Before a butterfly starts its metamorphism into a

butterfly it is a caterpillar!

1st Stage- THE EGG2nd Stage- CATERPILLAR

3rd Stage- CHRYSALIS/PUPA4th Stage- BUTTERFLY

It takes about a month for the adult butterfly to develop (from

egg to pupa to adult).

The life span of the adult monarch is different, depending on the season it becomes a butterfly. Adults that come out of the pupa in early summer have the shortest life spans and live for about two to five weeks. Those that come out of the pupa in late summer survive over the winter months. They live about 8-9 months.
