    Valley CLEAN!!

Unfortunately FTTH has had delays due to unforseen circumstances and is now 3 months behind. The POP is almost ready and LinkAfrica are just waiting for a piece of cable which should arrive middle of August 2016. More ISP’s will still be brought onboard.

On behalf of LinkAfrica we again appoligise for all the inconvience due to the digging and trenching. We know that some residents aren’t very happy but it will soon all be over and we will have fibre to the home.

Some residents have voiced their disapproval of FTTH being built in Vorna Valley, but most people are excited knowing they will have fibre soon. To those who are unhappy, you are welcome to send your valid complaints to us. LinkAfrica always goes out of their way to accomodate everyone.

LinkAfrica address issues residents bring to us, and we ask that residents don’t discuss or argue with the workers, they are after all only doing what they have been hired for. rather speak to the site managers or email us on [email protected]

    Fire in our Vlei

When someone deliberately sets fire to our Vlei and they don’t have the slightest thoughts for the wild life and birds they are killing, one wonders what kind of mentallity this person has.

And if this is not enough, we only had a “dinky little fire truck” to assist in putting out the fire. Unfortunately the truck could not reach most of the fire and they ran out of water.

The VVRA have also been chasing council to have walls broken down and removed where an inconsiderate resident illegal walled in a servitude into the Vlei.

So even if the Fire Department’s big fire truck wasn’t broken down and in for repairs, the big fire truck would not have been able to enter the Vlei to kill the fire.

    Vorna Valley Yearly Vlei Clean-up

Please diarise 24 September 2016 for our yearly Vlei Clean-up. We will be having a “Vlei Clean-up Photograph” competion, so come take your selfies while helping to clean-up the Vlei.

    Thank you to:

    • TRSS for offering to be our security on this day• Wendy Redl of Harcourts Midrand for sposoring water bottles.• The Vorna Valley SPAR for sponsoring the “after clean-up” cooldrinks.

Any other sponsorships will be welcome.

  • The pink invader that is taking over our grasslands

Common name: Pom pom weed Scientific name: Campuloclinium macrocephalum (Asteraceae) Alternative common names: Pompom bossie (Afrikaans)

Pompom weed is an Argentinian plant in the daisy family, with its striking pink powder-puff-like flowers. It is a serious threat to the conservation of South African grasslands. The first record of its presence was from Johannesburg in 1962 when it began invading disturbed areas along roadsides and unused fields. The weed is now prominent throughout Gauteng Province.

Under the NEMBA Alien and Invasive Species Regulations, pompom weed is listed as a Category 1b invader in Gauteng, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga and Category 1a in the rest of South Africa, meaning that every effort must be made to remove and destroy it.

The distribution of pompom has almost doubled in the past five years. It threatens grasslands, open savanna and wetlands by decreasing the carrying capacity of the land. The plant is unpalatable to wildlife and agricultural livestock.

It also threatens indigenous herbs and grasses. It is almost impossible to control mechanically due to its robust root system and copious seed production. Herbicide application is expensive and labour intensive and therefore restricted to roadsides and smaller, manageable areas, so biocontrol is deemed to best long-term solution to control pompom weed.

Biocontrol agentOn 23 October 2013, the thrips (Liothrips tractabilis) was released in Pretoria at Rietvlei Nature Reserve.

Additional releases were made a month later at Swartkop Airforce Base and Rietondale (ARC-PPRI research farm) and Roodeplaat Nature Reserve. At the beginning of December 2013, releases were made at a further six sites around Pretoria.

Recruited from Argentina, where pompom weed is indigenous, the pompom thrips causes significant damage to the stems and leaf tissue at the growing tips. This causes deformities in plant growth, reducing the height, biomass and flower production of this unwanted weed.

A second promising biocontrol agent for pompom weed is the flower-feeding moth (Cochylis campuloclinium) which is still undergoing testing by scientists in quarantine facilities around the country.

How to control pompom weed on your propertyHerbicides registered for use on pompom weed are Plenum, Access and Climax. The two physical methods include uprooting and burning of the plant. Herbicides must always be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines as well as national and provincial regulations.

Anyone wanting to include biological control in their management strategy against pompom weed can have their names, contact details and locality added to an existing database by contacting: Almie van den Berg ([email protected]) or Liamé van der Westhuizen ([email protected]).
