PORTSMOUTH – CITY OF SHIPS

The city of Portsmouth, on the south coast of England, is the home of many famous and historical ships. The Romans were the first people to build ships in Portsmouth. They built ships on the beach next to the

city. By the 1490s, ships were too big to build on Portsmouth’s beach so a special port was made for ship building and repairs. In 1512, King Henry the Eighth of England chose Portsmouth as the place to build all of his ships. The oldest ship in the Portsmouth dockyard is the Mary Rose. It was found at the bottom of the sea in 1982 and was later moved to the dockyard museum. The Mary Rose is over four hundred and fifty years old and once belonged to King Henry the Eighth. In the sea next to the Portsmouth dockyard museum is another famous ship. HMS Victory was Admiral Nelson’s ship. He was a very important person in the British Royal Navy. He had many fights with the French during the wars between England and France in the Nineteenth Century. Many people visit HMS Victory to find out what it was like to live on two hundred years ago. Today, Portsmouth is still home to Britain’s warships and is as important now as it was in the time of King Henry the Eighth and Admiral Nelson.

VUVUZELA MAN

The 2010 Football World Cup, which took place in South Africa, will always be famous for the strange sound made by the crowd. Instead of shouting and cheering, the thousands of fans played a simple musical instrument made of plastic called a ‘vuvuzela’. Many people hated the noise of these horns, but others enjoyed it. Freddie Maake, who is South African, says that he is the man who gave the world this

noisy object: “The vuvuzela is my baby. When I was ten years old, I made one and took it to football matches in my home town. I blew it to give my team good luck. Later, I began to follow South Africa’s most famous football team, the Kaizer Chiefs. I always took my vuvuzela. At first, I called it a ‘lemporo’, which is the name of the place where I grew up.” Years later, Freddie and a friend decided to make these plastic horns in large numbers and sell them at football matches. In 1992, Freddie changed the name to vuvuzela, which means ‘welcome’ and ‘celebration’ in the Zulu language. People think that Freddie has made a lot of money from creating and selling his musical instrument, but this is not true. Big companies have stolen his idea and Freddie has got nothing. But Freddie is not sad or angry about this. He wants everybody in the world to play the vuvuzela and to be happy when they are supporting their football team.
