Dear Parents/ Carers, Welcome to the new school year! I am looking forward to teaching and supporting your child throughout this year. Year One is a very rewarding year with students learning and growing in confidence and ability. Please feel free to contact me via the office if you have any concerns or questions. Likewise, I will contact you if I feel there is a need to discuss anything regarding your child. I look forward to working with you and furthering the education of your child. English Reading and Viewing Children will be provided with a selection of Literacy-based activities that will be completed in a ‘free choice’ setting. During this time, I will work with students in small ability based groups in order to develop their literacy skills while catering to individual learning needs. This time will be spent focusing on fluent and accurate reading. Children will also be taught a variety of comprehension strategies in order to enable them to engage more deeply with the texts that they are reading. You can help your child at home by listening to them read as often as possible. Writing and Representing This term, writing will be focused on creating imaginative texts as these are written to entertain an audience. Children will be learning to write more complex imaginative texts, and there will be a focus on the writing process. Children will begin to understand that writers compose for a specific audience, to convey meaning and with a purpose in mind. Speaking and Listening Children will participate in shared news sessions where other students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the information presented by their peers. Term One will focus on ‘Free Choice’ news. Please refer to the table below for your child’s News Day. Mathematics

The children will be working through Stage One Math outcomes throughout the year. The areas of study include: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry as well as Statistics and Probability. We will be concentrating on Time, Length, 2D Shapes and Volume and Capacity. The children will participate in a variety of targeted hands on experiences, themed units and skill specific games in daily lessons and activities. Students will access modelled, guided and independent lesson structures and learning activities.

PDHPE

Physical Education lessons will occur in short, sharp sessions throughout the week. This term children will be building upon their developing Fundamental Movement Skills as well as improving their personal fitness by participating in skills-based lessons. Our Personal Development and Health lessons will be centred around; Bullying, Safe Living and the social emotional resilience program You Can Do It!

Science

Students will be exploring their physical world. I will provide opportunities for students to investigate sources of light and sound, how they are produced and how light and sound travels. Students’ understanding of the role of light and sound in our lives and our community will be developed through hands-on activities. Students will participate in investigations and even explore why we have two eyes instead of one.

History / Geography Students will explore places across a range of scales within Australia and in contrast to Australia’s location in the world. Students will represent and describe the position of objects on maps and within their local area. They will gather, organise and display data on the places people have visited in Australia and examine the factors influencing people’s access to places. They will discuss connections people have with places, both locally and globally. Students will respond to texts to understand the special and significant connection Aboriginal People have to Country.

Creative & Performing Arts Miss Gibson will be working with 1C for Visual Arts. Music, Dance and Drama lessons will occur in the 1C classroom. This term we will experiment with different instruments, including the voice. In dance and drama children will have the opportunity to compose their own drama/dance pieces in small groups.

Homework

Homework will be sent home on Mondays and should be returned to school on Fridays. Please encourage your child to complete activities as it helps them revise their class work. Please encourage your child to read by utilising the school’s library or use books from elsewhere that your child enjoys such as the local Library or books from home. Homework is not compulsory and if you choose for your child to be excluded, please complete the form available at the front office. One of the most valuable things you can do for your child is to spend time each day reading with or to them. This models correct reading behaviours and allows children to see that reading is a worthwhile and fun activity. I look forward to partnering with you to make this a fun and rewarding year for your child. Thank you for your support and co-operation.

- Miss Jessica Carson

Absences

Please ensure your child arrives on time daily. The NSW

Department of Education requires all absences to be

justified. If your child is away, please send a note explaining

why on their return. Alternatively, you can phone or

use Skoolbag to let us know that your child is away.

Book Packs and Pencil Cases

Book packs are available for purchase for $65 through the

office. Children will not require pencil cases in the classroom.

They will however need to have a lead pencil, pencil

sharpener and coloured pencils for homework.

Hats Students must wear a school hat

when on the playground as part of the NSW Department of Education’s

Sun Safe policy.

“Education is a shared commitment between

dedicated teachers, motivated students and enthusiastic
