Life Threatening Emergency “Code Blue”In the Event of a Cardiac Arrest (Staff or Child)

1. If you find a person who is not breathing, has no pulse, or is choking, announce a “Code Blue” by making an ALL-CALL #2000, do not make announcement until the phone displays the word “connected”). Say “Code Blue” and give your exact location three times (3X). Call 911 from any telephone by dialling 9 and then 911. Stay with the victim until help arrives.

2. The secretary will:

Upon hearing the “Code Blue,” announce "Everyone, please stay where you are until further notice." Maintain communication with personnel at the code location.

3. The Code Blue Team will respond to the location immediately. The Nurse will direct the code: If not already done, call 911 from any telephone (dial 9, then 911). Call for the Automated External Defibrillator (if available), and initiate CPR as needed. Note: the AED

has been upgraded and may be used for children under age 8 and weighing less than 55 lbs. Two sets of electrodes are in each AED - adult electrodes and paediatric electrodes (pink).

Follow American Heart Association guidelines for use of AED and CPR. Give details of the emergency to the Emergency Management System (911)/secretary. Bring oxygen and emergency information from the nurse's office to the nurse. Go to the main entrance to direct emergency personnel to the code site. Relieve CPR when necessary. Direct traffic inside the building.

4. Designated personnel will provide classroom coverage for Code Blue Team Members.

6. The Principal (Head Teacher in principal’s absence) or central office administrator will handle media inquiries.

7. While the nurse is attending to the emergency, Designated Individual (main office) will monitor the health room.

8. When the code is over, the Nurse will notify the Secretary who will announce, "The Emergency is over."

According to new 2016 CPR guidelines:

In October, 2016 the American Heart Association issued new guidelines for the performance of CPR. The sequence is:

1. Check for unresponsiveness and lack of breathing or abnormal breathing. 2. Activate emergency response (call 911 in the US and Canada). 3. Perform 30 chest compressions - push hard and push fast in the center of the chest at a rate of 100-120 per minute.

Press down 2”; press hard and fast!4. If you are trained give 2 ventilation and then alternate 30 compressions with 2 ventilations. 5. If you are not trained in ventilations continue with chest compressions.

Anaphylaxis and the EpiPen Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening, systemic, allergic reaction. Possible causes include insect stings, medications, food, and immunizations.

An allergic reaction can occur quickly in susceptible individuals….as quickly as 15 minutes or less. If symptoms of anaphylaxis (given below) are seen, assistance must be given IMMEDIATELY. For severe reactions, an EpiPen should be given and 911 must be called. Call nurse (ext. 2005) and call office (ext. 1969) to report a “Code Blue” if symptoms of anaphylaxis are seen. Parents, of course, will be called as soon as possible.

Symptoms of Anaphylaxis:Anxiety, Agitation or ConfusionFlushed Face or Pale FacePalpitations, Sudden Headache“Itching All Over” or HivesCoughing or Sneezing (Prolonged)Difficulty Breathing or Wheezing; Difficulty SwallowingNausea, Vomiting, Abdominal PainSwelling of Face, Eyes, Lips, Tongue, etc. Symptoms of Shock: Unconsciousness, Unresponsiveness, Seizures

If you are uncertain whether to administer the EpiPen and symptoms are mild and there are no breathing difficulties, wait and observe. Take student to nurse or call the nurse (ext. 2005) for consultation and assistance.

Mild Reactions of insect bite/sting (no need for EpiPen): Swelling of the extremity, itching at and around the site, pain.

Use of Epi-Pen1. There are two doses of EpiPen: The EpiPen Jr. is for students 66 lbs or less. The regular EpiPen is for

those over 66 lbs. Read label to be sure you have correct dosage.2. Be sure student is lying down and, if possible, have another adult hold the thigh for injection.3. Pull off the blue safety cap.4. Place orange tip on thigh at right angle.5. Press hard into the thigh until you hear a click; hold for 10 seconds.6. Keep the student calm and inactive until help arrives.7. Call 911, nurse, and main office as specified above.

Staff Responsibility in a Medical or Physical Emergency

1. Contact the school nurse at ext. 2310.

2. Give the nurse a description of the nature of the injury or health problem and the individual’s name. Think of this call as being similar to a 911 call.

