This response examines a great variety of symbols, including the conch, the fire, the meat, the beast
and Piggy’s glasses, demonstrating a good understanding of their implications and the ways they
reinforce themes and contribute to plot development in Lord of the Flies. The section on how certain
symbols are associated with key characters is also very detailed, but could have been further
enhanced by indicating clearly what symbols Simon is connected with, and how they serve to reveal
his character.

This insightful essay explores how mental and physical suffering are presented in Othello and The
Painted Veil from a wide range of perspectives. It shows the candidate’s thorough grasp of the topic
by analysing not only the characters’ thoughts and actions, their speeches and facial expressions, but
also how cinematography and imagery are used to create impact. It also clearly distinguishes how
these forms of suffering lead to different endings in the two texts.

An original short story with a sense of humour and suspense maintained throughout. The choice of
diction and description of the setting are appropriate to the theme and plot. Some thoughts are put
into developing the main character and the storyline. The story is well-structured with a twist of plot
towards the end. The ending echoes with the theme and the opening of the story. Engages the reader.
