7/29/2019 Letter to NY Methodist Hospital
1/2
September 19, 2013
Ms. Lyn Hill
Vice President for Communication and External AffairsNew York Methodist Hospital
506 6th
Street
Brooklyn, NY 11215
Dear Vice President Hill:
I am writing with regards to New York Methodist Hospitalsplans for the Center forCommunity Health, a new outpatient services facility, proposed for the block bounded by
5th
Street, 6th
Street, 7th
Avenue, and 8th
Avenue in Park Slope. I appreciate your early
outreach to my office, local community organizations, and nearby neighbors, and I lookforward to your continued communication as your proposal develops.
Since the news of the Methodists expansion proposal was announced in July, my office
has heard from nearby residents who have raised concerns and offered suggestions onhow to improve the plans. I wanted to pass along the comments from neighbors in
advance of your presentation to the Brooklyn Community Board 6 Landmarks and Land
Use Committee meeting on Thursday, September 26, 2013 and at the Public Forumhosted by the Park Slope Civic Council on Monday, September 30, 2013.
Below you will find a summary of the comments that constituents have shared with myoffice: Reduce the bui lding bulk , and shi ft i t toward 7thAvenue:Design the new facility so
that the majority of the building will be closer to existing hospital properties on 7th
Avenue rather than 8th
Avenue, which is predominantly residential.
Make the mid-block through street two-way:Some neighbors have suggested that, given the prevalence of one-way streets in the surrounding area, the through street
ought to be two-way, in order to avoid vehicles circling nearby blocks.

Mitigate impacts fr om an increase in tr aff ic and demand for on-street parking:Designate additional space, beyond what was included in the mid-block through street
proposal, for patient pick-up and drop-off. Better incentivize hospital staff, patients,
and visitors to use public transit, potentially through advocacy and funding forimprovements to the 7
thAvenue F/G subway station and additional bus service.
Share architectural render ings of the bui lding f aade and lobby:Provide detailsabout the materials, colors, and textures under consideration and explain how thedesign team intends to incorporate existing features from the surrounding area.
I look forward to your responses to these comments at the upcoming public meetings.Should you have any questions or require more information, please contact Catherine
Zinnel in my District Office at (718) 499-1090 [email protected].
