LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT In February we got down to business at Star Bar! Our board and committee chairs have been busy keeping us on track and we have some exciting events coming up, the most eminent being the visit from the corporate board in March. I wanted to mention this (yet again) so that everyone gets their calendars changed to Thursday,

MARCH 9th for our event. There is NO event on Monday, March 6th. We adjusted this especially because we want to make sure the corporate board can see how much fun we have going on in Des Moines! Please stop by our event that evening, and stay tuned for additional info on an informal get together while they are here. Our very own Christine Healy is a member of the corporate board and we are so proud and want to show her our support too! We also learned at our Business meeting that we will stay with our current website, while still at considerate cost savings to our chapter (Thanks to great negotiating skills from Chris Harvey!) As a reminder, we are having our meeting on Thursday, March 9 instead of Monday, March 6 due to the Corporate Board being in town for meetings in the latter half of the week and they would like to attend our membership meeting. Following is the schedule: 5:15 – Socializing, cash bar; 5:45 – Dinner; 6:15 – Presentation: Jodi White from Dress for Success; 6:45 – Wrap-up. Menu will be as follows: cheese board, winter pear salad, chicken parmesan with steamed vegetables and wild rice, rolls and butter, apple pear crisp. Wine, water and pop will be provided by Syverson Strege & Co. Future meetings are as follows: April – Cub Club at the ballpark with tour; May – Artisan Gallery 218. Communications: I attended board and chapter meeting on January 9, 2017. Chapter website duties accomplished: updated meeting information and added announcements; prepared and sent emails for February meeting and reminder per President’s instructions; prepared newsletter for website. I updated the committee assignments list, placed in newsletter, and sent final to president. The February 2017 newsletter was sent to membership on Sunday, January 22, 2016. Stephanie Cardwell prepared the new site and has added me as administrator. We will meet and discuss the maintenance of the site. Deadline for the next Connect newsletter is Friday, February 13, 2017. If you have information you would like to include in the newsletter, please send it to Christine Healy ([email protected]). Please have your items finalized before you send them. As Corporate Secretary/Treasurer it is my responsibility to upload board meeting and chapter meeting minutes. All minutes and newsletters from October-December 2016 have been uploaded. We need to establish an email for all corporate communications – I suggest [email protected]. We must finalize this decision and send to corporate office. In regards to ending our relationship with StarChapter, we found out that our yearly subscription had been automatically renewed. Chris Harvey spoke with Allan Cohen at StarChapter about us not being happy. Mr. Cohan gave Chris some options to present to the Board for consideration as far as a cheaper alternative through at least the end of the year and then we can decide what to do going forward. Following is what she found out: 1) we can choose from 3 different levels and they are as follows – a) keep premier at rate of $100 per month; move down to standard at rate of $85 per month; move down to light at rate of $49 per month. 2) starting next year, we can have the option of going month-to-month at light rate of $49 per month or renew for the year at that same rate. Chris found out that the level of use we have/need is covered at the light rate and we wouldn’t be losing any service, so is adequate for our needs. Christine has found that the Wild Apricot is not a good fit for us. For one thing, it only allows one administrator. Discussion was held and it was decided that we would go with changing over to the light rate of $49. A motion was made by Katherine McClure to change to the light rate of $49 per month and re-evaluate in November 2017 so we can decide what we want to do going forward before renewal is up at the end of December 2017. It was seconded by Karen Andersen. Motion carried. Fundraising Committee: Central Iowa Floral has been contacted regarding our annual Spring Flower Sale. Delivery date is set for Wednesday, May 3 at 2:30 p.m. Much assistance will be needed to sort the flowers for pick-up that day. Order sheets will be available soon, with the order deadline of March 10. Last year our profit was $2,324.90.Our committee met on January 9 after the chapter meeting for discussions. One big issue for this committee is trying to organize and begin the annual nut sale in October when the committee membership changes. I suggest the outgoing committee begin the process in September by updating the order forms and distributing them, with the assistance of the incoming committee, if possible. The incoming committee will then finalize the sales and take in the payments. Having a deadline for orders in the third week of October will expedite the delivery date to earlier in November. Other Business: Old Business There was no old business.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Kim Crocker, Kemin Industries

Kemin Industries is more than a worldwide ingredient manufacturer; they are a laboratory, a researcher, a resource and a partner to their customers. From animal health to human nutrition, customers come to them for answers and solutions. Kim Crocker has been with Kemin for 10 years and is currently the Senior Executive Assistant to the President of Kemin’s AgriFoods North America division. She enjoys her job at Kemin as it is

very much a family oriented company. Kemin is a wholly owned family company started in 1961 by R. W. and Mary Nelson, who are still active on the board. She commented, “I work for a wonderful man and executive team and truly enjoy the diversity of the work I do. No day is the same.” Outside of the office, Kim has been married for 35 years to her “amazing” husband Steve. They have two children, Steve Jr. (32) and Katie (20). They also have two grandchildren, Malachi (9) and Mika (7). Spending time with her family is a priority and she also likes reading, gardening, camping and travel. And, Kim didn’t want to leave out every woman’s staples, shopping and chocolate. An interest that people don’t expect of her is an enjoyment of going to the shooting range. Kim joined EWI to meet other women in her profession and develop relationships associated with the “commonality we share on a work level.” The Des Moines EWI Chapter extends a warm welcome to Kemin Industries and member representative Kim Crocker.