3. Stay with the child or adult until help arrives. Do not move anyone complaining of neck or back injuries.

4. Give assistance to the nurse as needed: follow “Code Blue” procedures if it appears to be a life threatening situation.

5. If an ambulance is needed, Call 911 (press 9 for an outside line, then press 911) and give them the following:

Due to the fact that these events are not planned and we can’t possibly have everyone’s schedule memorized, those who can respond, should. At that time, it will be decided who should stay and who may return to their duties while remaining on call for team trade-offs if needed. Ideally, the response team should consist of three members and no more than five unless team trade-off is necessary due to duration of event and strength of client.

*The school nurse should be kept informed in the event of injury to staff or student.

Intruder ProceduresNotification

1. All Staff: In the event a staff member notices a suspicious person, immediately get to a phone to make an ALL-CALL #2000, do not make announcement until the phone displays the word “connected.” Make the following announcement three times: “Code Red, Intruder, and location.”

2. Office: In the event the office staff initiates the intruder procedures, one of the secretaries will press the panic button. The panic button is designed to call 911 and will trigger the following announcement: “Red Alert, siren sound, intruder, intruder, intruder.” The announcement will repeat until it is deactivated.

1. Upon hearing an intruder ALL-CALL, one of the office staff members will press the panic button. The panic button is designed to call 911 and will trigger the following announcement: “Red Alert, siren sound, intruder, intruder, intruder.” The announcement will repeat until it is deactivated.

2. Another office staff member will secure the office area.

Cafetorium -secure doors. Students and staff remain in the cafetorium away from doors and windows (if possible). Students should sit on the floor under the tables. Lights out/be silent.

Recess - (outside the building) staff and students should organize themselves quickly and wait for additional instructions/directions.

Hallways/Other - Students and staff not in a classroom at the time a code red is called should seek out the nearest available area and hide (i.e. classroom, restroom including staff restroom, cafetorium, offices or evacuate).

Inform

Evacuate

Four rally points have been identified as locations where students and staff should report to should they evacuate the building during a code red.

Rally Point 1: Back playground area between the two basketball courts.Rally Point 2: Side of school opposite the parking lot. Students and staff should be away from the building preferably beyond the trees just outside the rear stairwells to both A and B wings.Rally Point 3: Front grassy island to the left of the school as you exit from the front main entrance. Keep students in the middle of the island and away from the driveways.Rally Point 4: Side of building near parking lot. Keep students beyond parking lot (utilize retention area if necessary).

Intruder Alert is Over

Fire Drill ProceduresStaff Responsibilities

Thoroughly acquaint yourself with your assigned fire exits (color-coded fire drill map located on the wall by every classroom door) and the

location of the nearest fire extinguishers.

Be sure your students know the location of their fire exit and all other available exits to use as alternate routes.

ALL PEOPLE IN THE BUILDING MUST EXIT THE BUILDING. Any unsupervised students and all visitors must join you and exit the building. A student who is not with her/his class should join another class and tell that teacher her/his name and homeroom teacher’s name. Never re-enter the building!

All windows and classroom doors are to be closed when leaving the room. Lights are to be left on.

Check bathrooms that you pass (look for feet).

The first person out of every exit must unlock one of the two doors on their way out (hold in panic bar and key open). Note: Computer teacher will unlock the inside SACC door.

Students are to walk without talking until the drill has ended and all classes have returned to the building.

No talking when exiting or re-entering. Fire drills are timed. Move quickly and quietly.

Teachers must carry a class roster during a fire drill and take attendance on the outside grounds. Teachers are to report any missing students who are not absent and any extra students. Teachers on indoor recess duty are to exit according to the map and report what students are with them. Teachers on outside recess duty need to check class rosters.

Rosters are available in the vestibule leading to the Rally Points.

Special area teachers, cafeteria proctors, and recess monitors are to assume responsibility of the children under their care at the time of the fire drill.

If there is a student requiring assistance of any kind, the teacher and student should go to the nearest stairwell. If the teacher is responsible for other students at that time, send the class and class roster with the teacher of the nearest class and stay in the stairwell with the student. Follow the directions for the “Stairwell Report” posted by each intercom in the stairwells.

Never use the elevator during a fire drill.

