Once the sample reaches the lab, an array of tests are conducted on the maternal blood, cord blood & cord �ssue. Depending on the outcome of the tests the sample may be quaran�ned or rejected. A�er tes�ng, the cord blood & cord �ssue are taken into a state-of-the-art clean room wherein skilled technicians process the samples using utmost care and adhering to interna�onal quality standards such as those prescribed by the AABB (American Associa�on of Blood Banks).In brief the stem cells from cord blood are harvested using a red cell deple�on method aided by a chemical called “Hespan” which helps to remove most of the red blood cells. The cord �ssue is washed, minced and put into �ssue culture for extrac�ng a pure mesenchymal stem cell popula�on.Once the stem cells are extracted a cryoprotectant (DMSO) is added to it prior to freezing. Freezing is accomplished using a “controlled-rate freezer”, which gradually freezes the cord blood over a period of approximately one hour..

LifeCell uses special,compartmentalized cryo-bags to store your baby’s precious cord blood stem cells. The bag includes a 20ml and 5ml por�on, and three segments for tes�ng. The cord �ssue stem cells are stored in two 5ml cryo-vials, which have an integrated segment for tes�ng. The stem cell bags and vials are overwrapped for added protec�on to avoid cross-contamina�on. Then the bags and vials are housed in protec�ve casse�es and boxes, and placed in liquid nitrogen storage vessels for cryogenic preserva�on at -196°C. Our storage condi�ons are closely monitored for security and temperature. The facility is equipped with a 6000 Litre tank for maintaining con�nuous supply of liquid nitrogen, and also has automa�c kick-in of diesel generators in case of power failure. It is believed that stem cells can be successfully stored for decades together in a cryo-preserved form. A recent study of cord blood at Indiana University demonstrated its viability a�er 15 years of cryogenic storage. Moreover, our technology partners Cryo-cell Interna�onal have stored cord blood cells for over 18 years.Un�l the child a�ains the legal age, the parents, as the child’s guardians have control over the stem cells. Upon a�aining the legal age the child will possess the rights to his/her stem cells.

If the stored cord blood stem cells are required for transplant, the client can retrieve the sample by submi�ng a retrieval request from the transplant physician. Necessary HLA typing test is done for the recipient for ensuring a perfect match. The cells are then transported in a special container called “dry shipper” for shipping the frozen sample to the stem cell transplant center. The dry shipper is filled with liquid nitrogen to maintain the cord blood stem cells at less than -150°C during transport.Thawing of the sample is performed under strict guidelines to ensure the highest viability of stem cells recovery a�er the thaw.You are not required to pay for retrieving the stored sample since it belongs to your baby. However you would be required to bear the cost of shipping and handling, and service charges.

STORAGEPROCESSING RETRIEVAL

Cord blood is collected from the umbilical cord immediately a�er the baby’s birth and is drawn into the blood collec�on bag that comes in the kit. The mother’s blood will also be collected during this �me to be tested for certain infec�ous diseases as required by regula�ons. The baby’s cord blood and mother’s blood are then labeled and packaged in the kit box provided. Once the umbilical cord blood is collected a specified length of 10 to 25 cms of the umbilical cord is cut and collected in the cord �ssue collec�on containers. Your obstetrician/gynecologist or the hospital paramedic staff can perform the collec�on. In case you require assistance in the collec�on process you would have to inform us in advance of the expected date of delivery to enable us to depute a paramedic staff for the collec�on. This collec�on process is simple, safe, painless and harmless to both the child and the mother. This procedure can be performed with either vaginal or cesarean sec�on deliveries, and the en�re process takes less than 10 minutes a�er the baby is born. Upon comple�on of collec�on, the cord blood and cord �ssue samples are packed in the collec�on kit box as per the instruc�on provided and safely dispatched through designated special courier service to LifeCell Laboratory.

On understanding your interest, our tele-calling execu�ve will get in touch with you and provide you all required details on the concept, the process for enrollment along with pricing op�ons. You can also insist on a visit by a rela�onship execu�ve to your residence to elaborate the details in person to you and your family members and provide all suppor�ve materials.

You can enroll online instantaneously using your credit card, without going through the process of manual cheque payments. Our tele-calling execu�ve will guide you through the process of online enrollment, which is simple, safe and fast.

Once you decide to preserve your baby’s cord blood stem cells you will be required to fill in the enrollment and agreement forms and make necessary payment based on the pricing plan you choose. The pricing op�ons are listed in a separate sec�on in this brochure. You will receive an official confirma�on of the enrollment once the payment and these forms reach our laboratory.

Subsequently, you will receive a cord blood collec�on kit, which contains a set of materials required for collec�on of cord blood along with an instruc�on manual. Please check the kit contents and read through the instruc�on manual thoroughly. Please ensure that you carry the kit, frozen gel packs and all related documents to the hospital / nursing home while going to the hospital for delivery. On reaching the hospital, place the gel packs in the deep freezer immediately.

Inform your doctor well in advance about your decision to preserve your baby’s cord blood stem cells and take your doctor’s consent to collect the cord blood at the �me of delivery. In case your hospital / doctor is unable to perform the collec�on please inform us at least a week in advance to enable us to depute our paramedic staff..

Contact our 24x7 Helpline while you move towards the hospital for the delivery and provide them the complete details - Name, CRM No., Contact No., Hospital and Doctor. The execu�ve will ensure that the paramedic staffs reaches on �me in case you have asked for the same earlier. They will guide you through the collec�on, packing and dispatch process in case the hospital is performing the collec�on.

Fill in all the documents of the kit box and ensure all relevant informa�on is provided. Please re-pack the kit box as instructed and ensure that the frozen gel packs are put back in the kit box while sending the collected sample to LifeCell laboratory. Please call LifeCell’s courier service or the Helpline service to pick-up the collected sample.

On receipt of the sample at the laboratory, the sample once found fit for processing is then subject to a series of tests and subsequently processed for harves�ng stem cells. The extracted stem cells of the baby are preserved cryogenically at -196°C in a high security, environment controlled, secluded area for poten�al medical use in the future.

You will receive the preserva�on cer�ficate from our laboratory confirming the storage of the stem cells with a detailed lab report for your records. Preserve this cer�ficate safely and please ensure to quote your CRM No. in all your future communica�on and updates.
