A FEW weeks ago I bought

an old Harley Davidson. I wasn’t really in the market for a Harley Davidson, but I had recently finished watching a series of The Sons of Anarchy on Netflix and it kind of sparked my imagination. I was actually on the lookout for a more mainstream automotive project, but there was something about this old banger that appealed to me. Like me, it had been around the block a few times. Like me, it was in need of a bit of an overhaul and, if the truth be told, like me, it was also just a little over the top - flamboyant is a word that comes to mind. So a deal was struck and it wasn’t long before the tiles outside my nuclear-cottage office had become dangerous to walk on. Yes, it did leak a bit…and it also wouldn’t start very easily.

When it did start, it traumatised the dogs and nearly caused a divorce – so, clearly, something had to be done to bring the noise level down. Another cause for concern was a rather ominous knock coming from somewhere deep inside the massive 1200cc mill. That would definitely require surgery.

Now, the fellow I bought the old bike from had alluded to a minor problem or two and had dropped the price accordingly, but obviously he had wildly understated the facts. This became evident as soon as Kenny Griffith and his team from North Shore Motorcycles started working on it. As

much as I would have loved to tackle the project myself, I really don’t have the right setup to do it properly, so I turned to the professionals. One by one the problems were revealed until the bike was stripped down to an absolutely bare frame and the floor of the workshop resembled one of those Airfix models with all of the pieces laid out ready for paint and assembly.

Because of the age of the bike and the fact that this particular model is rather rare, finding parts was never going to be a straightforward affair – but therein lies the challenge, and the thrill of the chase…and it never ceases to amaze me what can be found on the internet.

Despite the fact that our South African Currency is now almost worth less than the paper it’s printed on against the Dollar and the Pound, I have been able to source parts from across the globe to replace those that could not be saved. While much of the chrome work is being locally redone, the mirrors, for example, have been replaced by a pair off a similar vintage Harley from Lincoln, Nebraska – how cool is that…knowing that they have reflected wide vistas of the mid-American plains and will soon be flying again…on the North Coast of South Africa!

And while the bike undergoes its metamorphoses, I too am being put through the ringer. I am now entering the final four weeks of the Ringside Boxing Gym’s Twelve Week Challenge, ten kg’s lighter and a whole lot sharper than I have felt in a long time. This is largely due to the fact that the Ringside Boxing Gym trainers are the real deal – The Sons of Anarchy of the Ballito fitness world – and they command a lot of respect as a result!

So, I reckon we’ve got about four weeks to go – the Harley and me. We’re still waiting for a part or two for the bike and I am now beginning to enjoy the benefits of a regular workout with the Sons of Anarchy. We’ll be in good shape to enjoy the festive season if all goes according to plan, and that’s just around the corner.

There is much to be said for having the freedom to pursue the things that make you happy. Time passes quickly and there are always reasons to delay what you would really like to be doing for more pressing practical choices.

I like what Abraham Lincoln had to say about the inevitable passage of time:

“In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, but the life in your years…”

So, get out there and have some fun – after all, it’s later than you think, and you deserve it!

CHRISTMAS TRENDS FOR 2015 - NO question of restraint!

Festive mood achieved with copper, black and white

Black is increasingly finding its way into festive decoration, but also into accessories for the home. Its effect is dramatic, attention-grabbing, mystical. Table decorations with black accessories such as candles and vases, combined, with silver, can lend a touch of grandiose elegance to any celebration.

No less impressive is the effect of white, which is also a trend for

2015: a white artificial tree, decorated with white and gold - or even brightly coloured -

baubles creates a quasi glamour effect.

MOZART’S sister was just as talented as the great composer - but had to stop playing so she could learn to sew and find a husband, experts say.

Maria Anna Mozart, nicknamed ‘Nannerl’, was seen as being just as skilled as her brother Wolfgang Amadeus and received rave reviews across Europe for her musical ability.

