T was a busy weekend.

School holidays generally change the atmosphere in Ballito and while the traffic pressure increases and parking bays become hot property,

there is a wild and carefree spirit in the air that I find invigorating.

Ballito was treated to the third annual Win a Pool with Slimline Pools Competition over the weekend and the Ballito Junction Shopping Centre was transformed for the occasion. From noon on Friday to the middle of Sunday afternoon contestants battled sleep deprivation, hypothermia, and an increasingly difficult series of elimination challenges until the winner was crowned to a roar of approval from the crowd. There were prizes galore for contestants and spectators alike and the party continued non-stop for three days.

This year saw record crowds in attendance which the organisers were thrilled about because they took a gamble and changed media partners for this year’s event. Life & Style was selected to drive publicity and participation in print, online and on radio and the results spoke loudly for themselves.

Saturday night’s pool party was particularly successful which is gratifying considering the fact that there was so much else happening. The rugby test series decider between the South African and Ireland should have been sufficient on its own to dilute the attendance but it didn’t. The party rocked, powered by Radio Life & Style and Jacqui de Agrella, boss at the very popular Mamma G’s Ballito’s iconic Italian style restaurant, said that they eventually closed at 4am – a big night…one of the biggest ever!

And it was really awesome to see how the community rallied in support of their champions in the pool, all of whom were raising sponsorship money for their selected charities. The Ballito Specialised Rescue Unit was in attendance throughout the event rendering medical support and keeping a watch on safety and security. These volunteers give selflessly of their time and skills, supporting and augmenting the wider network of medical and emergency services in the region and are rightly held in high esteem.

We enjoyed working with the

Slimline team on this project and congratulate them on a really excellent project that has done a huge amount for various charities in the region through a really fun and interactive community event. The Win a Pool with Slimline 2016 was yet another reason to celebrate what makes Brand Ballito so special!

On a less exciting note, our Ratepayers Association received some negative publicity recently following the Annual General Meeting, some of it justified. The Dolphin Coast Residents and Ratepayers Association, DOCRRA, has had a rather difficult time establishing itself as a bona fide Ratepayers Association since it more or less fell apart when the former committee resigned under the chairmanship of Louis Luyt Jnr. and a handful of concerned citizens stepped in in an attempt to save it.

Since the AGM, the newly elected committee has decided to engage with the management of all of the residential estates in the area to establish a working relationship to bring everyone together in a viable ratepayers association in this region. Hopefully this will happen and we are waiting for a meeting to be convened that will determine the way forward. Because the Urban Improvement Precinct is doing an excellent job of cleaning, greening and securing key commercial

nodes in Ballito, some people consider a Ratepayers Association superfluous. The UIP is well funded and managed, enabling it to perform its function. With sufficient membership, our Ratepayers Association will be in a position to deliver similar results in areas that the UIP doesn’t cover. However, if there is insufficient support for such a body from the community it serves, there seems little point in continuing with it.

I’ll keep you in the loop.

contestants entered the pool in a bid to win a pool with Slimline.

Marius from Slimline Pool Centre and Roland from Specialised rescue unit also

entered the pool as a non-competing team, in an effort to raise funds for the SRU.

The contestants had a rough first night, but the sun rose on Saturday, and spirits lifted. The reality always dawns after the first night as to how tough this competition really is.

After several hours of deliberation and a few more teams stepping out of the pool the Slimline team and their event management team Marketing Works, threw a massive curve ball and changed the game. The teams were split into singles and were now competing for themselves.

THEY CAME TO WIN A POOLBallito’s biggest pool party just

got a whole lot bigger. This year’s Win a Pool with Slimline

competition was bigger and better drawing in the crowds and creating an opportunity for the community to engage with and support the charities

that they hold dear. It was also an opportunity for someone to

win a pool!

Saturday evening the contestants’ spirits were lifted as they and the crowds watched the victorious Springboks vs Ireland game live, thanks to Mersat and Open View HD. They were then kept moving as they danced the night away at the pool party powered by Radio Life and Style 88.0FM.

Elimination day arrived with 13 contestants left to battle it out for the prize. The contestants endured 7 rounds of eliminations. Louis was an amazing contender and made it to the top three when he battled it out in the shortest elimination round in the history of the competition. He was beaten by Francois and Megan who went head to head in the final.

The final saw Francois and Megan standing back to back with their arm outstretched holding a mini replica of the prize that was filled with water. They battled it out for 10 minutes and then the winner was called. Francois from Ashton International College was deemed the winner of Win a Pool with Slimline 2016.

His prize is being donated to the Grace Autism Wing at the school.

3 days, 52 hours, 26 contestant and 1 winner. For all the news on the event visit Slimline’s

REDD TILE – BRINGING ELEGANCE HOME

DANIEL MAISTRY

IT seems that many of us feel that style and design should be left to the professionals. In many cases I would agree, but there is one

private space in your home where you should be able to flex your designer muscles and dance to your own drumbeat.