Instructions:

1. Remain calm.

2. Press and release the “Push for Help” button once.

3. Alarm will sound until someone responds.

4. Do not push button again!

5. When someone responds, wait 2 seconds before answering.

6. Report: Your name, location and “All Is Clear”

or

“Student Needs Assistance” - give• Student’s name• Grade• Homeroom teacher• Your present location

7. Wait for directions to:

• Go outside (“All is clear”) or

• Stay in that stairwell (“Student Needs Assistance”) or

• Move to a safer stairwell (“Student Needs Assistance,” another location would be safer)

If you have a student who needs assistance of any kind, the teacher and student should go to the nearest stairwell, sending her/his class and class roster with the closest class and stay in stairwell with the student. Continue to follow the directions posted by each intercom in the stairwell.


Severe Weather Alert and Procedures

1. Staff and students will be notified of a severe weather condition.

2. Escort your students to your assigned location (see attached map) or to the closest “safe” location.

3. Students must assume the “Drop and Tuck” position* (on knees, facing wall with face covered – see diagram below).

4. Students must be quiet and remain in this safety position until alerted that it is safe.

5. Close classroom doors to prevent flying glass from entering hallways.

6. Take your roster/record book and take attendance. Notify the office if a student is not accounted for.

Shelter in Place--

Emergency Evacuation Plan: Hazardous Material ReleaseEmergency Evacuation due to hazardous material release: Remain calm, get class’s attention, and follow these procedures:

1. Announcement Is Made Inside & Outside the building using the PA system: move your class to the Gym, quickly and orderly. Follow the classroom ahead of you and Maintain single file.

A. Students outside must come in immediately! Join in the student lines filing into the gym.

B. LLB1 - move along the left wall leaving wing, proceed through cafe doors, down main hall, and into the gym at dock.

C. LLB2, Music, LGI 2 (balcony) - down stairwell B, stay along right wall, through cafe doors, down main. hall, and into the gym at dock.

D. Cafe students and kitchen staff - join LLB1/LLB2 groups. Make room for the classes entering from outside at the playground.

E. LLA1 - move along the right wall leaving wing, proceed through computer hall and enter gym through gym lobby doors.

F. LLA2 , SGI5 - proceed down stairwell A, along the left wall at art hall and enter the gym through gym lobby doors.

G. SACC (C120, C122, C124), IU13 (C126, C128), LGI 1, and Library Media Center - exit down stairwell C and enter gym through gym lobby doors.

H. Art, Computer, Health Office, Office Area, SGI1-4, Publication Center, Corner Conf. Rm., - proceed to gym and enter through gym lobby doors.

2. Close outside room windows when leaving. If electricity has been knocked out, the following people will personally notify you (i.e. emergency) and all classes must evacuate to the GYM: head custodian, nurse, principal's secretary and principal will report immediately to GYM. If principal is NOT in building, the head teacher reports immediately to the GYM with his/her class and takes charge.

3. Custodians: turn off outside air circulating fans.

4. If instructed to go outside, proceed quickly and calmly as directed.

A. Take your roster, using the usual Fire Drill procedure - report missing children (not absentees) to the school nurse or principal's secretary.

B. Keep children together (do calming activity) and await instructions. Emergency transportation could possibly take you and your class to St. Stephen’s Church, 1100 Hunters Chase Lane.

(Discuss this plan with your students. Impress upon your students the need for quiet and order.)

Important Information Concerning Threats by Telephone

If a Threat is received by phone, follow this procedure:

When the call is completed, immediately get a dial tone on the same line and dial *57. You will get a recorded message stating that the last call received has been traced. If you do not get this message, get a dial tone again on the same line and dial #112. You should get a recorded message stating that the last call received has been traced.

It is extremely important that you act quickly before another call comes in on the line.

After the call has been traced, immediately contact a District Office Administrator who will call the Unlawful Call Center at (1-800-662-7152) and notify them of the situation.

Evacuation Procedure for a Bomb Threat

Immediately turn off cell phones and walkie-talkies.

If you are a runner, keep a copy of your alerting responsibilities where you can grab it quickly and take it along with you. Remember to state simply, “Evacuate” to the teacher. Be sure to check bathrooms!

All should evacuate immediately. Students should exit as during a fire drill. Any unsupervised students and all visitors must join you and exit the building. If you and your class are not in your classroom, leave by the nearest exit.

Students must be quiet!

When we follow Bomb Threat evacuation procedures in lieu of a fire drill, after the drill is completed, tell the students we are practicing this way in case the alarm would not be working sometime.