But despite often being billed first in shows the siblings played together, Nannerl was ‘not given the opportunity’ to make money from her talent later in life and stayed at home because of the family’s economic struggles, it has been reported. The composer’s father Leopold Mozart, a court musician, started to teach Maria Anna to play harpsichord when she was just eight-years-old - with her three-year-old brother by her side.

By the 1760s she was touring Europe as a pianist, performing in Germany, Austria, London and Paris.

Leopold ended her touring when Maria Anna was eligible to marry at the age of 18 - though she carried on composing at home in Salzburg while her father and brother were travelling through Italy.

Her experiences have been brought to life in the play ‘The Other Mozart’, written by Sylvia Milo.

Milo said that the Mozart family ‘risked everything’ trying to promote Wolfgang ‘so they could be lifted up by him.’

She added: ‘The decisions that Leopold made were absolutely logical. If women made money off their music, they were thought of as prostitutes. And that was not the position of Nannerl Mozart. She wasn’t given that opportunity.’

BUY WITH CONFIDENCE – WE’LL CHECK IT OUT FOR YOU.GREG ILLING, INSPECT- A - HOME

Being an Inspect-A Home franchise holder on the North Coast I have done a number of inspections where new

owners have moved in to new homes only to discover defects that they not aware of when they made the purchase. This often leads to unhappiness, legal wrangling and associated costs not to mention the time wasted fighting over what should have been a happy transaction.

All of these buyers would have greatly benefitted by contracting an Inspection company to carry out a detailed pre-purchase inspection. They can then purchase the house with complete peace of mind, knowing exactly what needs to be repaired and what maintenance is required before signing the Sale Agreement. All properties have defects, so it makes sense to have the property professionally inspected.

Many Estate Agents are recommending Inspect-A-Home’s services to their clients to validate a sale. An Inspect-A-Home home inspection report gives the buyer complete peace of mind, eliminating guesswork and making their decision to purchase easier and quicker.

South Africa’s leading home inspection company, Inspect-A-Home, has over 30 years of experience operating in all major centres with highly qualified inspectors covered by indemnity insurance.

For your “TOTAL PEACE OF MIND”, have an Inspect-A-Home home inspection carried out as it is an essential process before buying your dream home.

NOT BAD FOR A BOX OF CHEAP FACE PAINTS!

A MOTHER who creates terrifyingly

scary artworks with face paints discovered her talent after dressing up her children for Halloween.

Nikki Shelley, 34, from Rugby in Warwickshire, has built a career out of the designs - which feature half-exposed skeletons and deranged clowns, along with plenty of blood and gore.

Now she is in huge demand for her incredibly life-like illustrations using mind-bending makeup. Nikki mostly practises the new designs on herself. In one she appears to have had half her face ripped off, her skull and a lolling tongue visible underneath.

While in another all her features are concealed by a huge open jaw with razor-sharp teeth.

Speaking of how she discovered her talent, Nikki said: ‘I did what most mums do and bought some cheap face paints one Halloween.

‘The kids loved it and I had loads of compliments on how good they looked. So, my sister asked me if I could face paint at my nephew’s birthday, and of course I said yes. ‘From there, all my family nudged me to carry on with it. But the kids soon got bored and so I started painting my own face.

That was where I found my love for horror makeup!’

In many of the designs, her own face is barely visible underneath and the detail is incredibly intricate, with sharp menacing teeth and jaws dripping blood.

From a terrifying figure with exposed bones and muscles to scary looking clowns, Nikki has everyone facing their fears.

Another shows a little red demon emerging from a giant open mouth in the middle of her face. No detail is too small with Nikki even including scratch marks under her eyes from the monster’s grip

But the images don’t come easy and can take hours to produce, depending on the complexity of the image.

Nikki, known as The Painting Lady said: ‘They can take anywhere from one to four hours to paint, depending on the detail.

‘I’ve painted so many times now I don’t think I could honestly pick just one as a favourite, but the most popular I have done is the ape.

‘I have ideas for new paints all the time, but so I don’t forget them, I have to note them down! But I don’t give any ideas out until I’ve painted.’

