Discuss what you learned about bees and beekeepers. Help your child distinguish the facts from other sentences in the play. Ask your child for more details about bees. You may wish to find a book or online article about bees.
Read the play. Answer the questions.
Bees for the Farm
Characters: Farmer Dan; Joan, his granddaughter
Farmer Dan: I don’t have any bees.
Joan: That is good. Bees are bad. They sting people.
Farmer Dan: Bees are not bad. We need them to grow food. If they aren’t here to carry pollen from flower to flower, my trees will not grow fruit.
Joan: Oh, that is too bad. What will you do?
Farmer Dan: I know a beekeeper who sells honey. He puts bees on people’s farms. The bees make honey from the flowers. They also carry pollen from flower to flower. I asked my friend to put some hives near my fruit trees.
Joan: That is good. Now you will have bees.
Farmer Dan: Here he comes now. Welcome, bees!
1. What is one fact that is stated in the play?
2. Why is Farmer Dan upset that he does not have any bees?

Read the story. Follow the directions.
The Hats of Presidentsby Tommy Capp
My second grade class is learning about Presidents of the United States. We are reading about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt. Today, our teacher showed us pictures of the kinds of hats these men wore. It was fun to learn about these hats. George Washington wore a three-corner hat. This was a hat with three points. Abraham Lincoln wore a stovepipe hat. It was black and very tall. Sometimes Teddy Roosevelt wore a cowboy hat.
1. What is the author’s name?
2. Write the word that tells what the story is all about.
cowboys hats votes
3. Underline the sentence in the story that tells how the writer felt about the lesson.
4. Why do you think the author wrote this story?
Home Activity Your child answered questions about a story and told why the author wrote it. Together read a funny story. Ask your child to tell who wrote the story, what the story is all about, and why the author might have written it.
