Welcome

Welcome—or Welcome Back—to Community Education at GCCThis is the last time I will be communicating with youthrough the Lifelong Learning Guide, but you will continueto see me in the community as I pursue other long-awaited opportunities. In April of 2015, I will step awayfrom the position of Dean for Community Education atGCC, a position I’ve held in one form or another sincethe fall of 1999. In that time we’ve more than doubled thenumber of titles we offer and the number of students weserve, from just under 2000 students in 1998 to nearly4000 last year. Likewise the breadth and scope of whatwe offer has increased to incorporate a much broaderrange of workforce development titles. Therefore, I’m veryhappy that effective April 1, Alyce Stiles, currentlyDirector of Workforce Development at GCC, willbecome the Interim Dean for Workforce Developmentand Community Education. Under her leadership, thecomprehensive mission of the office will remain thesame—to offer our community the widest possible rangeof compelling, high-quality and useful workshops andtrainings with some of the area’s most talentedinstructors. Please check out the many communityeducation and workforce development options in thisnew edition of the Guide, and thank you for yourcontinued support.

Here’s to your lifelong learning.

Bob Barba, Dean for Community Education

How to use this Lifelong Learning GuideThis guide is arranged in sections, by category. In many casesclasses/workshops that apply to several categories are cross-listed in each relevant section. Each section/categorycorresponds with a color:

Workforce Development, pgs. 7-12. This section is made upof trainings designed primarily for working people who arelooking to enhance their on-the-job skills, gain access to anew field or learn a new aspect of their current field. Health Care, pgs. 13-16. This section is made up of classesand workshops designed for the very industry-specific needsof aspiring and current health care professionals. Manyclasses are approved for mandatory continuing educationalrequirements, while others provide pre-licensure or pre-certification preparation for those looking to enter a healthcare field.Personal Enrichment, pgs. 17-20. This section includesworkshops and classes in areas such as Art, Dance,Computers and others that people take primarily forenjoyment and self-development. In many cases these classesserve other purposes as well, but they are primarily for self-enrichment.Blended Classes, pg. 21. These classes and workshops areoffered in collaboration with GCC academic departmentsand combine credit-free students from the community inthe same classroom learning experience with GCC for-credit students. Online Learning, pgs. 22-23. Courses in this section are alldelivered via the internet, although some include textbooksand other materials. Most are asynchronous, that is you cando the work at any time. A few are synchronous, whichmeans that you have to “attend” your online session “live” ata set time. All require an internet connection.

Please note: There are no day or evening workshops on Mon. May 25, Memorial Day, or Friday, July 3, Independence Day (observed).