WE BREWS - HOT COFFEE SHOP

RAYMOND DE BRUYN is a legend of the coastal sports fishing fraternity having been featured in a huge number of fishing videos, magazines and expos. So it may be surprising to discover that

he is now the owner of one of Ballito’s more interesting coffee shops.

We Brews is located at the motoring end of the Ballito Business Park opposite Midas and Hi Q, and it is a very good choice if you are looking for a good cup of coffee and an honest, value for money meal on the go. The service is fast and friendly and the vibe is relaxed and comfortable, just like Ray!

Go and give it a try – we think you’ll be back often…

METHOD

For this recipe you will need two 1.5-litre (2½ pint) plastic pudding basins with lids.1. Soak the sultanas, raisins, currants, figs, peel, apricots and cherries in the brandy overnight, giving it a good stir now and again.2. The following day, in a large bowl mix the ginger, syrup, apples or quinces, orange juice and zest with the eggs, suet, sugar, crumbs and flour.3. Stir in the soaked fruit and spice.4. Grease the two pudding basins and divide the mix between them. Add coins now if using.5. Cut two circles of greaseproof paper to cover the top of the pudding and fold a pleat down the centre to allow pudding to expand.6. Put lids on the basins and steam puddings for 3½ hours.7. Let puddings cool before removing greaseproof paper and covering tightly with cling film and lid. The puddings can now be stored in a cool, dry place until Christmas.

To reheat, steam pudding for a further 3½ hours, turn out and flame with brandy.

Nigel Slater’s CHRISTMAS PUDDING

This pudding is lighter and a little less sweet than most. It has the seedy crunch of dried figs and a slight tartness from the apricots and orange zest. I don’t

go in for brandy butter, preferring the silky contrast of organic double cream.

THE day I make the Christmas puddings, stirring the fruit and sugar, sealing the

china basins with paper and string, then boiling them for several hours, is the cooking day I look forward to almost more than any other. The rich, heavy scent of dried fruits and brandy on a winter’s day has much to do with it, and the sharp note of citrus peel amid the flat, bland smell of boiling puddings. This is not a day to rush, but one to savour.

Enough for at least 8

With only a little over seven weeks to go until Christmas day it is time for those of us that like to make our own Christmas puddings to get serious and start to plan this year’s creations.

ALL NATURAL WOUND CARE

I HAVE an active husband and I have a fearless 2 year old boy. Needless to say cuts, bumps, scrapes, bruises and

(less frequently) burns are a common occurrence in our household. As a family we live a toxic-free, natural lifestyle (or least try our very best to!). So when it comes to the way we treat our wounds, we tend to follow suit. Did you know that there are in fact several effective and all natural alternatives to the usual OTC wound care products? The following are 9 of our favourites:

1. Manuka HoneyWhen it comes to wound care

Manuka honey is simply in a class of its own. Compared to other types of honey, Manuka contains a nutrient with extraordinary antimicrobial qualities, called the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF). In a nutshell, the higher the concentration of UMF, the greater the antibacterial strength. Make sure you use a Manuka honey with a UMF of 10 or higher. Manuka also contains several other beneficial enzymes and anti-viral substances that promote faster healing with less chance of infection. It even actively promotes the growth of new epithelial cells making it particularly useful for mild burns or sunburn.

2. Aloe VeraAloe vera is soothing, anti-

inflammatory and antibacterial, and can be used liberally on minor wounds of all kinds. Look for a pure aloe vera product (from health shops) or even better, grow a small aloe vera plant in your kitchen! Simply cut one of the leaves when you need it and use the fresh gel to soothe painful cuts, burns and scrapes.

3. CalendulaAnti-inflammatory, astringent,

antiseptic and mildly anti-microbial, calendula is a must in any home first aid kit. It is considered a vulnerary agent (a substance that promotes healing). Use topically to heal abrasions and skin infections. It even helps slow down bleeding.

4. Coconut oilCoconut oil (amongst a million other

things) can effectively heal wounds. It has amazing antibacterial, antiviral and anti-fungal properties and can even help fade scars from scrapes and cuts that have already healed. Apply directly on to the wound, cover with a plaster and refresh 2-3 times a day, to help speed recovery. Look for organic, unrefined, and cold-pressed coconut oil.

