June 2020 Welcome back, as City re-opens Many of the City’s facilities re-opened last month following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, with more facilities set to open from Saturday 6 June. The Civic Centre front counter, Leisure World, Addie Mills Centre, the four libraries and three youth centres are now open. Community venues, including hire spaces at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre, are available for bookings, while sports clubs and community groups have resumed limited activities. Under the State Government’s Phase 3 guidelines, most of Leisure World, as well as playgrounds, skate parks and outdoor gym equipment will also open. To ensure the health and welfare of the community and City staff, there are limits on the number of people who can attend each facility at any time, and registrations may be required for some activities. The City has prepared COVID Safety Plans for the re-opening of facilities in line with State Government requirements. More information about how each of our facilities will operate under the current restrictions is also available on the Coronavirus page of the City’s website. For more details, please call 9397 3000 or Webchat at www.gosnells.wa.gov.au. Life in the City of Gnells More time to be creative Entries for the Home is Where the Art Is competition have been extended until 4pm on Monday 22 June. Your creative work must showcase something special about your City for a chance to win a $300 art supply voucher or one of six category vouchers worth $100 each, thanks to the City of Gosnells and Primewest. See the City’s website or social media for details. New park for Chelsfield Residents close to Chelsfield Street Reserve in Gosnells will see their park transformed over the coming months, as the City begins an upgrade of the one-hectare site. The new park design is based on many features identified by residents during a consultation meeting late last year. It will include a pee-wee BMX track, nature- based playground with shade sails, sand and rubber soft-fall for all abilities play, as well as access paths to the park, sports multi-goal and large lawn areas. Mature trees will be retained and more trees will be planted to create a leafy retreat. The project is part of the City’s Green Space Planning and is due to be completed by August. Facility fee relief Users of local community and sports facilities will receive much-needed financial support, as part of the City’s ongoing response to COVID-19. A relief package worth more than $150,000 was approved by Council last week to assist more than 60 hirers and lessees affected by restrictions and facility closures. Many community-based organisations had already spent funds on uniforms and equipment before the pandemic and have since experienced fewer registrations, lost sponsorship and reduced fundraising opportunities. The package includes concessions for ground hire and floodlighting for the entire winter season for sports clubs, however clubs or groups seeking information or advice specific to their situation can call 9397 3000 or email [email protected]. Footy Drive Spare footy and soccer balls in new or good condition are needed for the City’s Footy Drive to help eligible local kids play sport. Donated balls will be collected from Monday 8 June – Sunday 14 June at several locations across the City. For more details, visit the City’s website, call 9397 3000 or email [email protected]. Councillors’ Corner The Coronavirus pandemic has truly tested our community over the past few months and I’m so proud of how our residents and business community have rallied to support each other during this difficult time. Now that restrictions are being relaxed, I hope that people will continue to support local businesses by making the choice to shop local, eat at local restaurants and cafes and use trades and services based in our area – they need your business more than ever. Our path out of COVID-19 will continue to challenge our mental health and I urge everyone to be more considerate, more patient and more understanding as we get back on our feet. Check in regularly with family and friends and take care of yourself by exercising, eating well and getting involved in your community – the City’s Home But Not Alone campaign on Facebook is a great place to find free, fun and informative activities. Finally, please be assured that the City is working hard to support the community and boost the local economy by fast-tracking projects and seeking grant funding to reduce the impact on ratepayers and residents. We will get through this together. Cr Glenn Dewhurst www.gosnells.wa.gov.au | 9397 3000 | [email protected]
