Message from the President of EBPAFor over twenty years, the “Let Us Break Bread Together” concerts have brought together a wide variety of musical ensembles to the Paramount stage. The backbone of these concerts has always been the amazing array of vocal talent which is such an integral part of our Bay Area community. Singing is defi ned by some as the “First Art,” and is often the form of music fi rst experienced by children, both at home and at school. It’s also the universal language shared by cultures worldwide, which is most within our reach and capable of expressing our deepest human emotions.

OEBS’ tradition of celebrating with song during the holiday season continues this year. Sharing the stage with Oakland East Bay Symphony will be over 200 singers, ranging in age from 12 to 85, showing that singing is ageless and a lifelong source of nourishment for the soul. As a member of the Oakland Symphony Chorus, it is a great pleasure and privilege to take part in sharing the gifts of light, hope and peace through song with all of you.– Monique Stevenson, President, East Bay Performing Arts

Message from the MaestroEvery year we are happy to bring you this most Oakland of concerts. Many additional collaborations have been generated following our Let Us Break Bread Together concerts. Most notably, there has been the work of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and our resident Kelzmer band, Kugelplex. It’s this spirit of cooperation that embodies the best of Oakland and the East Bay and your participation is, of course, equally important.

We are going just a little off the holiday path this year with our fi nal piece. By request, we are performing our version of America the Beautiful which opened every “Break Bread” concert when it was at other times of the year. The patriotic sentiment fi ts any season and with that, we wish you Happy Holidays!– Michael Morgan, Music Director

Oakland East Bay SymphonyMichael Morgan, Music DirectorFounded in 1988, Oakland East Bay Symphony is a critically acclaimed and community-focused leading regional orchestra dedicated to serving the diverse population of the East Bay. OEBS has gained regional and national recognition for its unique convergence of artistic excellence, community service and education programs.

Under the artistic leadership of Maestro Michael Morgan, OEBS reaches over 60,000 people annually, with more than one-third of its operating budget dedicated to education and outreach programs. On the concert stage, OEBS has become an important positive force in bringing together the talents and resources of diverse artists, performing arts organizations and audiences from throughout the Bay Area. (Visit oebs.org for more information.)

Michael Morgan was born in Washington, DC, where he attended public schools and began conducting at the age of 12. While a student at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, he spent a summer at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, studying with Gunther Schuller and Seiji Ozawa. He fi rst worked with Leonard Bernstein during that same summer. In 1986, Sir Georg Solti chose him to become the Assistant Conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, a position he held for seven years under both Solti and Daniel Barenboim. In 1986, he was invited by Leonard Bernstein to make his debut with the New York Philharmonic. As a guest conductor, he has appeared with most of America’s major orchestras.

In addition to his duties with OEBS, Maestro Morgan serves as Artistic Director of Oakland Youth Orchestra, Music Director of Sacramento Philharmonic, Artistic Director of Festival Opera in Walnut Creek, and teaches the graduate conducting course at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He makes many appearances in the nation’s schools each year, particularly in the East Bay, and is highly regarded as a champion of arts education and minority access to the arts.

For 54 years, the 120-member Oakland Symphony Chorus (OSC) has been recognized as one of East Bay’s fi nest choirs and a premier resource for continuing education in choral arts. OSC has received consistently impressive concert reviews and has developed a wide range of educational programs for the community.

Dr. Lynne Morrow became Music Director of the Oakland Symphony Chorus in 2005. During her tenure, the scope of the chorus has expanded to include contemporary, international and neglected works along with traditional classical repertoire. She conducts OSC’s workshop performances of major works and a spring “Messiah,” hosts summer choral outreach “Sing-ins” and prepares the chorus for work with Oakland East Bay Symphony as well as other local community and youth orchestras, such as Oakland Youth Orchestra and Young People’s Symphony Orchestra, with which we collaborate.

Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir is embarking on their 27th season under the direction of co-founder Terrance Kelly. Founded in 1986, the mission of OIGC is to inspire joy and unity among all people through black gospel and spiritual music traditions. The choir’s exquisite vocal harmonies and stirring gospel repertoire have led to performances with music industry greats such as Take 6, Walter Hawkins, Linda Ronstadt, Joan Baez, Peter Gabriel, tours to Canada, Australia and Israel, and performances at the New Orleans, Monterey, Russian River, North Beach, San Jose, Healdsburg and San Francisco Jazz Festivals. Find their performance calendar posted on www.oigc.org.

Mr. Kelly has garnered extensive musical credentials in both gospel and jazz music. His operatic range and joyous emotional feel for the music make him a popular soloist as well as an accomplished director, composer and arranger.

As founding Artistic Director he has directed the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir (adult and youth). He is Minister of Magnifi cation at Imani Community Church. Mr. Kelly has been a favorite teacher at the Living Jazz annual Jazz Camp since 1982. He also travels to Canada and throughout Northern California to teach gospel music workshops and is a member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus. (Cont’d pg. 8)