5. WitchhazelWitch hazel is one of the best

general and all purpose remedies for wound care. It is a wonderful astringent that contains procyanidins, resin and flavonoids. It has both soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, and when applied to cuts or scrapes, is an

effective disinfectant. When it comes to bruises and other wounds, witch hazel helps reduce swelling and speeds up recovery time. It can even help control bleeding. Simply apply to a fresh wound and wrap it up in gauze.

6. ComfreyComfrey contains a substance called

allantoin (which literally helps cells grow faster), rosemarinic acid (anti-inflammatory) and mucilage (soothing properties). Comfrey heals tissue so quickly in fact, that it should not be used on an open wound unless it is thoroughly cleaned before application! If not, this could trap in dirt, and an infection could occur.

7. Tea Tree OilTea tree essential oil is one of

the best ways to treat a wound to help prevent infection. It is a great antiseptic, antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal. Apply tea tree oil directly on the wound in small amounts 3-5 times a day to effectively heal wounds quickly and efficiently.

8. ProbioticsProbiotics are an incredibly useful

addition to your family first aid kit. Who would have guessed!? Simply add a powdered probiotic preparation to the wound to help reduce the risk of external infection and ward off pathogenic bacteria. Probiotics also aid in reducing inflammation and enhancing the healing process.

9. ArnicaArnica is a natural anti-

inflammatory and is especially helpful with bruises, swelling, and other painful tenderness from sprains or strains. Use externally in the form of an oil or ointment.

Other Useful Tips:

Clean wounds carefully Rinse under running water or

wipe with organic cotton wool, from the centre of the injury outwards, to remove any grime. Also periodically throughout the healing process make sure the wound is cleaned with a gentle homemade saline solution or with neat calendula tincture (or, if you prefer, one part tincture to 10 parts water).Organic Cotton

Always use organic cotton swabs, balls, band aids, and other forms of wound dressing. Cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops there is. Honestly, a pesticide or herbicide is the last thing you want touching the delicate skin of a cut or scrape!Supplement

A poor diet in general can sabotage healing and deficiencies of essential fatty acids, Vitamins A, B1, C, D, E and K, and zinc are associated with poor wound healing. Vitamin A helps to form scar tissue, B1 (thiamine) is needed for collagen synthesis and B5 (pantothenic acid) accelerates the healing process. Vitamin C promotes

the formation of collagen and elastin, Vitamin E aids in the healing of skin grafts and zinc accelerates wound healing. Eat a wholesome diet and supplement with the highest quality Omega 3 fish oil and Multivitamin you can afford!Boost your protein intake

Skin is made of protein and extra is required when you are injured. Extra is needed to manufacture immune cells and antibodies, to reduce inflammation and to mend the wound at the site of incision. Without enough protein recovery may be delayed and the risk of infection is higher.

Final PointsWhen it comes to natural and home-

based wound care please exercise common sense. If you are unsure or inexperienced rather consult with your

trusted health care practitioner. I also advise that you thoroughly research the aforementioned products for yourself, then build your home first aid kit accordingly. Every family is different so please feel free to use only the products that you feel are appropriate for you.

serums, all containing an essential oil and promising to be the solution to every hair care problems and need. There are also a vast number of different types of oils to choose from: macadamia, olive, coconut, almond, marula, argon and more. All of these sound great (and vaguely like the ingredients to something delicious), but the sheer variety of options can make it feel rather overwhelming to anyone wanting choose hair oil for themselves.

