Thanksgiving is upon us... Thanksgiving is often looked at as just "another holiday", an occasion to overeat and see your long lost cousin. Most of us have to stop and remind ourselves to be thankful on Thanksgiving, much less any other time of year. Lets remember that we as Americans are so blessed and have so much more than we really even need. Came across this…

- If you have food in the refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof overhead and a place to sleep… you are richer than 75% of this world. - If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace… you are among the top 8% of the world’s wealthy. - If you woke up this morning with more health than illness…you are more blessed than the millions who will not survive this week. - If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture, or the pangs of starvation…you are ahead of 500 million people in the world. - If you can attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest, torture, or death… you are more blessed than three billion people in the world. - If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful, you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not. - If you can hold someone’s hand, hug them or even touch them on the shoulder… you are blessed because you can offer a healing touch. - If you can read this message, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read at all.

WE ARE SO BLESSED!!! Don't forget to count your blessings this month as you go about your work and play. Thanks again for reading LifeandHomes™.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Americans Mortgage Payments LaggingWhile more Americans are paying their credit card bills on time, a growing number are paying their mortgages 60 or more days late, according to research by Experian, the leading global information services company.

Nationally, since 2007, the number of credit card payments that are 60 days or more overdue declined by 20 percent, the study found. In contrast, 25 percent more consumers are paying their mortgages 60 days late.

In 30 of the nation's largest metropolitan areas, the percentage of late credit card payments decreased significantly, with Cleveland showing the most improvement, Experian reports. Residents of the "Rock and Roll Capital of the World" improved their payment rate by nearly 35 percent between 2007 and 2011.

Mortgage payment rates, however, did not fare as well over the same time period in many metropolitan areas across the country. The percentage of missed mortgage payments (considered to be payments 60 or more days overdue), rose dramatically in 26 regions in the study, and improved in just four.

Portland, Ore., fared the worst, with nearly a 100 percent increase in the number of missed mortgage payments. (ARA)

Holiday Home ProtectionPlanning on traveling during the upcoming holiday season? Each year, nearly 5 million families become victims of household burglary. According to the Electronic Security Association (ESA), there are some simple steps you can take to make your home less attractive to would-be burglars. The best way is to combine the list of ideas below with a professionally installed and monitored electronic security alarm system in your home. Before you leave on your trip, be sure to:

• get a trusted friend or relative to "house sit." Or, make sure your neighbors know your plans.• Have a neighbor pick up your newspapers and your mail for you daily.• Lock all doors and windows, and secure the garage door.• Leave a car parked in the driveway, or ask a neighbor to park in your driveway.• Leave a house key -- and a number where you can be reached -- with a trusted friend or neighbor.• Use timers to turn lights on and off at certain times, altering lighting patterns, to create an occupied look.• Leave drapes and shades open as normal. (Closed blinds during the day are a sure sign of an empty house, plus they allow a burglar to attend to his business unseen by neighbors.)• Be sure your trees and hedges have been trimmed. This gives burglars fewer places to hide.• Replace any burned-out lights in your yard. Consider upgrading outdoor light fixtures with devices that have built-in motion detectors, which turn on the lights whenever anyone walks past.

-(HIT)

Seasonal Home Maintenance RemindersFall:• Have furnace or heating system serviced• vacuum baseboards to remove dust• Check doors to ensure they open and close properly, replace weather stripping as necessary• Winterize landscape, store outdoor furniture, cover delicate plants for colder temperatures Winter:• Clean out gutters and down spouts• Insulate pipes in crawl space and attic• Check clean and/or replace furnace air filters• vacuum fire, smoke, or carbon monoxide detectors to keep dust or debris from interfering• Check electrical cords, plugs, and outlets before using indoor or outdoor seasonal lights

newsShortsTalking TurkeyWhen the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line opened twenty-nine years ago, six home economists responded to 11,000 phone calls the first year.

These days, the Butterball Turkey Talk-Line em-ploys more than 50 professionally trained, col-lege-educated home economists and nutrition-ists, who respond to more than 100,000 questions each November and December.

While most queries are easily answered, Five of the most unusual questions they have received include:

1. Is it okay to thaw my turkey in the bathtub while bathing my kids?2. Can I brine my turkey in the washing machine?3. Can I use my oven's self-cleaning cycle to speed up the cooking process?4. If I cut my turkey with a chain saw will the oil affect the taste?5. Can I take my frozen turkey into my sauna to thaw it faster?

The Butterball® Turkey Talk-Line is open annually in November and December. 1-800-BUTTER-BALL (1-800-288-8372) (Consumerist.com)

Hot or cold room?Temperature differences of up to three degrees from room to room are not uncommon, but often one or several rooms are uncomfortably warm or cold. This condition could be caused by several factors within your home including inadequate insulation, air leakage, poor duct system design, duct leakage, unwanted heating by the sun

in warmer months, or a failure in part of your heating and cooling system.