Bathroom tile designs isn’t something that most people think about very often, but it can be the most important part of any bathroom.

If you’ve ever gone into a bathroom with beautiful tiles, there’s a pretty good chance that you couldn’t help but notice it. Whether people want to admit it or not, they probably spend a lot of time in their bathrooms on a daily basis.

With that being said, having a bathroom that is welcoming, comfortable, and attractive, is an important feature for many. But while people do want to make their bathrooms as beautiful as possible, sometimes they don’t know where to start.

Unlike other rooms in the home, bathrooms can’t be accessorised with furniture to add to their design, and that’s where bathroom tile design comes in. Picking the perfect tile or tile pattern to design your bathroom can really give the room a completely new look and feel.

Adding designer mosaic and personalised custom features can change the dull & drab into the amazing and fab.

I have been designing dream bathrooms

for hundreds of valued clients for the better part of 20 years. Keeping abreast with the ever changing trends in tiling style and fashion is not my job – it’s my passion. At Redd Tile we welcome you to come in and discuss your ideas for your dream bathroom with us.

Let’s see how we can make that dream a reality.

Tile Trends for 2016From geometric shapes to larger format tile, this feels like a year to go bolder and brighter, whether you express this with a pattern, a saturated hue, or a contrasting grout color is totally up to you.

1. Geometric PatternsHexagons are all the rage this year,

perfect for flooring (all those grout joints make for a solid grip) but also work wonders for accent walls, kitchen backsplashes and fireplace surrounds.

2. Square tileWe love this bright shower that uses

4x4s on the walls and smaller 2x2s (perfect for no-slip) on the floor

A contrasting grout joint has made its comeback and it doesn’t look at all dated. Partner to the geometric trend, a contrasting color can make a pattern or shape pop.

3. Contrasting Grout

4. Saturated ColorsWe’re betting we’ll see a lot more

rich greens and blues this year. Imagine soaking in the tub surrounded by a soothing sea-inspired hue

5. Go Big with Larger FormatYou can go really big for a modern effect

Step 2Alternate going over-under for each palm frond

Step 3Repeat with the next frond, over-under pattern that’s the opposite of your first line

Step 4Repeat steps 1-3 to continuing to braid the palm fronds until you’ve reach the end of the frondSame procedure goes for the opposite side

REMY MARTIN COMES TO BALLITODAVE CHARLES

REMY MARTIN is a posh brand. And brand ambassador Minenhle Kunene

chose a venue that would appeal to the target market when he brought it to the SMD Motor Group showrooms in Ballito last Thursday evening.

The event was part of a national rollout of their latest marketing campaign behind the somewhat confusing slogan: Remy Martin – One Life / Live Them.

Okay…so…one life….check! Live them…mmmmaybe… not really sure what to do with that.

They go on to expand on this proposition - “why be one thing when you can be many things…”

But I obviously missed the point, not being representative of their targeted demographic.

This I deduced from what followed on the invitation:

“Rémy Martin invites you to be part of their many lives, with invites to exclusive events, and custom tailored content suited for your lives. Rémy Martin salutes the man who lives many lives. If that’s you, let us know.”

Despite the above soliloquy, I went along to be polite and, surprisingly, there were also a number of women present who either hadn’t bothered to read the invitation or didn’t fully understand it.

Still, the cognac was superb and even those who diluted it with soft drinks to hide the taste, chugged it down with aplomb.

Viva Remy Martin…Please come again, anytime!

THIS may out me as a pretty strange person, but I’ve never been much for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Don’t get me wrong, peanut butter is one of the greatest foods on earth, I agree. And who doesn’t love a bit of strawberry jam? It must be

the bread. No, it’s definitely the bread. And I like bread, I really do. But combine all the aforementioned ingredients and it’s all just a little… meh.

So why not just eat peanut butter and jelly? I guess it could get pretty messy, seeing as the dismissed bread is what would have held everything together. So let’s do this peanut butter cup style, shall we? These peanut butter & jelly cups take only a few minutes to make and 15 minutes to set! Five ingredients and you’ll be in PB&J heaven, minus the bread. These make a delicious snack or treat that’s easy to grab on the go!