Don’t be intimidated though. All of the hair care ranges containing these new generation oils are clearly marked for correct usage, so guess work is a thing of the past! Just read, purchase and apply accordingly. If you’re still feeling unsure, let me take you through three of my favourite hair oils: ARGON OIL

Perfect for thick and coarse hair which is full of protein and very little moisture. Argon oil provides much needed nourishing hydration. The particles of this oil are also small enough to penetrate the

hair cuticle and absorb deep into the inner center of the hair shaft or cortex. ALMOND OIL

This oil’s natural smoothing, protecting and moisture-sealing properties allow hair to grow without snapping and prevent against breakage. It is also said that the strengthening vitamins and magnesium in almond oil can aid with hair loss and stimulate growth. TEA TREE OIL

Combine this essential oil with almond oil (or another carrier oil, such as olive or coconut) for an amazing treatment for your scalp. Massaging tea tree oil into your scalp improves circulation, moisturises and nourishes your scalp, clearing blocked pores and provide relief from dandruff.

LIFE IS BUT A

ANOTHER heart-wrenchingly difficult

decision for me on Saturday was to terminate the life of my 13 year old Labrador.

A sweet boy who was happy to lie about underfoot and not keen to be left alone. A lovely young woman came from the vet – what a difficult thing to have to do – one moment he is lying at the front door eager to have company the next she is sliding a needle into a vein to terminate his life. I always think dogs can smell your thoughts so I tried to keep mine controlled and calm. He had our full attention, I stroked and fondled him and thanked him for his lifelong devotion. As the drug hit his heart, he buckled and his eyes dimmed. Again I marvel at that moment when life just leaves. He’s still there – his golden fur, his sweet face, his perfect nose but the life has gone. Your whole being is gripped by the moment and it’s frighteningly quick. The liberating angels left quickly after pronouncing him dead and left me to hold my dear dead friend and cry my tears. I do not know if I could get through these things without my breathing knowledge and the wonderful ideals of Patanjali. Yoga

to the rescue yet again! On the more practical side- thanks for dear friends armed with pick and shovel that dug up Hugo’s favorite space on the lawn and lovingly laid him to rest. He looked so sweet and peaceful laid in his favorite duvet cover. We spread him over gently and drank a tot of whiskey together with a little spilled on the grave – not too much – it was a damn fine whiskey! I miss him so, his sighs and grunts, his soft eyes following my every move. My remaining two dogs are a great comfort – an aging Dachshund, low on sight with a circumference somewhat thicker than it should be – sadly she’ll be next – and a wooly little terrier type mutt that is about as smart as they come. I am determined to enjoy what life they have left in them and of course whatever life I have left in me. Coming to terms with the death of others helps you a little further along the way of coming to terms with your own death.

Spare a thought for the hundreds of mercy killings that are carried out – some for old and infirm sadly some for young and sound. Animals are the victims of their own fertility.

Namaste.

HARLEY DAVIDSON XR1200:

THE XR is cool, right down to the riding position. Even if you have no intention of ever buying or riding one of these

bikes, find one in a dealer’s showroom, swing a leg over it and reach out for the handlebars. They’re fairly wide, fairly low, fairly close to you, they’re angled just so - and before you’ve even touched the switchgear you feel deeply, irretrievably cool.

The rest of the bike, from the twin, right-side pipes to the classic Harley orange, black or matt silver paint alternatives, fits the cool image, but the visual core is that 45-degree V-twin engine, complete with 1950s-style Sportster logo cast into the covers.

The chassis is based on the 1200 Sportster but, like the motor, it has been reworked, with longer travel suspension, quicker steering and twin front disc brakes that provide reasonable power.

The weak spot is the suspension, which is underdamped, though not fatally so. But the build quality offers some concerns. The exhaust end caps rust, as do various bolt heads. The detailing doesn’t help, with some of the fasteners looking agricultural, and the Allen bolts securing the handlebar clamp fill with water when it rains. On the left side, the clutch cable looks both exposed and ugly routed around and below the engine, while you get no span adjustability on the levers, and the oil cooler is vulnerable and not pretty hung out on the left frame downtube.

It’s not perfect, then, but there are plenty of riders who love it regardless. It looks fabulous, sounds and feels great. Harley’s Bill Davidson once said of the V-Rod that it was the bike for people who loved the name but didn’t like the bikes. He could have been talking about the XR1200. Flawed perhaps, but still a diamond.