Common problem rooms include:• Attic• Room over a garage• Basement• Additions

Prescription Checklist:For best results hire a contractor who is an energy specialist to do an in-home evaluation. A good specialist will use diagnostic equipment to evaluate the performance of your home and generate a customized list of improvements.• Ask your contractor to check if your heating and cooling system is operating correctly.• Ask your contractor to check your ducts for air leakage and proper distribution of air.• Seal air leaks and add insulation.• If the sun is making rooms to hot, consider shades or solar screening.• After trying these items, consider ceiling fans to make room air circulation more uniform. You will need to hire an electrician to install it. (Energystar.gov)

Natural Light Impacts Home DecorThe directional source of natural light can influence the effect it has on a home’s interior. Sunlight entering from the north is usually colder. A northern exposure will only get direct sun during summer months. By contrast, a southern exposure guarantees a warm, sun-filled interior. Rooms that receive light from the east will have bright mornings, muted mid-days and cooler evenings. West-facing rooms will experience the most sun in the afternoon and evening.

You can also bring light into your home from above, through a skylight. No matter where you put one in your home, a skylight will allow you to admit the full scope of the day’s light into your decor – morning, afternoon and evening. Both venting and fixed skylights will offer the benefit of allowing you to control the amount of light that enters through it if you add simple accessories like remote-controlled blinds. Tubular skylights, like velux’s Sun Tunnel brand, can create a different effect by bringing diffused sunlight into spaces where you might not be able to put a traditional skylight, such as a first-floor master suite or a closet. You can learn more about skylights, and download a free skylight planner app for personal devices, at www.veluxusa.com. (ARA)

outside tips

* After a summer of caring for your lawn, you might be looking for a break, but make sure you don't stop mowing too soon. Lawns should be mowed well into the fall, even after growing stops. grass should be at least 3 inches high and clippings should be raked up and bagged on the last mowing of the season to prevent roots being smothered over the winter.

* If you planted perennials, check with your local garden center about what type of protection particular plants require depending on where you live. gardeners in Minnesota will face much different winter weather than someone in virginia. Protecting with extra mulch or soil will help in some places, while others may require covering the plants with burlap, canvas or any other porous fabric. If you have trees that come near a power line, the branches should be trimmed back in the event of ice storms or heavy snowfalls that can cause trees to fall.

* Companies like TimberTech manufacture composite decking, railing, and fence products that require less maintenance than traditional treated wood. While no product is maintenance free, low maintenance decking means less work for you to prepare your deck for the winter. Whether your deck is treated wood or composite wood, keeping a clean, dry deck surface is the key to longer deck life and enjoyment. Just as you would rake the leaves from the lawn, sweep

the leaves, needles and branches from the deck and remove all smaller debris from between deck boards as proper drainage is important to avoiding moisture build up. You can also use a deck cleaner and power washer to eliminate build-up. If you have a treated-wood deck, make sure you seal or stain the deck to keep water from getting in.

If you live in a cold weather climate where ice and snow are a factor, use calcium chloride or rock salt to melt the ice and snow on your deck. When shoveling snow off of the deck, run the shovel lengthwise on the deck boards. Shoveling cross-wise can scratch or cut into the planks.

* Storing deck furniture depends on what type of furniture you have. Wood furniture needs to be treated and covered with a protective, waterproof cover. Folding deck chairs can be easily stored in basements, garages or sheds, while covers are available for most size tables.

* If you've got a snowblower, make sure it's tuned up and ready to go; if you have a lawnmower, make sure you run it down or drain all the fuel out of it. Fuel in a mower or snowblower should be fresh when you start the season.

* If you have cracks in your driveway or sidewalks, make sure they are repaired before the snow starts. The thawing and refreezing of snow can cause significant damage when it gets into cracks.

indoor tips

* The more cold air you keep out, the less heat you'll have to use to warm your house. If you have drafty windows, consider wrapping them with plastic to help save energy and keep the cold air out of your house. Another way to keep the heat in is to caulk around windows and door frames where air may leak into the house, and add weather stripping or replace weather stripping that may have worn down.

* If you have a fireplace, make sure it is capped to keep birds and rodents out. Firewood should also be stored away from your house as it can become a home for mice.

* Heating accounts for 34 percent of utility usage, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, so checking your ducts to make sure they are sealed is a great way to save money by increasing the efficiency of your furnace. Other ways to make sure you are heating your home efficiently is by making sure your furnace is tuned up and installing a programmable thermostat that can be set to regulate your home's temperature without you having to remember to do it yourself.

Following these tips can help you save money in the short and long term as you get ready to welcome the winter to your outdoor and indoor spaces. (ARA)

get Your Home Ready for Winter inside and outIt may not feel like winter yet, but cold weather is around the corner. Take advantage of the good weather now by following these tips to prepare the outside and inside of your home to survive the winter months ahead.
