Principal’s Message
Book Character Parade
We were lucky with the weather and managed to hold our annual Book
Character Parade this morning. Even the teachers dressed up to
celebrate their favourite book characters! Thanks to all the students
who dressed up and to the parents/carers for organising the costumes.
We had amazing superheroes, Wally, Wimpy Kids, Thing, Dorothy and
Dinosaurs, just to name a few characters! Enjoy the photos that appear
later in this week’s Lines. Thank you to Mrs Renee Chapman for
coordinating this event.
English Classes for Adults
Mrs Juliette McDuie Ra, one of our EALD teachers, has been holding
English conversation lessons before school for our adult community
members. They have been enjoying their time together and improving
their English skills. The topic this week was fruit and vegetables and
they even went on an excursion to the school’s vegetable patch!

KL Assembly
The students in KL showed their improvement in their drawing skills from Term 1 by replicating a portrait
of themselves. It was wonderful to see how much more skilled they are now! They sang ‘I Feel Better
When I’m Dancing’ and entertained us all.
5K Assembly
Students in 5K shared their classwork in a novel format in yesterday’s assembly. They presented their
item as a news report and showcased their knowledge of urban places in Geography, emergency
procedures in PD/h/PE and Fantasy Writing in English.
2018 Maths Olympiad Results
This year we had two teams of talented Stage 3
mathematicians participate in the 2018 Maths
Olympiad competition. These 70 students
completed lessons with Mr Smith and Mrs Rivera,
as part of Stage 3 problem solving groups, as well
as taking part in five challenging problem solving
tests. Well done to all students for their
enthusiastic participation and determination to
improve their mathematical skills!
Our students performed extremely well with 15
participants scoring in the top 25% of the
program. We also had nine of our students score
in the top 10%, and two, Ian Y and Amita C,
scoring in the top 2%! Team A scored in the top
25% of all teams competing. Congratulations to all
of our students who received patches, pins and
achievement awards at this week’s Years 3-6 Assembly.
2018 Lindfield PS Summary of NAPLAN Results
Congratulations to students and staff on these outstanding results. This year, the results must be viewed
with some caution as online testing and tailored testing was introduced with around 500 schools across
the state participating in this modified testing environment. We were one of these schools. The online
platform was well received by our students and many of our students were able to take advantage of the
tailored testing that removed the ceiling effect allowing students to attempt more difficult questions.
EALD Afternoon Tea
Thank you to the parents and carers who attended the EALD (English as an additional language or
dialect) afternoon tea. It was lovely to see the community atmosphere and the friendships being made
and strengthened. Many thanks to our EALD teachers Ms Lynn Forster, Mrs Juliette McDuie-Ra, Mrs
Judy Smith and Mrs Hedy Allen for organising this event and sharing their knowledge. We are a
multicultural school representing over 49 languages.

Book Parade
Our students looked fantastic today in their book character costumes! As you can imagine it has been a
wonderful day for them to reflect on all the exciting characters that they read about in books. Reading
every night to your child, no matter their age, is a great way to build vocabulary knowledge, bond with
your child and discover all the magic and adventures that books have to offer. Keep reading!

High School Transition
Students heading to Killara High School and Chatswood High School in 2019 were lucky enough to meet
with staff as part of our Transition to High School Program. Our Year 6 students met with other students
going to the same school and had the opportunity to ask the high school staff questions about clubs,
sports, subjects and routines. They are excited about the next chapter in their lives.

Work on Display
Anaphylaxis at Lindfield Public School At Lindfield Public School in 2018, we have a small number of children with a potentially life threatening
allergic reaction. They are found across our school from Kindergarten to Year 6.
How can parents help these children?
If possible, choose alternative sandwich spreads to peanut butter and Nutella. If you have
no alternative, inform your child that these foods can trigger an anaphylactic reaction.
Reinforce the school’s NO FOOD SHARING message.
Please note, no students are allowed to bring
glass bottles to school for safety reasons

A warm hand grasped around my ankle, the cream colour camouflaged into the sand. The Sand Orcs
were attacking. I drew my sword and diced the monster’s arm off. I’m Kevin, the leader of the gelation
empire. The hazelnut sand orcs emerged from the land beneath us. They wore silver beaten armour, a
celestial bronze blade in hand and sand dripped down the sides of them. My army and citizens were not
armed, we were to lose this battle, one by one the orcs were picking off my people. Not even I could
defend us or win the fight. I fled the castle on my own two feet, leaving my beloved kingdom and people
to perish to the sand orcs, this was my safest option.
The crimson colour of the dusk sunlight slowly sank beneath the earth. The cool desert night’s breeze,
soft as a feather, blew across my face. I could smell defeat, almost as if I could hear the cries of my
people dying. My foot sank into the sand like it was a trap. I drew my sword.

