary 2015 Line of Dance Vol 30 Issue 2 News from the Richmond and Tri-Cities Chapters

performance and he flipped my black wig off with the stem of a rose! It landed on the floor in front of another dancer and we all had a good laugh. Needless to say, I made sure that wig was pinned on tightly for the actual performance! LOD: If you could have a private dance lesson with a “super-pro”, what dance would you work on? If I were to have a private lesson with a professional dancer, I would want to work on rhumba. LOD: Do you have any suggestions for new dancers? My suggestions for new dancers are to have fun and don't try to dance in athletic shoes! LOD: Complete this sentence: Happiness for me is……… Happiness for me is sharing activities with my grandchildren: reading to them, playing games, baking cookies, attending their ballgames and recitals. Our seven-year-old granddaughter Nell was the black lamb in the recent Richmond Ballet performances of The Nutcracker. She had actual choreography to follow and performed seven times. We thought she was great: she smiled at the audience and seemed very comfortable in her role (do I sound like a proud grandmother??) She's taking ballet right now, but ballroom may be in her future! LOD: What are the attributes of a good leader and follower? A good dance leader gives definite but subtle leads at the right time and a good follower can read these leads and respond beautifully. I wish I could say I'm a great follower, but I'm working on becoming one….it may take a l-o-n-g time. LOD: It is always fascinating to get to know our USA Dance member better. Thank you for sharing your life and your ideas with us.

Wheelchair Dancing Those who attended the Tidewater New Years Eve Dinner Dance on January 1st, saw an incredible demonstration of wheelchair dancing by Aubree Marchione & Nick Scott. They were the first couple to ever represent the USA in a World Paralympic Dancesport Championship, and are the #1 couple within the U.S. for wheelchair dancing. They have performed for Arnold Schwarzenegger, USA Dance Nationals, a Dancing with the Stars charity event, Shriners Hospital and many more. Aubree has choreographed national and international dance commercials, television shows and feature films. Nick is a professional bodybuilding champion and sponsored athlete. Together they are featured in the 2012 feature film, Musical Chairs. The mission of American DanceWheels Foundation (ADF) is to make a significant contribution to the lives of

individuals with ambulatory disabilities by providing the social, rehabilitative, and competitive activity of Wheelchair Ballroom and Latin Dance to partnerships comprised of one seated and one standing dancer. You can imagine our surprise when we saw a couple at Regency Square Mall on January 24th, watching our demonstration of East Coast Swing, following some of the steps! I introduced myself to this young couple and told them about the demo we had seen in Tidewater, and encouraged them to “google” ADF. By coincidence, they were scheduled to attend a dance the following week.

Ballroom Boogie

At Deep Run on January 17th, Penny Jesmer, from ACAC Fitness Center, taught us two routines she has created using ballroom steps in an exercise program. Penny has named these routines “Ballroom Boogie”, and her enthusiasm brought a large number of dancers to the floor, as you can see. Our favorite one, seen above, was posted on YouTube

so we could practice it at home before performing it at Regency Square Mall the following Saturday.

Speaking of Regency Square, here are the performers

New Membership Information Effective 1/1/2015 National has set up their membership processing system to allow a social dance member whose membership has lapsed for a period of time to renew and have their expiration date automatically roll forward one year from their date of payment. This should reduce confusion for our members who have been away from dancing for a time and are again reactivating their membership. Condolences to Mark Kunze, who lost his mother recently

Watch for events during 2015 sponsored by the Richmond Chapter to help

celebrate USA Dance’s 50th anniversary