WHAT YOU NEEDMakes 12 Peanut Butter & Jelly Cups

•1 bottle Peanut Butter (natural is best!)•1 ½ tablespoons honey or syrup•½ cup coconut oil, melted•teaspoon salt (only add if the peanut butter is unsalted)•¼ to ½ cup jam (use flavour of your choice)•Paper cupcake liners•Muffin tin

DIRECTIONS1.Line a muffin tin with 12 paper liners.2.Place the peanut butter, honey, coconut oil, and salt (if using) in a blender (high speed is best) and blend until smooth and creamy.3.Divide the peanut butter between the lined muffin tin cups.4.Spoon 1 to 2 teaspoons (more or less, depending on your preference) of jam on top of the peanut butter in each cup, spreading it out so that it isn’t in one clump.5.Use a toothpick to swirl the jam around the top of the peanut butter.6.Place the muffin tin in the freezer for 15-20 minutes, or until cups have hardened. Store the cups in an airtight container in the freezer (or fridge) and let sit at room temperature (if frozen) for 5 minutes before eating.

Enjoy!

14 GENERAL INTEREST 29 June -12 July 2016 IN P R I N T , O N A I R O N L IN E

A FEW weeks after its presentation, the new PEUGEOT 3008 has unveiled its most dynamic and exclusive version: the GT. A truly modern expression of driving

pleasure, aimed at aesthetes who are looking for a new driving experience, the GT version crowns the brand’s

new SUV range. Exclusively equipped with the 2.0L BlueHDi 180 S&S EAT6, the new PEUGEOT 3008 GT has the benefit of a series of specific attributes as well as the unique “Coupe Franche” paint design. In addition, the GT Line finish offers, on more affordable engine versions, a synthesis of sporty and top-of-the-

range looks. The new PEUGEOT 3008 GT and GT Line are part of the brand’s move up the range and will be available from the commercial launch from October 2016.

The new PEUGEOT 3008 SUV will be launched in South Africa during the first quarter of 2017.

THIS provocative, athletic flagship coupe makes

the strongest statement yet about Lexus’s future product direction. In helping to drive the future of the Lexus brand, the mission for LC 500 was to offer a dynamic driving experience and character unlike any Lexus vehicle prior to it.

Now picture a new

Lexus LC 500 accelerating on a twisting mountain road and as it passes, its thrilling engine note shatters the rockface to reveal a battery of pounding pistons and spinning gears. And how about a scene where a face in the mountain side turns to watch the car speed by? It’s an amazing spectacle to herald the arrival of Lexus’s flagship coupe, the result of a

ground-breaking film-making project that has shunned CGI trickery in favour of real-world projection mapping artistry on an unprecedented scale.

The LC 500 coupe enjoyed a sensational debut earlier this year as the stand-out star of the Detroit motor show. Now the dynamic brilliance of its design and engineering are being celebrated in a short film that helps build anticipation towards the car’s market launch next year. The film was released on 22 June 2016 on Lexus’s UK YouTube channel, together

with a supporting feature on how the movie was made.

Shot in a remote area of Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountain range the filming required a team of 20 equipped with four of the brightest projectors in the world. They had just three nights in which to translate Davey’s visuals into finished footage.

Multiple projectors had to be linked to create a seamless backdrop of images moving over the mountainside, timed to synchronise perfectly with the LC 500 as it powered along the twisting road. As well as the evocative projections, the film also focuses on some of the design and engineering features that define the new coupe, such its arresting bodywork design, carbon fibre roof and retracting rear spoiler. Inside the car, craftsmanship detailing such as the stitching of the suede-effect Alcantara trim and the sculpted surface of the magnesium gear shift paddles, is contrasted with the hi-tech appearance of the 3D instrumentation that greets the driver when they fire up the engine-start button.

The new LC 500 will go on sale early next year in South Africa.

WE INSPIRE DREAMS

SHED THAT SPREADR

INGSIDE BOXING GYM in Ballito is where bodies are transformed and lives are changed. It’s where you will find people from all walks of life working out

under the watchful eye of owner, Tyron Koen and his team of hard men with hearts of gold. They are tough and they take no prisoners but they motivate and inspire everyone in the room to give of their best and that’s where the results come from.

They also offer their legendary Twelve Week Challenge that they call Shed That Spread and the motivation behind the challenge is to help people set new goals and get rid of some of the ‘spread’ that inevitably happens over winter. While Ringside Boxing is a boxing gym, Tyron is changing the perception that many people have of a boxing gym. There are so many benefits to boxing fitness training and conditioning and it’s suitable for all ages, shapes and sizes.

The challenge runs for 12 weeks, with a weigh-in (and measure) at the start, half way through and at the end, as well as before and after photographs. Each of the contestants is given an eating plan to follow and the final results are based on the highest body fat percentage lost. Everyone who follows the plan drops a significant percentage of body fat and weight and you can too.

Overall winners of the last twelve Week Challenge were Jaunenne Boshoff and Leon Mare. Physique winners were Matt Gunning and Ashley Maidmen.

THE NEXT CHALLENGE STARTS IN SEPTEMBER.

To find out more about how you can get involved, contact Ringside Boxing: www.ringsideboxing.co.za or phone Tyron: 082 782 9129 or email: [email protected]