There was an enormous black hole. It looked as if it had been created by a giant hammer that was hit by
a really strong Tantil.
“This hole is really deep, Rodent Master” said Felicity. Felicity was the most beautiful Tantil in the whole
town. She had midnight blue hair, emerald green eyes, and a sweet and polite smile. However, her
usually smiling face was set in a worried, anxious expression. Rodent, no matter how lazy he was, could
not bear to hear Felicity like this.
“It’s going to be alright. What happened?” Rodent asked.
“So mum was cooking, then we heard a grinding noise we had never heard before. So then she walked
over to investigate the sun power line. Then we felt the ground shaking and mum just dropped into the
hole!” Felicity explained, while tears slid from her bright green eyes.
“Was the hole already there before everything, ummm… everything happened, I mean? Rodent asked,
puzzled.
“Well not really. The floor was only cracked open when the floor shook, then it just stopped,” Felicity said
sniffing. “And I think there is only one way to get mum out of the hole, and it is to drop in too.” Felicity
continued.

Sirens blared, lights flashed, we ran. Adrenaline raced through my body and I turned and saw my mated
by my side. We hopped a rusty old fence. I could hear cops shouting. Gaping faces peered at us from
the gathering crowd. The still night was pierced by blue and red lights. Sirens from the bank made my
head hurt. The sack on my back seemed to be getting heavier, but still we ran. My lungs burnt and my
throat seemed to be closing up. I heard a yell as another policeman joined the chase.
We ran onto the main road, sliding to a stop. We were surrounded, sirens blared, lights flashed. We were
cuffed and lead to a blue and white van.
My lab is like another world. My mind floats to my work bench scattered with plans of future projects.
Suddenly in my minds’ eye I am standing in front of a ship. Confused, I made myself move forward using
the dream manipulator I had created. This wasn’t my creation, the thrusters were anti-gravity meaning
they used magnets to repel the earth’s magnetic field. I was astounded by the craftsmanship. Suddenly,
the ship burst to life. I tried to shake myself awake, but was unable to grasp reality.
“Deven!” my eyes snapped open. It was my social worker, “Deven, you must be tired, we should head
back.”
I rubbed my eyes and it was true, I was tired. Again, I glanced out the window. There was a flash of light
as the ship I saw zoomed across the sky, I blinked but it was gone. Yeah, I thought, I must be tired. I
walked out of my cell and headed back to my lab where my inventions were waiting.

LINDFIELD LAPS - SAVE THE DATE! 25 NOVEMBER
Join us for the pool’s major fundraiser of the year. We need the whole school community involved –
students, ex-students, parents, teachers and friends of LPS.
How does it work? A team of swimmers complete as many laps of the pool as they can in 40 minutes.
There is no minimum or maximum number of laps that each team member may swim.
Who can be in my team? Anybody! A team has a maximum of 5 members and can be your friends,
mum, dad, grandparents, aunt, uncle, siblings…
Do I need to be a good swimmer? No! We’ve had young ones on noodles, fabulous grandparents and
everyone in-between. It’s about having fun with friends and family and raising much needed funds for our
school pool.
See next week’s Lindfield Lines for details on how to sign up.

Halloween Spooktacular comes to Maple Playground!
All of our fantastic Bands joined forces to bring a spooky vibe to Maple Playground last week. Well done
to all our ghoulish musicians on a fun and inspiring performance for our K-2 students - we are sure many
of them are now looking forward to signing up for Junior Band in Year 3!
Great opportunities to join the Band Committee in 2019!
If you enjoy seeing how music enriches your children’s lives, please consider applying for the positions
vacant on the Band Committee next year - Treasurer and Instrument Coordinator Assistant
(ICA). The ICA role will involve shadowing our current Instrument Coordinator for the next 12 months
with a view to then taking on that role in 2020. This does not require any previous experience and is an
excellent opportunity to contribute to the Band Program whilst receiving hands-on training and support
from our current Instrument Coordinator who will be leaving LPS at the end of next year.
Our amazing program cannot exist without the help and support of parents - if you think you can
contribute in either of these positions, please contact us on the Co-Convenors email below to discuss
what the roles entail in further detail. We warmly welcome all expressions of interest.
